    BIG sound, clean and tight - nothing got away from the engineers on this one. Wow.

    Lucky you for finding this-one of the best live versions of this song ever recorded. In most subsequent live versions the song was stretched to a 10 minute power ballad (w backing of full stadium tour band), those unabridged live versions play well to the spectacle of stadium concerts-this version; however, sticking close to studio version as needed for this BBC broadcast format, is just a great study in a pro band delivering the goods while Mark dances in the pocket pushing/pulling on both ends effortlessly decorating with his finger style attack. Notice the placement of the signature lick at the end of the solo, one bar later than recording. This is the case on every live version you’ll ever hear b/c Mark is a pro and lets it go only when it sits perfectly in the groove. All feel, nothing forced. Novel delivery every time!

      " Notice the placement of the signature lick at the end of the solo, one bar later than recording" Yup. whenever we did this song live in my band I would also do the extra bar before the signature lick. As many other guitarists i've seen in my day who all said 'yeah I know sultans solo' if they can't execute the signature lick IMHO why bother. Sadly I've seen many claim it and fail. Its so integral and this BBC live recording just shows how great it is, even when delivered late on cue! Knopfler I've always said was an egregiously underrated guitarist. Those who know 'get it'.....

      Before 1980, live versions of Sultans were closer to studio version. This live version is from 1978, that's why is so close to studio version.

    I love the complete band. The only Dire Straits to me. Marc K. is of course the shining star, but they are all doing well. I love that bass sound. That is how a p bass should sound.

    Saw 'em at a small pub near VIctoria Station in 76-77 I think. I thought Knopfler had mastered JJ Cale's style but they had no songs. What do I know?

      He doesn't speak in full sentences, but what I hear is this:
      "Ok, let's have a go at the single. A song about a jazz band, partly, a song called "The Sultans of Swing", because the band, that's what the band was called, "The Sultans of Swing". Ok."
      What I learned was that Mark Knopfler once sat in an almost empty bar somewhere in London where there was a band playing called "Sultans of Swing".

    • @AFaceintheCrowd01
      @AFaceintheCrowd01 Před 2 lety +1

      @@broyout3586 Another explanation for the origin of the title is, MK saw a man wearing a turban one April in London, and said, Look, guys, the first sultan of spring. Misheard by a friend as "sultan of swing."

    Not as good as the 78 OGWT live track. This one sounds a bit stilted.
