How to create a Chinese name for yourself?
Here's a quick introduction to the Chinese name, and some less-known but surprisingly useful information about it🧐
I lived in China for 9 years, I never bothered with a Chinese name until I bought a new TV and the shop asked for my name. I am English so I have an impossibly long surname. So I told the shop I was "Ying guo Ma Tai"...haha (My first name is Matt)
So then I realised perhaps I do need one, but what could it be?
Then I remembered when I first came to China, a small boy saw me and said "Hao Gao!" - I am 193 cm.
So I became Gao Ma Tai or just "Lao Gao" to most people!

So characters meaning lucky are 福、幸、祥、瑞、吉etc., but to use as a female name, 幸 (xìng) would be better. And characters to describe great women but with a relatively neutral and humble tongue could be 文(wén)/雅(yǎ)/娴(xián)，they mean well-educated and give a tender gentle image. So it's 幸文/幸雅/幸娴.
If I had to say it, the slight difference is that 文 means more literary, 雅 means more elegant, and 娴 is more classical.
All three combinations sound nice, you can pick one you like😊

There are a few Chinese surnames relevant to instruments, 琴, 钟, 管, 阮, etc., and violin translated to Chinese is 小提琴, so you can use 琴. (Actually 琴 as a character can refer to instruments that have strings in general, or specifically means the traditional Chinese instrument 古琴).
For “first name” you can use 洁(clean, clear) & 纯 (pure), these two characters make a beautiful combination for girls' name.
Together it's 琴洁纯 (qín jié chún). Hope you like it😊

In this case I would suggest 祝黛墨 ( zhù dài mò).
祝 as surname because one of its origins is officers in charge of celebration and sacrifice back to ancient times, so I guess it relates to Romero in some way. And today we use this character to mean congratulation/wish: e.g. 祝你生日快乐！(Happy birthday to you!) 祝你新婚快乐！(Congratulations on your wedding!) 祝你好梦！(Have a good dream!)
黛 stands for dark grey/black in Chinese traditional color system, and is also a material women in anceint times used to draw eyebrow, so it's also used to refer to beautiful women.
墨 means ink/ink color and shows a literary sense when used in name.

our chinese instructer tasked us to get a chinese name and I actually already have 白 雪恒
but Im not sure if its a proper name or not Im a male and pretty confused with chinese gendery names 😅
my name is zemheri which means death of winter(or very severe harsh winter) I didnt want it to identical with my name's sound phonetically.

So I assume you chose 白 as your surname, and 雪恒 as your personal name?
In that case, I would suggest you change 雪 to another character for a male's name, because with 雪(snow) being white and soft, it's usually an image for female in Chinese language.
You can use 冬(winter) directly instead, it's more unisex. And together the combination 冬恒 can either stand for 永恒的冬天(endless winter) or 在寒冷的冬天也很有恒心毅力 (even though in cold winter still being perseverant and strong). Because Chinese names are usually two irrelevant characters made up together (instead of using a fixed word), so what it means really depends on how you interprets it.

My (feminine) given name is Lotta, which is derived from a male name that originally meant "a free man", so I guess Lotta in way means "a free woman". I wonder how this could be translated into Chinese.
An additional question, does the Chinese name that a forgeiner gets always convey the meaning, or is the phonetical similiarity sometimes preferred? I've heard that some names are just nonsensical syllabes mashed together to imitate the original name, but I might have just misunderstood.

To answer your second question first, your Chinese name totally depends on how you want it.
If you only want a Chinese name out of convenience, you can just use characters that have similar pronunciation to your original name.
If you care more about the implication your name contains, then you can choose characters that share similar meanings. In this case, you can use a role's name in artwork as a reference(or use it without any change). Like I used to have an English name Blair because I liked this character in Gossip Girl (🤣though neither the pronunciation or the meaning has anything to do with my Chinese name).
It's a bit difficult to think of a name that has both similar meaning and pronunciation to the original one, but if you can, that would be a preference.
So common single characters that have the meaning of free are 逸、逍、遥、游、散、飘， characters for woman are女、伊、卿、姝、姬，but neither the combination sounds like Lotta… (🤣sorry) so your Chinese name could be 洛塔（luò tǎ）(only alike pronunciation), or 逸姝（yì shū）, cuz this combination sounds more natural and beautiful.

