    I have finally driven the new 2024 VW Tiguan. I drove over 600 miles in my week with the new VW Tiguan and really got a good feel for the car. The infotainment system is a huge step forward for VW but I was most surprised by the 1.5L petrol engine.

      Cars are getting bigger and bigger - and I wonder where and how the hell people park in multi-storey car parks. Well, the answer seems to be that they take 1.5 spaces (i.e TWO spaces) - and there is no penalty for doing so ! Many new cars seem fine for North AMerican roads and parking - but too big for European ones, IMO.

      All VW are, with the exception of the handful of R models. I get it though, they need to stay competitive with their rivals in fuel economy. Every says, "give me more power." Then they complain about the less than stellar fuel economy. You can't have both.

A few years ago I had an M3 and someone said “I have one as well,” no he didn’t he had a mid range car with the M-Sport pack! No M engine, gearbox, suspension and brakes, just a normal car with a nice interior. But he really thought they were the similar cars!

    Enjoyable Review this (am new to the channel) - and the Schnauzers were a bonus (owning one myself !). This new version is now the size it needs to be - the previous one wasn't that roomy in the back at all - though I am 6'4". I am considering one of these later this year.....but I think I'm right to say that the overly large Screen doesn't HAVE to be 15" - you can choose a 12" one - and that's what I'd do. Sun Roof a must by the looks of it.

I can only see it getting worse as we move into the world of common platforms and EV technology. The only thing left to differentiate between them will be their styling packs! I had the Seat version of the last model, it was excellent, l shouldn’t have sold it. The new one looks nice but tippy tappie controls don’t do it for me. I had a 2020 Audi TT and that’s as much technology as I want, all I need a screen to do show me pictures, reverse camera, sat nav, etc. Controls need buttons and switches. Driving down roads with your left arm stretched out swaying around with a finger flying solo trying to tap a button whilst looking where you are going at 60 mph is dangerous. Nice video though, I was looking forward to seeing your test. Good job.

  • @Russell_G
    @Russell_G Před 12 dny +2

    Not for me, I really think VAG has lost the plot with the whole haptic thing, its borderline dangerous and I can't see me ever getting a car that relies on that tech. Also agree with the badge engineering aspect of using the R logo for marketing only...its just a con, stop doing it! Thanks for your review though, its good to see you doing all sorts and not just the stuff you love.

    • @krane15
      @krane15 Před 5 dny

      They're not alone. The entire automobile industry has that fever. Audi has it bad. Toyota and Hyundai are notable holdouts to tradition, and their buyer are happier for it.
      Some people don't mind haptic (Tesla owners). These are trend setting people which is why they purchased an electric car to begin with. But VW buyers are not like Tesla people. They far more traditional and conservative. They're the opposite. They don't mind tech, as long as its packaged logically. VW learned that the hard way. But they should have known better from the beginning.

    I’m planning on replacing my 2019 Golf for something bigger and with a higher ride height. I tried to like the newer VW options but I prefer buttons and dials to touch sensitive screens, and they only offer plug-in hybrids which doesn’t really suit my needs.
    I suppose at least you can now change the drive mode more easily, on my Golf there’s a button, but that just brings up the options on the infotainment screen, then you’ve got to try and select the one you want without taking your eyes off the road. It’s why my Golf spends 95% of its time in eco mode. 😂

Mixed feelings about the size of the touchscreen but functionality certainly seems to have improved. Is there no diesel option or 4motion available? Why don’t you test the new Passat with the same engine or a plug-in version to see how it compares to the Tiguan - SUV vs estate. Keep up the good work.

