    About 50 years ago I got a new 1911, I wasn't really experienced with the 1911 at that time and all of a sudden I was having extraction problems, later I found the hook on the extractor was partially broken off so I replaced it, not too much later the same thing happened, I think I broke about 4 extractors. I couldn't figure out what was happening, finally one day I read that you shouldn't load one in the chamber and then drop the slide on it, which I had been doing....OOPS! I put a new extractor in it and never had any more extractor problems. I didn't think that would hurt anything but I was wrong, so when Jerry says don't do that, I can personally vouch for what he is saying.

      Why i never bothered putting one in the chamber of any weapon. Too much work. Also. I look at it s a safty thing. Rather pop the mag out and extract the 1 round if chambered then put it back at the top of the mag before putting it back. Just easier and safer.

    • @jlo7770
      @jlo7770 Před 3 lety +1

      I wonder if this applies for dropping the slide, letting it go into battery under spring tension (the force itself exerting on the extractor) or if you control release the slide (the angle of the extractor in conjunction with the angle of the bullet)
      Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Basically I'm wondering if it's the slamming/ shock effect or the angle that the extractor receives the bullet that ultimately causes the wear. I would imagine it's either one or the other and the combo just makes it happen at an increased speed.
      Anyone out there know?

    • @jlo7770
      @jlo7770 Před 3 lety

      @The Reaper I can see dropping the slide on a round in the pipe but not an empty.. idk it should go into battery without a bullet without issue. If it does that seems like a gun flaw.

    • @jyc2201
      @jyc2201 Před 4 lety +7

      $0.30 in 1973 dollars is $1.74 in 2020 dollars. Your cost for a box of 50 is $2.00. Thus, casting your boolits yields similar cost savings in Jerry's heyday. I gladly pay the premium for the firearm/reloading technology we have today than save the $0.26/box in real dollar savings to "grow up" in Jerry's time. It's still worth it to reload folks!

    • @lindafoxwood78
      @lindafoxwood78 Před 4 lety +5

      I agree with that. I reload my 44's since 1986 with my own lead (got 100# of litho-plates from an old printing press). 5,000 rounds has cost me $400 over the past 30+ years. You add in the cost of the reload machine, brass cleaner/shaker, resizer, 44 mold, new brass? About $0.15 per cartridge. Ammo today is about $1.00 a round.

    The Antimony was added to reduce the lead-poisoning effect from pure lead. It is particularly used in shot-shells for skeet and trap shooting.
    For those who can’t afford the trailer, you can make a box with a sloping, 45* angle steel roof, and fill the bottom with a foot or so of sand and sawdust mix to catch the deflected rounds.

    • @Charles-A
      @Charles-A Před 6 měsíci

      You could not be further from correct. Antimony is a heavy metal and is also toxic; the only thing it is used for is to increase the hardness of the lead alloy for the different types of projectiles and prevent excessive deformation.
      Bismuth and steel are most definitely used as lead free alternatives for skeet shooting and water fowl hunting that requires using lead free loads

    • @Hellsong89
      @Hellsong89 Před 3 lety

      That is my issue with this system. Each shot that comes hits and shatters projectiles that already shattered into stopping plate. Its decent design but to minimize the shattering and dust i would probably go with vertical barrel/tube where projectiles can do circles until loss of energy to drop on the bottom. Of course surrounded with second larger pipe as second layer if first gives in over time. This way there should be less dust and fragmentation. Also spraying some water into trap aint bad idea ether to contain the lead dust, when opening system like his.

  • @ditzydoo4378
    @ditzydoo4378 Před 4 lety +1

    Hello Jerry, while your bullet trap is of a good design it does not mitigate the lead dust hazard. You trap is like the one from Savage Snail Range Systems that I used for many years at the Weatherby Rifle shop in Paso Robles, California. The difference in the two is that the Savage Snail trap has an water/oil wetting sprayer in the mouth of the catch basin that eliminates any lead dust. also the bottom of the projectile catch are has an off-set opening below it that allows the bullet fragments to fall into a recovery box. the box has a screened pump that collects the water/oil lube, and sends it back to the top of the trap face were a spray tube discharges it back into the catch basin.

Back then a lot of Smith & Wesson revolvers came in nice wood presentation boxes. Most N frames did if I remember correctly. I have 8⅜“ 629 with a quick change front sight. The blades are calibrated for 50,100,150 and 200-meters. The system required using a 240-grain bullet loaded to 1350-fps and remarkably they work perfect. Smith made numerous unique models long forgotten. There were a lot of guns made for PPC matches that shot one ragged hole all day long with 148 gr wadcutters. Remember the Smith & Wesson Model 53 22 Remington Jet Magnum Revolver. Some Smith & Wesson revolvers didn’t pan out to well.

    That is just double the way we used to catch salmon on the Puget Sound! Yep, it is called reef netting and used off Lummi Island. Very little waste of fish or fuel. Thank the Lummi Indians for their love and foresight, also the crews who are still fishing that way. Respect to all.

    Great idea in recovering the lead so it won't get into the environment. It can be melted over and over for more shooting fun, reducing the cost of reloads. I hope more shooters start doing this, bc one day we may have to use all lead free ammo, unless we become proactive on this issue. Tks for the video.

    the deflection plate angle at a range may be listed as 12 degrees so for a silhouette target
    make 2 steel triangles 56 inch "tall" with a 24 inch wide "base" for the top & bottom &
    make 2 steel trapezoids 56 inch "tall" with a 45 inch base & 21inch "top" for the sides
    to make a 5 foot-ish funnel that you weld the small end into a 2 inch slit in a 6 inch pipe
