I take the growing up thing as them saying that their bodies only become "immortal" when they've fully grown.
It does actually kinda make sense if we assume immortality refers to not aging.
When children are growing up they don't actually technically age (as in the DNA is breaking down. Otherwise we'd all basically suffer from similar effects to Progeria and die in our teens and twenties) so having immortals only become immortal when they are fully grown isn't too arbitrary in a story.
I really wanted to se more of Michel Sheen in this role, or at least an action role...he really is great actor with a lot of potential but he always ends up in boring drama films or playing a side character..err or twilight.
I know this is old but I had to comment. The wolves in the woods aren't lycans, they are werewolves from the original line. Firstly you can tell this by the fact they are never in human form, that was the curse of the original and in some ways what made them inferior to Vampires and even Lycans, they were stuck as beasts with no real tactics or anything. Another way, going with how you mentioned Lucien looking different would be nice, if you look at Lucien or the Lycans you can see clear differences in the forms between them and the werewolves anyway. Werewolves look well more wolf like, longer shaggier hair, snouts longer and almost never seem to walk on two legs with some other minor feature differences while the lycans had less fur, shorter snouts and unless running were almost always on two legs. This movie really helped flesh out the difference between the two races in subtle ways along with the parts of Evolution to finally finish the puzzle of why Lucian was so different and important.
Also like to point out that what Selene said in the first movie about the Lycans changing could be a continuity issue as you said or it could've been honestly what Selene thought. Yes she specializes in killing them but that doesn't mean she stops to take down what controls how they transform. On top of that as I recall most of the information about the Lycans and the history of them is either forbidden or altered by Viktor to fit his narrative of the situation. Or a third option may be that the further the line gets away from Lucien the less control over the transformation the new Lycan has.
As for the transforming at will, it could also be they meant the older ones that were closer to William have that power, like how in Vampires The Masquerade the older generation you are the stronger you are, and most werewolves by her time period aren't as high a generation so have weaker abilities.
Yes I honestly didn't get how he didn't see the difference between the werewolves that were created by Williams and Lucien cause it's a drastic change....the werewolves looked more wolf like vs Lucien, even Willam looked totally different he was much bigger and white colored not to mention looked more like a wolf from the neck up..... some people really don't take the time to notice these things.....even the classes are different you have first, second and third generations of werewolves and lycans, but when your a fan of these movies you tend to catch on.
Except he has pointed out several details before, this seems more like a perspective thing.
Okay, fun story time. The first time I watched this film was on a laptop in the back of a tattoo parlor (with my back to the door like a dumbass) the fucking second the cliff sex started, my buddy walked in, which was followed by the longest uncomfortable silence I've ever sat through.
I always wondered what Marcus would have thought of Lucian. I imagine he'd have gone mad scientist to try to find a way to use the Lycans to help his brother, or perhaps he would have treated them better seeing Lucian and the Lycans as everything William could have and should have been. Somehow I don't think (since Marcus was sleeping during all this time) that Viktor ever actually told him the truth about the Lycans and how they came to be so that it would better fit his own narrative and by the time Marcus was suppose to wake up it would be literal ancient history and no one would know.
I wonder what would happen if Marcus and William were still in charge and William could be in human form. Lucian would be his right hand man for sure. I loved the story of William and Marcus.
Who cares about the Lucien/Sonia thing, this prequel was clearly set up to tell the legendary story of the epic Lucien/Reyes bromance.
A classic for the ages.

On the vampires being useless against Lycans thing. Well in Underworld it made more sense that Vampires could hold their own, since they had the benefit of firearms and explosives to level the playing field.
However, in Medieval they relied on crossbows and swords, which weren't as effective and thus the Wolves superior speed and strength essential gave them the edge hence the reason they are pretty much killing every vampire they run into. Yes some of the vampires do kill them but they are usually the more skilled and powerful like Victor and Sonja.
Then again that's just my theory.

Mainly has to do with the animals they draw power from. Vampires are essentially humans with bat like chracteristics, while Werewolves are wolf humans. Wolves are naturally stronger than bats, hence the reason they are generally more powerful.
Also Werewolves have the added benefit of getting stronger when they transform, as normally their strength is equal to a vampire's but once they shape shift the massive boost in power essentially makes them too much for the vampires to handle.
+Hamza Shukri Because Lycans are truly the stronger species. They are just nerfed in every other movie and TV show to satisfy the vampire loving culture.

The vampires were never below the lycans because once in wolf form they lost their human resources because their animal instincts set in vs the vampires could use weapons and we're a lot more agile than the lycans or werewolves.
The oldest trick in the book works since this movie is from like 500 years ago. Or a millenia ago. Or whatever they retconned the time period to.
Unless the movie is set in ancient Babylon, it's still an old trick. By a couple of thousand years.