The laurel tree is called 月桂 in Chinese, and words for silence/calmness/quietness are 冷静、沉静、沉着、安静、宁静、恬静、静谧etc.
So to pick two characters to make a combination for name, I would suggest 桂宁 (guì níng) or 桂恬 (tián) , which rhyme more than others.

Hi Jin! My family name is Moughan, I don't think it's close to pronouncable in Mandarin but maybe mò is closest? My first name James means 'the supplanter', i.e. someone who takes another's position or birthright by guile or force; it's from a hebrew story where a son robs his brother of inheriting a kingdom by tricking their father. My second name, Thomas, means 'twin'.

Yes, mò would be the closest pronunciation and character having this Pinyin which also happens to be a family name is “墨”. It means ink so it delivers an image that a person is well-educated.
However, according to your description, “James” is a relatively aggressive name which may not be welcomed in Chinese😅😅, so I just took the "son/person" meaning from the story, it's written as 子.
For meaning "twin" the character is 孪, but it's only plain description not some wish or hope we would want for a person when creating a name, so 鸾 maybe a better substitution. It has same pronunciation with 孪 but it's a type of phoenix which is very respected in ancient times and Chinese legend stories.
So together 墨子鸾（mò zǐ luán）it is. It's a bit antique and similar to some ancient scholar's name, but maybe that could be another story you tell people when you're introducing this new Chinese name?

Hi! My name is Balazsy ildiko (we also list surname first). Ildiko means battle or warrior (origin is Roman). Modern version of my name can be translated to Linda which also means inner strength or beautiful. Balazsy has no real meaning but was a minor noble family name dating back to Roman times. The "zs" part of the name is basically pronounced like the French "J" in Je ne sai quoi or toujour. The "y" is pronounced like "ee".

For surname, you can use 巴（bā）as it sounds the same as "Ba" in "Balazsy".
For personal name, you can use 勇信（yǒng xìn）. 勇 means brave (just like a warrior), 信 can mean confident or honest, which I think is a very important part of inner strength.

As far as i know, my first name (Gibadullina) has no specific meaninng, My given name on the other hand has a lot of translations from different languages. For your surname I suggest 吉（jí）as it sounds like "Gi" in "Gibadullina". It means good luck in Chinese and happens to be a Chinese family name too.
For given name I suggest 清（qīng）. Normally it means clear, but being used in different words gives it different meanings. Like word “清新脱俗”, it means fresh and extraordinary, which I think approximates to "different"; word "两袖清风”、“清流” is to describe a person (specifically a government officer) with integrity, which approximates to "noble/honorable".

I'm hoping to find a name that isn't just a phonetic approximation of my given name (Josephine; "jo"), but somehow incorporates things I love or are meaningful to me. For example, I am a musician (cellist), love the autumn season, moonlight, and water (ocean/sea). I was thinking to use 秋 somehow (b/c it sounds like my nickname) together with 林, but am not sure if it's strange/inappropriate for a female. In this case I would suggest 林秋水 as your Chinese name. ( I guess you chose 林 as your surname in Chinese?)
秋 means autumn as you know, and 水 means water, which you both love. And word "秋水” can be traced back to very ancient article in 《庄子》, which originally meant river water/rain in autumn which was clear and beautiful, therefore then was used to describe females' crystal eyes. It's usually used in the combination 秋水伊人 to mean graceful women and word 伊人 can also be traced back to the most anceint poem collecction《诗经》.

