- Once my brother Steve named me Tipper, that became my real name. Often times when people call me MaryJane, it takes me a minute to realize they are talking to me. I find it fascinating how we dole out nicknames and, how many of them stick for life. I hope you enjoy this video about where my name came from and comment below telling me any nicknames you go by. Thanks for watching and for helping me Celebrate Appalachia!

We're still praying for Granny and everyone who loves her.❤
Miss Tipper, can you please tell Granny we are praying for her, and if she ever wants to take another helicopter ride she doesn’t have to be sick. We can Pitchin and get her a helicopter ride. I hope that makes her smile.😅
🚁
My Mama who is 84 now always says, “God knows how to water a garden.” I love that saying and it’s so true. They say all the nutrients that have gathered in the clouds get heavy and rain down when it rains and fertilize all of Gods creation. He is truly a Master Artist and Gardener.
Love to you Tipper I know how heavy your heart is for your precious mama I’m praying for you and her and Paul and Steve. When you visit her next give her my love and a big hug 🙏🙏♥️♥️
I love Corie and Katie’s nicknames of Chatter and Chitter ! So unique and cute !!!
I know this is likely pre-recorded and you're with your mom. We love you folks. ((hug)) 🙏
My Daddy was the same as your Dad. He would never call someone by their given name. Child or adult. He would visit with them and then say, I'm gonna call you-------then he'd pick a name. I thought it was fun to watch and see what name he'd come up with. They would always fit somehow. When my youngest son was 2 or 3 my Dad passed away. Dad called Paul my son, Little Buddy. Daddy had a stroke and also had dementia. We were nursing him at home. He went back and forth remembering people, but up until the day he passed he always, always remembered his Little Buddy. When Paul wandered into his room, Pap (my Dad) would smile and say "there's my little Buddy". I loved that. And yes all 7 of us siblings had several nicknames he had given us, and I cherish the memories of them. God bless you and yours. Praying for all of you.
My little brother called me sister, because he couldn't say Lisa. My dad and uncle called me sister as well. Praying for Granny and all of you too. 🙏
Praying for granny. please let her know we all love her and are praying for her and you and your brothers.
God blrss🌹❤️🙏
We are still praying for granny hope she is getting better ❤
Mary Jane is a fine name, but to me you will always be Tipper! We would say “even a blind squirrel can find an acorn.” As always, Prayers for Granny and your family.🌸🙏
Hope you all are holding up under this new health crisis. Remember to make time to rest and sleep. I didn't do this when Mom had her health crisis 2 years ago. I have never regained what I lost.
Tipper is a wonderful name for such a wonderful person .Matt is a lucky man .I hope granny is doing better I miss her alot and I'm praying for her so she can get better .thanks tipper .
Loved this video. Prayers for Granny.
My name is Mary, in 7th grade there were 9 Mary’s in my home room, so I became Mary Lou to differentiate. I never had a nickname until Girl Scout camp, they started calling me Teach, because I wear glasses and the pair I wore then slipped down to the tip of my nose like the caricature of a little old school marm. Granny & you all are in my prayers
My papa calls me scooter because when i was little i never crawled i just scooted across the floor lol
My son did that also🙂
I pray that the doctors are on the right track for helping Granny. You forgot "Chitter and Chatter" for nicknames for Corey and Katie.
I like the name Tipper .I think it’s very fitting for you.I love your beautiful hair.❤You have a precious family .My husband n I have been married 65 years. We feel so blessed.
Prayer group and I are still praying for Granny! God bless!❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love the Tipper story, and the Blind Pig story. I've got Granny on my mind and in my heart as always. Hugs Tipper.
When I was born, my uncle gave me a nickname. Guess what it was? Mary-Jane!! He and an aunt called me that well into my adulthood. When he had a daughter, he nicknamed her Little Miss Muffet, which was shortened to Muffy and which we all called her.
Continued prayers for Ms Granny, family and all the caregivers.
Still praying for granny 🙏 and may God's peace be with ya'll
My husband was named Lonnie, after his Dad. Their family called them Big Lon and Little Lon. But Little Lon got bigger than Big Lon! Lol 😊❤
We did that in our family too! Big and little Margie, Nan, Vickie, and Ed! Southern Ohio
❤❤❤
That pan of the woods in spring was so serene, I want to just sit on your porch all day and drink it in. Thank you for including it!
For many, many years I was called Cricket. My hair was so dark the sun would shine on my hair and it looked almost reddish blue. Still praying for Granny and the family.