Michael sheen was the reason this was made. Women loved this character and actually wanted to see him again.
Also not to be that guy but in the beginning when you do the whole "take out those swords" thing it's a little distracting you pull out a Katana, a Japanese Sword, when the movie takes place in Euorpe and they are seemingly using Broadswords.
great review but bladed whips do exist, it was a common use of torture for the Romans. they had bits of metal and bone at the end of the leather thongs.

I hope for once that I'm being clever here but I had a thought about Victor surviving the sword to the head slash fall. He fell into some water...Vampires getting injured and falling into water only to end up OKAY...seems to be a thing. I swear you see like like two more times in the previous movies. Which reminded me of the whole water deal in 'Blood Wars'.
I don't wanna give the creators too much credit but at least, there seems to be some sort of theme.

@@deusdeaconReviews You're absolutely right. I guess when the mythos from a slew of movies doesn't make sense/gets added to/gets erased/changed so much....you look for a pattern. Any pattern. Anything to make this shit make sense.
I can't remember if there's an official reason for my thoughts or not, but it always seemed to me that the reason the vampires were on top was that they were more organized. The entire reason the idea of a big pack of Lycan or Lycan with advanced weapons was a problem was that it took the vampires' main advantage.
Thinking a bit more, that actually probably comes more from White Wolf games than Underworld.
It's funny you mention White Wolf because I believe they actually sued the producers of Underworld for plagiarism which was settled out of court.
For some reason in general in Underworld sunlight is rarely used as the huge advantage it could be. For example if the Lycans had escaped during the day they could have avoided a ton of vampires being around, and the final attack could have been much easier as well. The sun is THE biggest advantage that Lycans have, but they never use it.
They include this version of Sonja’s death scene from this movie in the 4K version of “Underworld,” which is cool.

Ive always used the same head cannon for vampires and lycans growing up. Essentially they age slower the older they get.

So the bit where she cuts a werewolf clean in half isnt as far fetched as it seems, ive been watching forged in fire lately and ive seen the test swords and knifes on boars and cut clean though it and that was a sword made by a normal blacksmith not a master and been swang by a human not a vampire, so yes i can see a master crafted blade been swang by a super strong vampire easily bisecting a werewolf.
Theres a little bit more material when it comes to a human.
Sonja's death scene is tragic.
I felt real sorry for Lucian in that scene as he had to watch the love of his life be burned to a crisp😔💀
About the vampires becoming myths and legends thing. Remember, Viktor went back and basically edited history, its possible that he had something to do with making the vampire legends the way they are. Also, this movie took place centuries before the first movie, so it isn't super inconceivable that vampires could fade into mythology.

personally i like the character of raze getting a scene in this, mostly because i'm a huge fan of the "human big and mean enough to fight the beast bare handed" cliche, it doesn't get used a lot anymore

Ok ik I'm a few years late and probably hear it but at 23:40. I thought her saying they were able to change at will means they can change at anytime, and the newer ones only could change during a full moon. That's how I interpreted the saying

Right before the guards give them the food, some literally splashed on the camera and did not get edited out
as you said "maybe it's being miss remembered" maybe the death was instantanious, but lucien, grief stricken and holding on to hate for several thousand years, doesn't remember it like that, instead remembering that she suffered horrifically, it's like when we remember an incident that happens to us in our youth, half the time things we remember as being awful and terrible where really just dumb and kind of bad, like an incident of getting into a school fight, you remember being mercilessly beaten while everyone laughed on, when in reality you just got knocked around a little and didn't know how to process it at the time, or like when you get broken up with in highschool, it seems like the worlds over but years later you look back and it's like meh, the only problem is lucien witnessed the death of the woman he loved so his mind overdid it and his grief never let him clear it up in his head and since none of the other lycans where actually their, they don't realise it wasn't as bad as lucien makes it out to be
You sound like someone that never properly looked back at their life but only believed what others told you of your experiences, from their point of view, because it benefits them for you to take their side. No, it was exactly as bad as you remembered.

One of the things I thought made Viktor a bad leader was his lack of gratitude and not being rewarding to his subjects.
I know there’s that need to be a hard, stern leader, but if he doesn’t learn to be rewarding every now and then, he eventually runs the risk of losing loyalty from his men. Look what happened with Tanis. He went behind Viktor’s back cause he knew there was nothing to gain from ratting out Lucien.
I’m not saying he should be TOO rewarding but just enough to continue inspiring loyalty.
In Game of Thrones, Tywin Lannister practically had “Don’t Fuck with Me” tattooed on his forehead, but even he knew when to be rewarding to those who served him, even to people who were previously his enemies.