Sorry no common Chinese family names sound like "Em" in "Embra", so maybe you can use 高（gāo） as "surname in Chinese", which means tall/high.
For given name you can use 乔（qiáo）which is to describe tall tree and a metaphor for person being figurely strong and tall and upright. Or 林（lín） as in woord or 森（sēn） as in forest.
So together it's 高乔/高林/高森. You can pick one you like😊

Correct me if I'm wrong…but since the direct translation of "God is my judge" in Chinese doesn't make any sense, I did more research about this sentence and this name's background story, and it shows that "Daniel" contains the meaning of justice, braveness, wisdom, and Chinese words for these are 正义、勇敢、睿智/智慧, etc. So technically you can choose any two characters to make a combination.
But to use 正、勇 is a little old-fashioned, so I would suggest 嘉睿（jiā ruì）. 嘉 means good, prize, joy, and 睿 means wise. (Actually, I borrowed this name from a friend's friend😅). Hope you like it (though the writing could be a bit complicated😂)

Usually there are three ways for foreigners to have a Chinese name:
One is to use the "sound translation", that's Mary to 玛丽, David to 大卫, Demid to 杰米德.
The second is to directly borrow a name from Chinese history/movie/literature etc., like if you really like someone, thinking of him/her as your idol, you can use that as your Chinese name to express respect. For I know, there are some foreigners in China using names like 李白、曹操. (But it may not be accepted by some people, because they would be thinking like "How can you compare yourself to the greatest poet in Chinese history?" so maybe this way is to be discussed.
And the third is to create a name using characters standing for things you want for your life or sharing similar meaning to your original name.
So in your case, you can either use 杰米德, or I would suggest 路思杰 (lù sī jié). "Road" is translated to 路, but it happens to be a surname in China. 思 means thought, and 杰 indeed is a good character, it means outstanding, so you can keep this character as you like.

So Chinese words for “winner” would be 赢家、优胜者etc., and even though 赢 and 胜 are Chinese surnames, they're a bit too rare, so I would suggest using 成 instead. It usually means complete, succeed, I guess it‘s near to "winner" on some level.
Prophet is more near to what we call “圣人” in tradtional Chinese culture; and 令媛 is a word used to call other people's daughter respectfully, while 媛 is a character meaning lovely or beauty.
So together you can use the combinaiton 成圣媛 (chéng shèng yuán) to be your Chinese name.

Well, the direct "translation" of your original name in Chinese would be 芦胜洁（lú shèng jié）.
“Reed” in Chinese is 芦苇，and 芦 happens to be a Chinese family name; and 胜 as conquer/win and 洁 as pure.
Also there's a word 圣洁 which happens to pronounce the same with 胜洁 and means holy.
And “lú shèng jié” reads beautiful in Chinese, it rhymes.

In my personal view, it is a bit old-school and comparatively rare as a formal Chinese name nowadays, because Asian people are more reserved, and 美仙 (plainly translated as beautiful angel/fairy) is a little direct and out there for Chinese. But I think it's cute to use as a nickname and for foreigners to use as a Chinese name because of the contrast. Both 美 and 仙 are characters standing for good things, so I think it's ok.

Hello, I'm a Malay and we don't have family name. My personal name is Aliff Amierul which has arabic origin. Aliff has the meaning of 'friend' and Amierul comes from arabic word 'amir' as in emirates like that. I know chinese word for friend is pengyou and I'm not sure about leader. So Chinese words having meanings similar to "friendly" are 友好, 平易近人, 友善, 善解人意, 讲理etc.; words for "leader/chief/manager" are 领导, 元首, 领头羊, 将军, 将领, 负责人, 管理者, 决策者etc. You can choose one character from each group to make a combination, but 易领（yì lǐng）would rhyme more. And 易 happens to be a family name in Chinese.

