      I wonder if they'll have 4014 ceremonially deliver 5511 to Illinois, it seems awfully strange that they would steam Big Boy up just for this little movement. If the excursion is off for this Fall, I could see it honestly happening. Not sure when they're planning 3985's move.

    Using big boy to move 5511 around the yard is An amazing thing to see it’s like a British freight or passenger engine with a tender marshaling trucks in the yard instead of a Class 08 shunter. Nice to see 4014 move around without a diesel helper.

    • @Cemi_Mhikku
      @Cemi_Mhikku Před rokem +22

      That's because it's not a helper, it's there as insurance in part, but mainly to provide enough electricity to the passenger cars so that they have fun things like lights and A/C. Steam engines don't make much of the zappy chooch. If you know what you're listening to, the engine on the diesel loco is just running at high idle or notch 1. Ain't doing shit beyond acting as a generator.

    • @spooders8424

      @Cemi_Mhikku Před rokem +11

      @@spooders8424 LOTS of reasons. The main one though is if something - anything at all - goes wrong, there are precious few places in the entire country that can work on ANY steam loco, and the ones that can work on one of this size? If there's more than the one I'll be shocked. And that's not to mention the challenge of getting enough water for her to drink and fuel oil to burn along the way... both of which can be drawn out considerably with just a bit of diesel fuel. There's also the point that currently there is one of her in even remotely close shape to operation.... would you wanna wear that out sooner than you had to if you were responsible for her care, when you know every part has to be made bespoke and any unexpected repair will likely take months?
      Hyce did a good video breaking it down a few months back, highly recommend you watch it if you're interested enough to listen to 20 minutes on this subject.

      As of right now when I’m typing this reply, 3985’s probably still in the remaining portion of the roundhouse, awaiting its turn to be out in the sun.

      Well, it's first going to need a tender. 4014 is using hers

      @@Hawkers02 Given that the RRHMA has made it public that the 3985 is gonna eventually be reunited with its own tender, I’d say the Challenger will get temporarily paired up with the 4014’s tender for the move to Silvis, then once the RRHMA completes the oil conversion and overhaul of the 4014’s tender, as per their agreement to gain ownership of 3985’s tender with UP, the 3985 will once again have its own tender behind it once its own rebuild is completed.

    The 5511 is probably the only steam locomotive in the world with Young valve gear.

    The young valve gear on U.P 5511 looks weird.