Love that nickname! So sweet..❤
We have a lot in common. My aunt was Mary Jane, my granddad was Ira and he also gave all the grandchildren nicknames. Tell granny we love her. Also Katie and family
My Daddy use to use the "a blind hog sometimes finds a acorn" all the time.
I am still Praying for Granny ,you and your family .
My grandpa called people by their first name and added the word Face after your name. Janet Face my name and my sister Diane Face. We were born in the 1950’s before Facebook was even thought about!
My dad is 91 and has just initials for his first and middle name -J L that is all he has on his birth certificate along with his last name.
Thanks Tipper Face !
I've always loved how the wet tree trunks look black and really pop with the bright 💚 spring green leaves❣️
Tipper I would love to have a tee with the blind pig and the acorn in some fashion of celebrating Appalachia. I would be so proud to wear it. I love you and your family and look forward to all your content. I'm praying for Granny and the Drs who are looking after her. God bless you and your family.
My nickname nickname as a child was pumpkin!!! I loved it very much!!! God Bless Us All!!!
My favorite TV show as a child was Family Affair. My mom always fixed my hair in pigtails and I had freckles like the little girl on the show. My aunt named me Buffy & I carried my Mrs Beasley doll like she did. I still have that doll.
Still keeping up the prayers for your mom and family, friends and community.❤
I pray Granny is doing better. Thank you for the video. I always enjoy Celebrating Appalachia with you. May God bless you all.
Tipper, sweet lady your family is in my heart and prayers. Nickname of Corker or corky, my mommy gave me that name. She called me that until she passed. God bless .
In Texas even the dogs get nicknames!
😂😂😂😂
I came across your content when I suddenly became obsessed with Appalachia.
Im from the east coast and had always heard it pronounced with short "a" like appa-lay-chia.
The main thing I became obsessed with about Appalachia was the language/accents.
I looooove accents and different dialects, I especially love Southern accents; even more especially, how different they are from each other. Imagine how pleased I was to come across your content, which combines both lol.
I was also interested in how the many negative stereotypes started.
I started with Google and moonshine (a common attribute to Appalachia).
I 1st came across your blog referring to "more than moonshine" which introduced me to your CZcams channel.
I'm sooo glad I found it! I'm going on a 3rd-year fan of you and your family.
You've single-handledly changed my [stereotypical] ideas of Appalachia!
Tipper, I hear your heart when you speak about keeping Appalachian language, culture, and customs alive.
I know sometimes people say "if I reach just one person, it was all worth it"
Consider one person reached!!!
I appreciate the dedication and sacrifice involved in producing content to share with the world.
There's a space in my heart for your family, even Olive and Binx!!
I find myself looking forward to your videos, some I've rewatched several times. I also share your joys and woes!
I truly felt sadness over the loss of miss Cindy. I share hope and concern for Granny... excitement for the new babies and FINALLY getting the house!! I'm still so happy for Matt's opportunity to retire and most of all I now share the love of Appalachian culture with you, Tipper.
I come from a really rough background and from a young girl I was always fascinated by close family relationships because I didn't have that, but wanted it.
In a strange way, I feel like a distant part of your family... the family I always wanted, and I'm so grateful for that!!!
👋🙏♥️🙏👋My sentiments exactly as this lady says. I’m even using some of the words y’all use. I’m was from the Midwest and have been told by others I have the “twang.” 😅. I never heard it myself. Mostly I’d say the heavy twang is from the Southern part of Missouri. I’m originally from the central mid state area. When we moved to Mississippi our preacher, after knowing me a short time, and after hearing about my upbringing, called me Miss Sophisticate. He has since gone on to his maker. I miss him and his endearing nickname. I love your birth name, Mary Jane, but your nickname is so you. Love and prayers going out for Y’all and hopefully Granny will be able to go to her home in Wilson Holler. I’m sure she misses be close to her family and y’all truly miss her being there. Prayers and love to all. Jennifer 👋🙏♥️🙏👋
I wondered about that meaning for TBPATA - we grew up with a similar saying, "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then".
Hope and pray Granny is getting better🙏🏼❤️
Tipper...you are all so blessed to live in such a beautiful area.
A good rain is a blessing for any garden…...
One of my Dad's cousins was known as Bill. To this day, I run into people that don't know His name was nothing like Bill or William. They remember Bill's Diner which He owned. When He was a young child, a cherished and wonderful neighbor said He looked like someone she dearly loved who was named Bill and He reminded her of Her long gone loved one. The name just stuck and everyone called Him Bill after that.
Prayers for Granny and your family🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
I have always found it interesting how or why people pick a name for something or someone. Praying for Granny.