Oh you're saying Sonia, still there are similarities like the imagery of slavery and the sky being dark all the time it even showed her coming back from the dead. But she was after gold not silver so it falls apart there.
I have issues with regards to "Immortality" in any movies if they need to "feed"
immortality refers to the ageing process, they can clearly take damaged and be killed which lack of nutrition (whatever nutrition blood may give) would be part of that, invulnerablity would be closer to what you're thinking.

so I watched this first so I liked this a lot
They killed the whip wielding slave master in this movie, so they cant use the Whip Vampire from Underworld 1 and kill him in the prequel.
I've been enjoying most of this guy's reviews, but this one comes across as just nit picking. It was a good movie, especially for a prequel.
They always nit pick the underworld series and for me it's one of the better stories that tell how vampires and werewolves or lycans came into existence unless you like that same ole Dracula story that has been told over and over.
It nit picking to question basic rules and logic. It's finest if you like these movies. It just means you have different priorities.

If the movie focused less on Sonia and Lucien, and more on Lucien gathering Lycans and werewolves and humans to his side to fight Viktor, the movie would be so much better. As is, it's a decent, but a completely unnecessary prequel for the franchise

I kind of feel like they missed a beat in this of showing that what actually makes Lycans more of a threat than Werewolves (non changing ones, not sure if they differentiate species based on that) is their ability to keep their human faculties while transformed meaning they can have the strength and agility of a werewolf with the claws and teeth while also being able to think tactically and fight more like men like werewolves just fight on pure animal instinct. It always kinda of feels like werewolves and Lycans fight in a very similar way.
And ye on how are vampires winning, even if we go off Lycans turning the tide as they can think and plan how on earth did vampires not get wiped out entirely before guns are invented when even with guns shooting silver they are so incapable of fighting them, you'd think up until automatic guns the Lycans would have been slaughtering the vampires then guns finally evened things out.

In the underworld series werewolves are always referred to as lycans thats why I did too, but also this video is half a year old and I'm not gonna be looking at another underworld movie anytime soon, So I can do as you say, But its pretty irrelevant at this point.

i didnt like Sonia's death even the first time that I saw it. it was too quick to serve as Lucians motivation to engage the vampires for hundreds of years in war. not to mention the fact that she was blonde in Lucians original visions

Lucien was just a charismatic leader its got nothing to do with control.
when she says olde rmore powerful lycans she might not have been refering to how LONG they where lycan but WHEN they where turned and such, just like with vampires, the stronger the vampire is that turns you the stronger you will innitially be, sure i'm sure lycans all can eventually reach the ability to turn at will, but those turned by lucien and the others like him would probably have this ability innately rather than having to develop it, so when she says "stronger and older" she might not be refering to lycans who have GROWN stronger and older, but that OLDER lycans are STRONGER by default due to how close their blood is to the original, granted, that's how my head canon always saw it, i mean if you really wanna get technical about it, they never mention rumulus and remus in this one either, it'd have been nice to see those two to some extent and if remus, i think it was remus, was bitten by a bat as the other was a wolf, and never able to become human how did the vampires get the way they are nd why aren't their man bats all over the place, see, the story isn't gonna make sense with it's own origin story anyway, so it's best not to think about it too much
not sure where your getting rumulus and remus, it was show in the second film that marcus was the first vampire and william was the first lycan

Rise of the Lycans and Evolution are the best ones to me. Hell even the first one was pretty badass. Blood Wars was ok. Awakening needs to not exist.
compared to awakening yes you could argue blood wars is okay however if you look at the entire series its still incredibly subpar due it inclusion of mystical nonsense in a series that favoured a scientific explanation, That is of course only one example of the things it does terribly wrong though, but I will concede the fact that it tries to erase awakening is at least commendable.

To me this is a good world building movie nothing more really I enjoy it alot but it's world building and nothing more.

Honestly I know the second film and this one get a lot of shit. But I really liked them and think this have worked just fine as a trilogy because after this film I literally couldn't stand the films anymore they're boring. Like so boring I fucking hated them they'd have these really cool ideas but fucking waste it. And they fucking sequel bait Michael coming back, my favorite fucking character in this series after Victor, only to kill him off screen at the end of the fifth film because they literally couldn't figure out what to do with him or some stupid shit. So they instead think, "Well we have this all powerful immortal who has returned from being fucking dead what should we do with him? Amnesia? Nah. Nobel sacrifice? Nah. Mario boost for some random person who just shows up? Fucking genuine genius idea there." Like honestly wtf is that stupid shit. It pisses me off and I fucking hated it. I hated it so much I hold the last 2 films in the regard as this guy holds the Hellraiser series. Pointless bullshit for the sake of pointless bullshit.

The virus explanation is another reason why I hate, HATE the original Underworld movie. Vampires and werewolves are better when they can't be explained by science.

Actually the virus explanation has been done to death starting with the novel I Am Legend. Give me purely supernatural vampires and werewolves over lame-ass virus ones any day.

I'm sorry, but supernatural ones are better than virus ones. Especially if you go with the original folklore that, despite being supernatural beings, werewolves are NOT immortal - according to folklore they can be killed by old age, disease, drowning, etc. (Silver was for vampires.) However, when they died they came back as vampire. Which is another reason I despise the Underworld movies. There's zero reason vampires and werewolves should be enemies when werewolves are destined to become vampires when they die.
