  • flyhalo.com - The long wait is over, and the Niviuk Dobermann2 is finally hitting US shores! Shane is unable to fly it for a couple days, so instead decided he just HAD to do an "unboxing" video. Have a look as Shane explains some of the improvements over the original Dobermann, and call Team Fly Halo for a demo today!

Hey Shane. I have to nerd it up a bit about the leading edge reinforcement. The Nitinol (I think it is pronounced Ny-tin-ALL) wire is an alloy of titanium and nickel, which makes it incredibly stiff and lightweight. It also has a neat property that when heated, it reforms its original shape (its called a shape memory alloy), this can be as low as hair dryer temperatures. I can't find any documentation for it from Niviuk since they have not released a manual, but they may have done this for easy repair of a bent leading edge. THIS IS JUST SPECULATION SO DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS THE MANUFACTURER INSTRUCTS YOU, DOING THIS COULD DESTROY YOUR WING, but in theory you can fix a bent leading edge with a hairdryer. How cool is that?

You would be geeky enough ;) I just couldn't remember at the moment if I was pronouncing it right. Here's some info about Nitinol, particularly that there are two types - shape-memory and super-elastic. I'm guessing they use the latter of the two: jmmedical.com/resources/122/How-Does-Nitinol-Work%3F-All-About-Nitinol-Shape-Memory-and-Superelasticity.html

Oh yeah, and here's a discussion about the use of it in some of Niviuk's competition gliders - www.paraglidingforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=p436128

Also, is that a sharknose leading edge and if yes what does that mean for performance? I've heard it referenced here and there and I understand it has a different nose profile and I think smaller cell openings. Anyways, if you could enlighten me that would be awesome. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Halo!
I really need to know your opinion about Dobermann 2. I'm from Russia. And in our country nobody flies on this wing now. And there's no one to ask. What do you think about this wing? What is his behavior, what load he likes, how he behaves during takeoff and landing? Can you compare it with Ozon Viper 4, Dudek Snake XX? I really need this information. Help me please.
    Regards, Aleks.
