Honestly though there is no harm in removing the statues but there is harm in allowing those statues to persist. Progress involves letting go of physical remnants as a show that we are more dedicated to our potential now and in the future as opposed to our past limitations. Why should we glorify folks with legacies contributed significantly to discriminatory attitudes and practices?

The statues are being removed lawfully in response to protests against racial injustice as a means of appeasement and distraction from actual justice and equality. Furthermore the only statue of Lincoln I know to have been removed is the Emancipation Memorial which depicts a slave in a subordinate position and gives Lincoln more credit than he deserves for the end of slavery. Lincoln was hesitant to end slavery and even wanted to return black people to Africa. The memorial also downplayed the writers of slaves and abolitionists in black emancipation. Wanting to remove that memorial fires not imply black people would prefer slavery, and your understanding of emancipation is the prime example of why they wanted the memorial removed. That being said the end goal is actual equal treatment under the law and protesting is the only thing that seems to work for black folks according to history. The statues are a small but still notable aspect of the continued misrepresentation of our country’s racial history and the disrespect and dismissal of black lives and agency.

Philando Castile - Was armed at a traffic stop, had a permit, however, said it in a confusing way and did such an action the officer believed he was pulling the weapon out (which is plausible considering the evidence). The officer shot him in fear for his life. He also did not comply to open his hand to show the officer he's not gonna hurt him.
Akai Gurley - This is a man who didn't do anything wrong per se, however, the shooting was an accident. The area they were in is notorious for danger and violence, with 2 homicides there in the last week at the time. Training tells officers to take caution in vertical areas, especially ones like this. The officer had his flashlight out and after hearing a noise, accidentally (Really an accident, muscle movements tensley squeezed the trigger just enough) pulled the trigger, sending a bullet at the wall which ricocheted and hit Akai in the chest. He was not aimed at by the cop as depicted in the video, instead accidentally shot by him. The officer didn't even see Akai.
Tamir Rice - Took orange cap off toy gun that symbolizes it was a fake gun, ran around pointing at people and threatening to shoot. He raised the handgun (fake) at the police, and they rightfully believed he was about to shoot them. They open fired on Tamir in self-defense.
Rayshard Brooks - Perhaps the most guilty on this list, no clue why Storybooth included him. Rayshard (who I'm gonna be calling Ray) was asleep in his car in a Wendy's drive-through, clogging the line-up. Police did a breathalyzer test which proved he had drunk over legal amounts. The officers were cooperative and put him in handcuffs, at which he struggled out, grabbed a taser from an officer, shot him with it, and ran. He shot the officers again and again with it and one officer ended up seriously shocked. Ray was then shot, another act of self-defense by police.

Honestly though there is no harm in removing the statues but there is harm in allowing those statues to persist. Progress involves letting go of physical remnants as a show that we are more dedicated to our potential now and in the future as opposed to our past limitations. It is perfectly reasonable for a minority to be uneasy because they attend a school with a statue and building named after a racist/eugenicist. Why should we glorify folks with legacies contributed significantly to discriminatory attitudes and practices?
Realmisty._. Jo that’s a terrible comparison to make. You’re talking about a person who was the victim of police brutality at no fault of her own in comparison to someone with controversial legacy. It makes more sense for people to sympathize with a victim of violence and discrimination rather than a perpetrator of violence and discrimination. And the news reports on all of it, the Brianna Taylor vandalization just caused more outrage.
Jaster there’s a distinction between rioting and protesting for one. And just because a statue was removed in response to a protest/riot doesn’t mean that was the purpose of the protest/riot. The removal of statues has been a method of appeasement intended to distract us from continuing to pursue justice and equality
Jaster Jaster it’s like you didn’t even pay attention to my response. First of all, it’s not like regular protestors have the resources to physically remove statues themselves. The statues are being removed lawfully in response to protests against racial injustice as a means of appeasement and distraction from actual justice and equality. Furthermore the only statue of Lincoln I know to have been removed is the Emancipation Memorial which depicts a slave in a subordinate position and gives Lincoln more credit than he deserves for the end of slavery. Lincoln was hesitant to end slavery and even wanted to return black people to Africa. The memorial also downplayed the writers of slaves and abolitionists in black emancipation. Wanting to remove that memorial fires not imply black people would prefer slavery, and your understanding of emancipation is the prime example of why they wanted the memorial removed. That being said the end goal is actual equal treatment under the law and protesting is the only thing that seems to work for black folks according to history. The statues are a small but still notable aspect of the continued misrepresentation of our country’s racial history and the disrespect and dismissal of black lives and agency.
I just got chills when they showed gorge Floyd with his head shoved onto the road with a police man on top of him. To anyone who is racist I would like to ask why. What is the satisfaction of judging a group of people just because one person did something that you didn’t like.

Racism is unfortunately passed down by generations, and though it may be difficult to admit, it is all a result of how our minds work. All of your beliefs root from the experiences you've had in the past, and this leads to the assumption that because a certain person is bad, every one of "their type" must be the same.