The translation is totally correct and technically you can use any characters as a name, but...
卌 is not a family name in Chinese and barely used in daily life. (Honestly I wouldn't even know the pronunciation if I didn't look it up, although it has only 5 strokes and writes very easily).
So I would suggest 匡(kuāng) as surname whose pronunciation is closer to "Qua” in "Quaranta". It's also a relatively common family name in Chinese.
For first name I suggest using just 林. Though 森林 is a fixed word, in Chinese names we prefer to use single characters' combination. Like we may use 苹 to mean safe/peaceful or use 果 to mean fruit/good result while combining other characters, but it's very rare to use word 苹果 (which means apple) directly as a name.

As you said "Igor" may originate from Ingavr as in Viking name, I can't help but think of Norse Mythology, which reminds me that in China we also have fairy stories about sea, and there happened to be a name that shares similar pronunciation to "Igor", 禺虢（yú guó）. It's the name of the sea god of East Sea, who obviously has the same ( if not more) power as a "warrior/fighter".
But to use it as a name, you may want to tone it down a bit, so you can change 禺虢 to 于虢（yú guó）. It's the same pronunciation and 于 happens to be a common family name in China, since you said your original one doesn't have a specific meaning, so you can use this combination.

I‘d suggest 高伟立(gāo wěi lì) or 高伟礼(gāo wěi lǐ) as your Chinese name.
It's a little hard to find a single character that means "mister" and also is a family name in Chinese, so I took pronunciation "go" from "Gospodinov". 高 sounds similarly and is a common family name. It means tall and can be used to describe a person both physically and mentally, so I hope it can be linked to "mister" in some way.
伟 means "grand/great"; 立 means "stand up/upright; 礼 means "manner/behave". 伟立/伟礼 together sounds like “veli” in "Veliyan". Both names are close to your original meaning, the difference is that 高伟立 delivers a more brave and serious image, while 高伟礼 feels more modest.

淑娴 can be a female name, meaning graceful, thoughtful, even obedient. 琨 means beautiful jade, 坤 refers to female in ancient Chinese (as opposed to 乾 which refers to male). But these characters are a little out-of-date to be used in names nowadays.
春藤 (春天的藤蔓 vine in spring ) is a comparatively neutral word, but as it means plants are growing fast in spring so I think it can show a positive image.

Based on the meaning I thought of one: 安赐 (ān cì) .
安 can mean safe, peaceful, calm, and its pronunciation is similar to "an' in "Joanna".
赐 means give, bestow, and usually the subject is God or emperor(😂back in ancient times), so it means being rewarded with good gifts.

In Chinese, family name is at first, given name is at last, and that's how I've been giving out Chinese names for subscribers.
However, your family name "Balachundhar" translated into Chinese（月） is a very rare one, so I would suggest switching their orders.
And also characters having meaning of "pure" in Chinese（洁、纯、净、清） are usually to describe girls, so I had to find a relatively neutral one.
So 明月（míng yuè）it is. It means bright moon, and moon in China already has the implication of pure. Compared to 月，明 is a relatively common family name. But you can also use 月明 if you really care about the order.

Last name comes from the root of something who performs tests on metals, so I thought maybe 瑟 for short? First name can be shorted to Dimas or Dima in some languages, so I thought maybe 弟马?

Well, 瑟 is not a surname in Chinese, it's an ancient instrument; and the combination of 弟(little brother) and 马(horse) would feel a bit weird used in name.
And I assume your last name is Sayre? So if you want to go with the "sound translation" way to create a Chinese name, I would suggest 舍迪玛( shè dí mǎ). 舍 might be a surname that has the most similar pronunciation to “Say” in Sayre. 迪玛 is quite common in foreigners' name.
Or I took the meaning of your original name and thought of one鲁阳夕(lǔ yáng xī). For family name, I would suggest 钟（zhōng）, it's the direct translation for "bell" but happens to be a common family name in Chinese.
Characters meaning light/bright/shiny are 光、亮、照、辉、燃etc., but to use as a given name, 亮（liàng） or 辉（huī） would be more appropriate since they deliver a more positive image and contain good hopes for the future. Or you can use 熠（yì）which is a less used character so it looks more special. And there's a phrase in Chinese called 熠熠生辉 which means shiny and spectacular.
So it's 钟亮/钟辉/钟熠.