    I really hope you get to drive a PHEV, because it seems to me that VW are doing something very interested in the PHEV space. They have announced a *load* of PHEV models in the last few months, all of which have an impressive 50kW DC charging and 100km of claimed range. For instance the battery to take a Skoda Kodiaq 100km is going to be a fair bit bigger than the battery to do the same in a Cupra Leon, but they always claim the same EV range figure.
    Off the top of my head, the VW group PHEVs announced so far, all with this spec, are models of: Tiguan, Golf, Passat, Superb, Leon, Formentor, Kodiaq. And probably some others which I've missed.
    So VW do seem to be committing quite hard to PHEVs which I think is really interesting.

    • @davidy7004
      @davidy7004 Před 13 dny

      Although I do wish they wouldn't quote single overall MPG and range figures for PHEVs, because they're pointless.
      Claiming a PHEV can do 200MPG or whatever is only useful if you happen to drive on that exact WLTP test cycle - which no ordinary driver is going to do.
      Much more useful would be for WLTP or whoever to specify 2 figures - one for MPG on a flat battery, and one for pure EV range (to be fair I think they do quote the second figure).
      If you know a car has, for example, 40 miles of realistic EV range and then will do 45 MPG on a flat battery, you can make a much better estimate of how much you will use on your own day to day journeys.
      For instance if you have a regular journey of 80 miles, that's going to look like 90 MPG overall.
      But if you drive 100 miles, it's 75MPG overall. And you could work it out for your own journey lengths- admittedly I have Excel fired up to help me out at this point!
      I know cars may vary from that slightly using different modes or using Battery Hold or whatever, but it isn't going to be far out ... but we need WLTP or someone to produce those 2 figures.

    The "R" on the R-Line is has highlighted edges. The "R" performance, has a solid R. Makes sense now? Yeah, its a ridiculous system. For dislikes, that would be the sport seats. The ergo active seats are great, but I hate these seats with integrated headrest with zero ability to adjust. They make no sense in a family car.
    Speaking of adjustments, I wish the tight extender worked on the rear seat too. Considering I have a family of six-footers. I know cars at this tier don't offer any adjustments on the rear seat. Maybe in the future. For now, at least the driver and front seat passenger will arrive after a road trip in comforts.
    On the positive side, does it still offer that neat USB-C port at the rear view mirror for easy install of a dash cam? It makes the dash cam install a simple plug & play. The only thing better would be one at the rear.
    One more thing, never tell us what you're NOT going to tell us. Just tell us what you want us to know. What we don't know, we won't miss.

    Why vw didn't use a 2.0L tsi instead of the 1.5tsi is anyones guess, I drove a new passat and the only thing that ruined the car was that 1.5 tsi it sounded so strained and felt underpowered. The tiguan weighs more so I can imagine it be worse. It will be the same problem with the plug in hybrid, once the battery is depleted you are left with that 1.5tsi it will be even worse as you will have the extra weight of the hybrid battery to carry around. I have ended up order the New skoda Superb estate as that is offered with a 2.0L diesel which is far better suited and will last longer then a strained 1.5.

It might have freed up space in the centre for a jog-wheel but that doesn't exactly do very much. By the way, the basic version or Hybrid Life has a starting price of £42,525 and that means another £2,000 or so in 'luxury tax' for the next five years with it being over £40k. Mazda doesn't do that... but maybe on which Mazda do you see the MazdaSpeed sign?
      And what if you still want a sportier car, which should also be able to handle off-road, etc., so SUW... as was the case with me.
      Are you going to buy a Tiguan with "R" or a regular CX-5 (2022 model-new...2.5L-194 horses, AWD and top trim)...which is sportier?
      Even for the 2020-2021 models, testers in Europe claimed that the chassis is so sporty and stiff that the car is not suitable for long journeys... this is Mazda's orientation towards the sportiness of the MX-5... Miata is Mazda's ideal with which they try to get closer with all models...some more, others less, but the basic orientation is the Miata.
      Also, every new engineer who gets a job at Mazda must first drive a Miata to get to know that feeling, which is the goal when designing all other models....

VW has always had bland and plastic feeling interiosr, all they’ve done here is add a large screen and crossed their fingers.
