"That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" is a song by the English rock band the Smiths. It appears on the album Meat Is Murder, and was the sole track from the album to be released as a UK promotional single.
    Lyrics
Park the car at the side of the road
    You should know
    Time's tide will smother you
    And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
    Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
    Well, I'm afraid
    It doesn't make me smile
    I wish I could laugh
But that joke isn't funny anymore
    It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
    It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...
Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
It was dark as I drove the point home
    And on cold leather seats
    Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
    Face after all
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
    Oh ...
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
    Oh ...
And now it's happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
    Oh...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
    (I've seen this happen)
    Happening in mine
    Oh...now, now
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
    Oh...
And now it's happening in mine
    (Happen)
    Happening in mine
    Oh...
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
    Oh...

Listen to ANDY ROURKE!!! Listen to that bass line, it's rythmic, it's melancholic, it's base for Johnny's ethereal sounds. He's not flashy, he's not flat, he plays bass as a bass player should, but adds so much depth and melody to a lot of Smiths songs. Really good bass player.

This song in particular resonates strongly in me, and there's a message for me within describing how no matter what people like to say, the joke only isn't funny when they've suffered the punchline. You simply will laugh at others struggles and sufferings until you yourself have experienced a similar tragedy, then all of a sudden it's all your own personal indignation. And don't we detest people having similar if not identical struggles to our own?

    • @nate2748

I concur brother. That statement about “suffering the punchline” is too true. It’s important to be careful with your words and how you joke. Everything isn’t fair game and you can really hurt the people around you. Even with close friends you only know a fraction of who they fully are. This song is a rare gem.

    Lyrics
Park the car at the side of the road
    You should know
    Time's tide will smother you
    And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
    Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
    Well, I'm afraid
    It doesn't make me smile
    I wish I could laugh
But that joke isn't funny anymore
    It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
    It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...
Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
It was dark as I drove the point home
    And on cold leather seats
    Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
    Face after all
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
And now it's happening in mine
    Oh ...
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
    Oh ...
And now it's happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
    Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
    Lives
    Oh...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
    (I've seen this happen)
    Happening in mine
    Oh...now, now
I've seen this happen in other people's

Word of warning… their music and lyrics won’t hit you till. Someone you shared The Smiths music with.. is gone.. I lost my wife in December we spent every date listening to them everywhere we went in 86 and beyond.. sometimes it’s hard to listen to them now.. but it be worst if I didn’t have the memories of our lives together without their soundtrack… reminiscing gets emotional somedays.. but the music makes more sense to me now more then it ever did .. they gave us a gift to share forever.. and I’ll always cherish those drives and concerts we shared.. miss you CK

One of their very best, from a creme catalogue of songs. Up there in the
top 10 for me of their songs. Many of Morrissey lyrics can be open
to interpretation. Not this one. A bitter song, imploring the
listener not to make a mockery of the suffering, loneliness and loss of others, because you
never know it may be you next time. Very true in the excess eighties when this cam out and the polarised society. In this one the protagonist mocked others but then it happens to them. They result to killing themselves by slashing their wrist in a car but at least dying with a smile on their face - as to show those that find them they were happy in death whether this was the truth. Another magnificent song with intense lyrical content, supported by Marr's guitar which is epic. This song is so good.