I always enjoy all your videos no matter what the subject matter you can make it interesting and fun. Continuing to pray for granny
i'd say you found some acorns! :) thanks for sharing, still thinking of and praying for Granny, you all, and all the caregivers/hospital staff.
Tipper, remember that jewel weed is a great cure for poison ivy. Used in soaps and salves for preventing the start of and spreading of poison ivy. Might be a good idea for Corey's soap skills. I personally keep an area growing for those uses . Love your channels and the girls' channel too. I live fairly close in Clarkesville, Georgia.
I didn’t know that. How do you process and use it to prevent and cure poison oak? We have a lot of both plants on our property so I would love to know how to utilize the jewel weed. Thank you.
From the time I was just a couple weeks old I was nicknamed Pooch an uncle called me that we'll it stuck I'm 72 now and my family still call me Pooch and a lot of my friends now my nieces and nephews call me Aunt Pooch and I love it. My niece who's almost 50 was born with a dislocated hip we started calling her Boo Boo and to this day she is Boo. Love the memories Tipper. Praying for Granny and the family.
God bless granny.and you and your family ❤❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Dear Tipper,
I’m so proud and happy to be one of your “acorns”. You’ve been a daily blessing in my life since last July! Granny and Pap did a wonderful job of raising you and your brothers! Love your whole family! Thank you for all your great videos and for just being the sweet person you are!🥰 God bless you!
Love, Jackie🪷
Love your name and your precious family! Continuing to pray for sweet Granny! May the Lord bless y’all mightily! 😀❤️
I hope today is at least a little better for granny and all of you. Sending love
We've had an abundance of rain here in Northeastern Ohio and are experiencing the burst of green you describe. It's the yearly reminder that Spring is the coming alive of another season of hope, particularly after months of cold and dark. I pray that you find hope and comfort in the presence of your brothers gathered to be with Granny. Even in the difficult times, the love of dear family and friends can fill our hearts and sustain us.
Prayers continue for granny, you, your brothers and entire family❤
Loved the story of you calling your Mom's hairdo like a Dog...that's so funny and I'm sure she got a big kick out of it...Praying for Granny and y'all...God Bless🙏🙏🙏
Awe, just awe. Thank you for explaining your name and your Blog name. I'm Livvy to those who are friends and Olivia to those who just encounter me in their lives. My children call me mom, but everyone else close calls me Livvy. My brother got the idea from Libby brand foods, and I directed the nickname from there. My mom always called me Libby, but she was the only one. Everyone else calls me Livvy.
Praising the Lord for Granny's improving health. Such good news! 🙏
I used to love going through my flower beds and see all the surprises coming up. I used to say it's like Christmas.
Tomatoes are polyembryonic. They can sometimes produce more than one plant from one seed.
Thank you Tipper for sharing. I always love listening to you and your family. Such a good place to be. ❤
Tipper you have a very soothing wonderful voice. You never fail to help me de-stress. At the risk of sounding redundant, I find that listening to you helps me to enter a calm space. I really enjoy your videos.
Praying for Granny and all of your family. Love, prayers and hugs for all of you. I consider all of you family. I’d love to have some porch sitting time with all y’all.
MaryJane is a very pretty name. Thanks for sharing how you are Tipper, a name I also like for girls, & how you chose your blog's name of Blind Pig & the Acorn. Katie & Corie were also called Chitter & Chatter, weren't they? Nicknames are fun, especially back in the older days, like even in the '30s where it was very common to have one. I had one of those walker deals like yours. How sweet to call Matt on cell to bring your sun thing for the camera 😃 Exciting to see how much rain y'all got. Please know a lot of us are praying hard for sweet Granny. 🙏🏻🌼🙏🏻
Thanks for the garden and flower update. I love the way you view things. So much love in your heart.
Special prayers continue for Granny and all of you! Hope things are going her way.
Mine is "Sissie" a nickname from my Father, I have been binge watching your videos and I am grateful to know all the books and people that you interview. Currently reading Frank C. Brown Collection thru a University online. Love knowing names also. Prayers for you and your family.
Tipper.. I was also a very shy little girl. I used to hide behind my daddys legs and peak my face out at people. My name is Kelly Ruth but my daddy called me Rufus. I love your stories.
Miss Tipper we're sending love and prayers to you all and especially Granny. Love from Memphis, TN!~
Love looking at the garden. Praying for Granny. She is such a strong woman. Glad she has her family around her. Bless your sweet family.
