      @@HelloOnepiece I don't think that's entirely fair. MAV is not without its difficulties but in my experience services are generally punctual, carriages are in decent order and some are very nice indeed and the food very acceptable at reasonable prices. One also shouldn't forget the low ticket prices, particularly since the introduction of the monthly Hungary Pass. Overall I'd say you get much more than you pay for when you travel with MAV. It's at outlying example but ticket prices in the UK are usually so high I've often decided against travelling which surely defeats the point of a rail network.

    My favorite dining car experience: After spending 2 months traveling in India, I flew from Mumbai to Frankfurt. Booked a day train to Milan. Train took about 12 hours. I was awed to have spent a week in the Himalayas, then spend a day riding through the Alps, past Lake Cuomo.
    I was the only one in the dining car passing through Germany, Switzerland into Italy. Breath taking views.
    The chef and staff served me freshly cooked pasta, steak, veggies, salads and deserts that were the two of the best meals I have ever eaten, anywhere! The suggested wines were perfection. Back in 2000, I think my food and drink cost about $100 for the day! Yum!!!
    My friends picked me up, promptly, at midnight in Milan for another week of fun.
    Great memories.

    My best dining car experience was when I was a senior in high school. The Rio Grande Zephyr which was the last private train in the US (until Brightline) was about to be taken over by Amtrak so I rode the train from Salt Lake City to Denver and the dining car experience was fantastic, basically what train travel was like in the United States until the 1960's. I was lucky to take the trip when I did because a landslide closed the line just a couple of weeks later and caused the train to run over only a portion of the route until the Amtrak takeover and several months afterward.

    I used to patronise the London-Norwich service with an excellent dining car many, many years ago. For passengers only going as far as Colchester, the crew could serve drinks, 3 freshly-cooked courses (no microwave) and coffee and take payment in 50 minutes. As a video maker, I suggested this and other transport topics to BBC-tv for a documentary series. "No," they said, "no-one would be interested in programmes about trains, ships, planes and stuff."

    Worst dining car experience is in Thailand. Boxed slop for $6, which is waaaay too expensive for what you get. Always buy from the station before you board. Hopefully they get a new contractor for food soon. Funny enough, day trains used to have better catering until they let the contract run out.

    Thanks Paul. Nice video! Would like to do this train myself one day. Just a pity it only runs during the Summer (tho I understand why) as Summer is my least favourite time to visit Europe!
    LOL Split Station has not changed much if any since I took a domestic night train trip there in late 2009 from Rijeka via Ogulin. I think you perfectly described it as "unassuming". Yeah there's a lot of buses (as well as ferries) that stop there one reason I think is because the rail network sadly doesn't go further south so when I went to Dubrovnik I had to swap to a bus.
    It sad to see the amount of graffiti at Croatian stations. Rijeka was the same. In October last year I went from Ljubljana to Pula on the Istrian Peninsula and sadly Pula Station though looking quite a nice little station, was quite badly graffitied both inside and out. By the way I fully recommend this route (maybe an idea for you for another Summer or Autumn trip), especially if you haven't been to Ljubljana or Pula on your travels. But maybe after the large rail works south of Ljubljana to the Croatian border are finished. Sadly there's no similar night train into and out of Pula. Would be cool if there was.
    My favourite dining experience is probably also on MAV train, the Cittadela Eurocity day train, Budapest Deli to Ljubljana in 2016, again with a delicious Paprika Chicken and Gnocchi lunch and Soproni beer at as you say, a very good price.

We did pick up a bit of a delay somewhere on the way, I think at some boarder while I was fast asleep. By the time I reached Vienna it was a 45 min delay, which was a real bummer. You get a partial refund if your train is delayed by more than an hour, so I just missed out on that. I think I paid about 100€, I booked on ÖBB roughly 6 months ahead.

    Hi Paul,
    One thing you did cover and importantly. When you left your cabin to go to the dining car. How did you lock your cabin? Or is it left unlocked.
    June planning a 2 month train train through Europe/UK (every 2 years?

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  Před 3 měsíci

      As I mentioned in the sleeper room tour, the cabin can only be locked from the inside, so if you leave it'll have to be unlocked.

      @@Paul_Lucas I would love to do another overnight while I'm over there.
      The last time it was with Trenitalia from Messina to Genoa. First Class cabin was shocking, no aircon, toilets broken, no food or water to buy. Second class had better facilities and aircon.
      Have you done the overnight from Messina, Sicily to Genoa Italy 🇮🇹?

    That's a pair of Ukrainian carriages at 16:41 followed by an OBB (Austrian) one and then GYSEV (northwestern Hungary/Austrian company. Wonder where that train was heading leaving from Keleti-don't usually see non-Railjet Austrian carriages and I've never seen a GYSEV and Ukrainian carriage attached before...

      That is Kyiv - Vienna sleeping carriages attached to Zahony - Vienna train ("Hortobagy"), via Budapest Keleti now (Nyugati in the past, don't know why they switched stations).

    • @Londonsteve56
      @Londonsteve56 Před 4 měsíci +1

      That might be because Peroni is a much superior beer compared to Soproni. I wish it wasn't but it needs to be said. For on train beer quaffing you can't beat CD dining cars. I don't know what's available on an ICE Bordbistro these days but being able to draw on German brewing culture is a pretty good start.

    sadly not operating anymore,if the European trains want more passengers they must up their game not all of us will go cheap BUT we will not be ripped off,services on board must get better especially on long jurneys. I recently did Paris to Milan and at every stop they gave us smokers enough time to have a smoke,same as Milan to Bari

      Euros and dollars are not really different most of the time. For most users local currencies are more important than USD, and anyway, Euros are used by quite a lot of people for comparing prices, especially on the continent where most people travel by train.

      Dollars mean nothing to me, I live in Europe. I'm happier to deal in GBP, EUR or even HUF. USD is a global reserve currency for the banking sector but for most people it isn't of daily relevance. For example, I haven't a clue what the USD/GBP rate is as of today, whether it's low or high, etc.
