  • Tag along to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia for a behind the scenes visit with interior designer Anthony Baratta. As the first ever Designer in Residence for the historic foundation, Tony has put his signature all-American spin on Palmer House (circa 1750), one of Colonial Williamsburg’s eighty-eight original 18th century buildings, which he now makes his home for part of the year. See how using The Williamsburg® Paint Color Collection by Benjamin Moore®, Tony has updated the historic home with his signature use of bold color and pattern for a fresh take on American design. And hear how he has incorporated his own collections of art and antiques with select picks from the WILLIAMSBURG Brand reproductions to tell the next stage of Palmer House’s story. It was a childhood trip to Colonial Williamsburg that sparked Tony’s lifelong love affair with American history and design so who better to inaugurate this this wonderful design initiative celebrating the best of past and present. “I want the next generation to appreciate the great bones of American architecture and design, and what better ‘classroom’ than Colonial Williamsburg, the birthplace of American style?” You’ll be inspired, informed and entertained!! Williamsburg will always be in my heart for it was our chosen destination for our honeymoon in 1992. Browsing and viewing all the amazing colonial homes and gardens was breathtaking. My love was the pristine and manicured gardens with all the hedges of boxwoods. A true English garden can be found throughout Williamsburg. A must see if you are in Virginia on vacation and love all things historian.

    I absolutely loved touring this home! I have visited Colonial Williamsburg when I was a child and fell in love with the style, design, colors and furniture way back then. I still use a color similar to the Lafayette blue used in this home and ironically it is named "Colonial Blue" which I love to pair with a vermillion red. I loved the way he used the antique patterns and the colors especially the gold, blue and white of his dining room, and also the nautical style decor. I noticed the Duncan Phyfe pieces in his home that are sharing spaces with incredible Shaker style furniture amongst the many romantic Victorian chairs and settees that he has successfully incorporated into all the rooms. His Vidal Gore brass bed is to die for! I am in love with a bold brass bed of any age or style! The Lincoln style railroad chairs in the entry room remind me of my grandmother's house as she collected and cherished them. The artwork is outstanding in his choices of Americana portraits in oil and the simplicity of the Folk art portraits hung together is so interesting to me and clever, I think. The grand moldings are stunning and to see them framing bold bright colors with carpets that pop with matching colors is like watching a colonial parade march thru the home. I loved this home and it touched me to be able to see it and am silently wondering if I didn't live a past life as a colonial designer? LOL! But seriously Susanna and Stacey, I could ramble on and on about this home and Anthony Baratta's designs, but more importantly the way you both outdid yourselves with the quality of the video, the interesting conversation and the content you provided us is gorgeous. Bravo with two enthusiastic thumbs up for this tour! Thanks again ladies you never disappoint!

    What a surprise that someone lives in one of Williamsburg's colonial homes. I thought they were all museums!---I'm so glad these wonderful structures were saved and can be enjoyed for many, many years to come.---I don't recall ever seeing in a Colonial-era home a staircase quite like the one in Mr. Baratta's home. The staircase seems to be a forerunner of the kind seen in homes of following eras and I'm thinking in particular of the Victorian era in which there's a long flight of stairs going up to a curve in the stairs that might have been a landing, all of which can be seen in the entrance hall with the rest of the stairs being out of sight.---I'm a card player so I especially liked the framed reproductions of playing cards.

    • @quintessenceblg
      @quintessenceblg  Před 4 lety +4

      Tony is the first ever Designer in Residence - no one has ever occupied one of the historic homes before. This was renovated back to the original 18th c. house so the staircase would have certainly proceeded a Victorian style one - I don't think it is all that unusual for a Georgian style home. Glad you enjoyed the card prints!

      @@quintessenceblg You are mistaken. It's not true that no one has ever occupied a historic home in CW before the Designer in Residence. One of my friends is living in one right now. There are a number of private residences among the houses along Duke of Gloucester Street, and these have been occupied by CW employees since early days of the restoration. www.localscoopmagazine.com/life/colonial-homes-modern-lives/

      @@quintessenceblg Could you check that information? That particular home was one of the last privately owned homes in Colonial Williamsburg. Someone has lived in that home until either they died or their heirs sold it to Colonial Williamsburg. (I think). And while Tony is the first Designer in Residence, many of the historic homes are lived in by employees at market value rentals and many are available for lodging for visitors. I have stayed in one of the houses. I hope you see this because I have a question that you probably can help me with...there is now another designer in residence... what is Colonial Williamsburg going to do with the home after the designer goes back home? Do you know what they are planning for these beautifully decorated homes?

    • @quintessenceblg
      @quintessenceblg  Před rokem +1

      @@LBGirl1988 Hi there - you are right about people occupying the historic homes. Here is the official answer to your questions: "All of the houses (but one) in Colonial Williamsburg’s historic area are owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Most are rented to employees, and a few to donors, and some are available to guests as part of the “Colonial Houses” program under the Williamsburg Inn mantle. Larger houses, such as the Palmer House where Tony lived, and the Nelson-Galt House, where Heather lives, are normally occupied by senior executives with the Foundation. The licensing department has been lucky to be able to use several of our original houses as showhouses for our Designer in Residence program. Tony was our first WBG Designer in Residence, so while he was not the first resident of the Palmer House, he was the first to decorate and live in one of the original or reconstructed houses in that role." And when Heather is no longer living at the Nelson-Galt house, it will probably be a CWF executive who rents it. AND - stay tuned for our video visit with Heather at the Nelson-Galt house coming this fall.

    Tony, I absolutely love what you have done with your home. The colors are spectacular and inviting. I love how you have mixed different periods of furniture. It all works so well together. I live in a replica of the George Wythe house built in 1950. The walls are all still white, but not for long. Thanks for the inspiration. Well done indeed!!

    OMGosh @Quintessence I’m just hooked on your channel now! All those victorian wing chairs in such delicious textiles. Adored this designer’s nod to amazing designs in antique quilts and how Anthony Baratta incorporated their love of those patterns into the various textiles throughout this most amazing home. That floor cloth in the main entrance hall - just incredibly stunning. I’ve shared your channel with various designer Facebook groups I’m in to inspire others as you and your selected guests in your videos have done for me. Love your work. Thank you once again, cannot get enough! 💜 ( 💋 Leah ) Cannot wait to catch up to all your amazing videos. Thank you 🙏🏽 for sharing.
