“Monochrome Firework” = Atomic Bomb Blast. A firework that resulted in the pouring of black (monochrome) radioactive fallout. The whole song is about surviving and overcoming the bombs the USA dropped on Hiroshima (Su-metal’s hometown) and Nagasaki in WWII. In one of Su’s Sakura Gakuin diary entries, she wrote about a school field trip her class took to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial where there is a monument for Sadako Sasaki, a young school girl who survived the atomic blast but succumbed to radiation poisoning. As she was slowly dying, she asked her father if she could be cured. He told her if she folded one thousand paper cranes her wish would come true. In her hospital, she became inspirational to those around her for her tenacity and optimism. Unfortunately, she became too weak to complete her one thousand cranes. So, at the Peace Memorial, school children from all over Japan decorate Sadako’s monument with paper cranes. At the end of the official music video for Monochrome, a large tree transforms from being black and burned into a lively, colorful specimen full of life and covered with leaves and blossoms of every color in the rainbow, a “firework” beyond imagination. Those were the colors Su wondered about in the song. There are several trees in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that survived in the atomic blast zones and are still alive today. They are protected and considered National Treasures. Japan did not just survive and overcome, they thrived…
Su is 26, not 27. She became a founding member of Sakura Gakuin and BABYMETAL when she was 12 years old, not 14. Suzuka’s first professional singing group was Karen Girl’s, which she joined when she was 10 years old. She had already gained a lot of experience with singing and dancing at Actors School Hiroshima (ASH). Su was admitted to ASH with a fully paid years scholarship, after passing the solo singing audition when she was 8 years old.
I have REALLY been waiting for your reaction to this one! Also, they changed the piano for the second verse because in the album version the second verse has a secondary guitar track that isn't in the first verse.

My interpretation: As we experience catastrophe, we will move forward with a hopeful view of a tomorrow filled with rainbow colors. The shining star that vanishes, a loved one’s warmth that will fade, and the dusk of Ragnorak (end of the world) are all akin to tragedies in our lives. This is the Monochrome Fireworks, an explosion of pain and grief. The progression of how will we… to. WE WILL ILLUMINATE… shows our increasing conviction in the face of the tragedy to move towards a hopeful tomorrow. After-all, no matter how long the night, the morning will come, so just smile! Nice one, thanks! I just love to see how Su-metal works on her singing technique. It's not a thing we can usually see on live performances because it's too much going on there. Great reaction! Although Babymetal did not officially say, some fans suggest that this song is about the tragedy of war, specifically speaking, bombing. "Monochrome fireworks" can be the metaphor of the bombs falling and exploding. If we consider the word Ragnarok, the bomb can be more apocalyptic. Maybe we should think of the fact that Su was born in Hiroshima, and the official lyric video of "Monochrome" has strangely unnerving images.
If you curious bout the three ladies with white robe, they're supposed to be the avengers before the second "the first take" video momo announced as the last piece of the babymetal puzzle
This has to be one of my favourite versions of a favourite Babymetal song. The stark intimacy really lets the emotion shine through, and makes me hope that we'll get more First Take versions in future. In fact there's a version of The One on First Take, but this time with the addition of Momoko that's just fantastic as well. And speaking of Momo, this was released at the time when anticipation was high that she would be knighted as the third member, and so she was. I often think that the visual of the three backup singers holding hands was a subtle hint about that.
The thing about this version that I love is that this is all about vocals, so Su can just give 100% to singing without having to worry about doing choreo, and she sounds even better than she usually does. Magical!

I'm dying for you to review Su's cover of Tamashii No Rufuran (Refrain), also known as Soul's Refrain from the Legends 1997 concert in 2013. The original song's version (kind of an 80's disco vibe) is from the Anime, Genesis Evangelion. Su and the Kami band take it to a whole new level. Babymetal style.
There's a piano version of The One called The One Stairway to Living Legend, it's on their official channel. It's The First Take version, but more complete.
That one we call the "Goodbye" version. It was released when they announced Babymetal would come to a "halt" for an unspecified time. Many believed it was the end of Babymetal, but thank to the Fox God, they came back 😁

You're wearing a Dayton Flyers shirt? Huh, I was born near Dayton and went to Wright State for my undergrad. I know you didn't mention this, but I this this video itself is a final goodbye to/acknowledgment of Yui. I feel that the three hooded figures represent younger Su, Moa, and Yui and that the spirit of Yui is always there with the other two, that their bond can't and won't be broken. I say "final" because in the second BM song on The First Take, "The One" as you said, Momoko makes an appearance and that video was released not long after she was announced as the official third member. Nothing officially has been said and nothing likely ever will be said, but that's my take.

Ragnarok is the end of the world in Norse mythology, so the interpretation could be "even at the end of the world, we can rise again together and see a tomorrow again. It's both simple and beautiful, just smile". The lyric video led also to the interpretation that the song is a metaphor of the Hiroshima bombing during the WWII. The monochrome firework is the bomb (in the video the "fireworks" goes upside down and hit a city) and it caused the end of the world and the absence of colors, but Japan was able to move on and experience rainbow colors again 💖 That's not an official interpretation though, but it was a popular fan speculation when the song came out. I'm so happy you're continuing the journey into the Fox Hole!! If you've not seen the lyric video it makes it very explicit (look at the visuals) what at least a good part of the song is about (the leadin on the live version also has a "hint" running through it) - especially "monochrome firework" and for me makes the song so much more powerful - great reaction to a beautiful song. So many theories about the meaning of the song... or variations on a theory. I heard a related rumor, which was that Su's grandmother lost her ability to see color after the Hiroshima bombing, and had supposedly written about it. Therefore, the bomb would be, "the firework that causes monochrome." I'm not confident in that interpretation at all, but I suppose it's possible the lyricists used experiences related to Su in writing the song.

I think that "monochrome firework" is referring to how the blast of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima turned the world monochrome and the color came back with the hope of rebuilding and recovery.
This song has nothing to do with being bombed. In an interview, Su indicated that it was a hopeful song about bringing light into the dark world and illuminating rainbow colors and smile. In Monochrome live and in the concert i went to, when she speaks to the crowd, she has them get their phones out and turn their lights on. She says, "Help me shine light on this dark, dark world, take your phone out......" She was surprised that the one take version was having people cry. As she stated, it's not a sad song. It's a hopeful one.
The imagery in the official video contradicts what you are saying, but you could be correct if the original songwriter feld differently. Nothing Sue said disproves that the underlying intent that the song is about a bomb, a "monochrome firework" which may be the imagery a child would believe upon seeing the explosion, and then the aftermath and, finally, the hope for the future. Also a sad song can also be about hope. Last, not everyone listens and interprets songs the same, to you it may be hopeful, to others it may be sad or happy, there is no right answer. Peace.