Tipper, you and your family are so often on my mind these last few days. So worried for Granny. Sending prayers for her and all of you!!!! I called my mother "Granny" too....because my children did.❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Prayers that your mother is gaining strength and will improve everyday.
My lovely mama when I was kid she called me sisie and than she quit calling me that let granny know am praying for her she a sweetheart ❤️ from heaven have a blessed Wednesday everyone 💖
Being that Katie and Corie are twins, it's fitting that it would autocorrect to Copie (Kopie). In Dutch or German it means copy. Lol
Always a joy tipper! Tell granny I’m blasting her with Gods powerful Love and Healing! ❤🎉👍
At my school we have two brothers with last name Dollar. We call the younger brother in the 7th grade " Fifty Cents". Thinking of you all and hoping your mom is improving.
My name is Theresa and my dad nicknamed me Reese Cup (sometimes shortened to Cup). I lost him at the end of January and thinking of him calling me that is bittersweet. Always enjoy your videos ❤
❤️
We know why you are named Tipper! We pray for your mother. Can you believe it...I am still stuck in bed and can't walk! Everything at your place looks really nice you all take good care of each other! Sending our love and prayers.
Hey tipper. My granny Wilson was called Beebo. I've never heard that name until you said that. Brought back good memories. I loved that lady. She was my second mama
Tipper God sure knows how to make a spring season , I just noticed the same thing you are talking about with a spring rain and the green just explodes almost while you are watching. Your garden is just fantastic with the growth. Have a great evening 😀 ❤🎉🎉
My Mama 84 always says, “God knows how to water a garden.” I love that saying.
Loved seeing your garden and greenhouse. Praying for you and the family. May precious granny be healed thinking of her you have blessed my life so much thank you.
Wonderful to spend some time with you celebrating Appalachia. Thank you for sharing Tipper.
I’m glad to hear granny is doing better 🙏🏻. My great great great grand mothers name was Molly when my mother was very little (the first born grand child ) she couldn’t say Molly she called her me money . From then on we all called her me money . Thank you for bringing that memory back. My mother will be 81 in June .
Thank you Tipper for all that info. Still praying for Granny. And the family. Love and prayers 🙏❤🙏❤
A "Blind Pig" I found out when we were taking a tour of the Lost Sea cave in Tennessee was the name given to places that sold moonshine during the days of Prohibition back in the 1920's. The tour guide said that the Lost Sea was such a place.
Hi Tipper! I love your name..My dearest nickname is Lindy lou, which my Mom always called me..Always makes me smile inside..My real names is Melinda..Continued prayers for sweet Granny and you all..❤❤
Praying for your sweet mama! We love Granny and pray for her comfort! 🥰
The Blind Pig and the Acorn always sounds like the name of an English pub to me. They usually have names like that. Goes well with your nickname Tipper too.
🙏🙏🙏 for granny, and the whole family!
One of my dads favorite sayings was " Ole' blind sow finally found an acorn"! Meaning you just got lucky or stumbled into good fortune.
Of course acorn was always pronounced akern in this instance just for effect.
I’ve used Even a Blind Pig… for probably 55 years, heard my Papaw say it. I’ve used it in conversation dozens of times. It’s right up there with Even Paranoids have Enemies.
I love your nickname, Tipper it is a very good nickname. It's awesome how you got the idea for The blind pig and the acorn. Prayers for granny and you and the family!🙏❤️🙏
I was in my basement last night twice, here in Davenport, Iowa..
Praying.
Two storms with tornadoes. Ugh.
Glad that you're doing well! Prayers for Granny Continued..
Happy Spring!❤
❤️
I'm from Davenport too!! I was working though so no need to hunker in the basement.
I went to school with a boy we called Weeble. Same reason as your nickname. Weebles woble, but they don't fall down. Prayers for y'all, I hope y'all are keeping well.
Prayers for all. God is in control ❤
Continuing to pray throughout the day for your family and Granny.
Praying for Granny
My great grandmothers on both sides of my family were named Mary Jane.
I have always had an issue using some nicknames, not all just some. I have a friend Gary, everyone calls him by his nickname. I won't tell you what it is because it is a little off color but it derives from the fact that he is a really good basketball player. I could never bring myself to call him by his nickname. Many years after we were out of school, he took me aside one day and said, "you know, you are the only one who calls me by my given name, even my mother calls me by my nickname". So I told him why and to this day I still call him Gary and sometimes it takes a second for him to make the connection that someone is talking to him. Tipper is a nice nickname!
Praying for Granny and your family. 🙏❤️
Thank y'all so much! Prayers for you , your family and all the viewers 🙏❤️