In this case, I would suggest 泰春晖（tài chūn huī） as your Chinese name.
泰 as "family name" cuz this one has the most similar pronunciation to "Tay" in "Taylor". It's a relatively rare family name in Chinese.
春晖 is from phrase 寸草春晖. 寸草 means grass and implies kids, 春晖 means sunshine in spring and implies parents. The phrase means parents take care of their kids gently, I think it's similar to "motherly".

Based on your description, I would suggest 侯成玉（hóu chéng yù）as your Chinese name.
侯 as family name cuz the pronunciation is similar to "Hu" in "Hussain". It's also a comparatively common Chinese family name.
And since you said Arishaa could contain different meanings, I tried to combine them. Chinese words for "building something" could be 创造、成就、建树etc. , while for Highness there are 高贵、名门望族、金枝玉叶etc. So a better combination for girls would be 成玉.
Although I have to be honest that this name feels a little bookish and vintage, kind of gives a feeling of last century's miss (like Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice... not sure if I explained correctly..anyway).
So if you don't like this image, you can just use 莉莎 or丽莎（lì shā）. It's the Chinese sound translation of “rishaa” in "Arishaa".

Well, Chinese given name doesn't have to an existing word, usually it's more of a combination of two irrelevant characters only because our family like the meaning of them so they just put them together.
Like there's no such word as 成玉，but character 成 and 玉 both have its own implication, each of which corresponds to the meaning of your original name "building something" and "Highness".
(But if you search 成玉 with google images, you might find somehting interesting😉 it happens to be the name of a character in a Wuxia/Costume tv series)

"Grape" now in Chinese is 葡萄, but either the character is family name. However, I did a little research and 葡萄 was originally written as 葡陶. 陶 happens to be a relatively common family name and has same pronunciation with 萄, so you can use this one.
"Pearl" means 珍珠. 珠 is a pretty common character used for girls' name.

Correct me if I'm wrong... I did some more thinking about "to exalt or dwell" and I guess it means "onwards and upwards" or "if you're not moving forward, you're moving backward"? So Chinese phrases having this meaning are 不进则退，与日俱进，蒸蒸日上etc. hence, you can use character 昇（shēng）as given name. This character means "rise" and itself is a combination of character 日 (sun) and 升（rise）, so it delivers a message of things getting better each day.
But...if that's not the meaning of "Jezebel"😅, then for "Stephanie" I would suggest 雅（yǎ）as this means elegance, which is the image I have for this name.
And for family name meaning "healing", you can use 康（kāng）which means peaceful/healthy.

Well, from the fact that you mentioned capricorn and the heavy snow, I took a guess that you're a committed, determined and scrappy person (at least that's what google and my capricorn friends told me about this zodiac sign😅; also, there are many Chinese poems about how some plants like winter sweet and pine would become stronger and more beautiful only after suriving a heavy snow).
So those words translated into Chinese could be 有恒心，有毅力，坚韧不拔etc., and there's a phrase called 瑞雪兆丰年 or 大雪兆丰年 (heavy snow indicates a good year), so I made a combination from those to make a name: 恒瑞(héng ruì).
恒: determined, perseverant; 瑞: lucky, auspicious.

Well, words to express "simple" are 简单/简约/朴实/朴素 etc., and words to express "happy" are 快乐/开心/高兴/愉悦 etc., so I would suggest a combination of 简/朴 + 乐/悦, which gives you 4 options.
Personally, I think 朴乐 (pǔ lè) is more boyish and 简悦 (jiǎn yuè) is more girlish, so you can pick one suitable for you.
By the way, both 朴 and 简 happen to be a Chinese family name. Even though you didn't have one in your original name, but this would look more like a real Chinese name.
Also, 朴 as family name should originally be read as piáo, but since we're using its "simple" meaning in words, it's okay to read it as pǔ.
