I feel like Korra doesn't get enough credit for her waterbending skills. Even without using the avatar state, her waterbending is still extremely powerful.
People always ignore how powerful Korra is without the Avatar state. Like she went through almost the entirety of Book: one without the avatar state or Airbending.

Korra's bending in this episode was top tier and cemented her status as a powerhouse
Fire:
Scales a large building, using fire jets from her feet, in seconds, whilst also simultaneously carrying several large boulders
Earth: Summons several car sized boulders with a single stomp(twice), and then hurls them across a massive distance with enough force to shake the Colossus
Air: Provides the remaining force needed to push the Colossus back with enough force destroy a building, uses an airspout to leap onto the Colossus' knee, which was at building height
Water:
Lifts up 2 several story high waves, and launches them across a large distance with enough force to completely push the Colossus back several meters, which was only accomplished by the combined efforts of a large team of Airbenders and also somehow cover the back of the Colossus
She then, almost instantly, freezes this wave, trapping the Colossus
Lifts up a 3rd several story high wave to immobilize the cannon
The Colossus is able to casually smash through buildings, yet it requires more power to break out of Korra's ice, yet even then, Korra is still able to block a strike from it for several seconds, made even more impressive since we know Kuvira is holding nothing back and this is the full strength of the Colossus
They don't call her a legend for nothing
Also noteworthy is her intelligent use of the Avatar State. Instead of just staying in it, she's using it in bursts, to give extra power when it's necessary, which minimizes the risk to the Avatar cycle. This is perhaps a response to how close Zaheer came to ending it. I feel like most Avatars (such as the more diplomatically minded Aang) could never have done this, as it puts more emphasis on the Avatar's own personal combat ability, as opposed to drawing on their previous reincarnations' knowledge (though obviously Korra doesn't have those memories anyway).
And if this isn't enough, next episode will definitely remove any doubt that Korra is probably the most powerful Avatar in history
Korra wave was over 25 stories tall. Which is pretty huge.

fk Asami, I always haven't liked Asami and I still don't now. First she betrays her father who loved her just to protect her boyfriend who cheats on her. Then she helps take down equalist. Season 2 and 3 she doesn't do anything but sit there and be moody. In the end she just steals Korra and turn her bi??? WTF? Fk her dude, she should have died in that hummingbird suit.

I LOVE that the writers understood how an EMP works. Basically a pulse of atmospheric voltage that causes anything grounded to get a massive power surge.
If it isn't grounded, the whole device follows the surge, so no voltage difference is present. IE no current. IE no boom.
Couldn't say the same for Pacific Rim "It's analog, sir. Nuclear. It's immune to the EMP". hahahaha
Very good detail to pick up on! I feel the same way when writers of military movies/tv shows actually get things right about guns, grenades, etc. instead of just "lol the good guy can dodge all the bullets" 😂
One of my favorite head canons I've seen is idea of Varick just being like "Wanna see my latest invention?! Zhu Li, do the thing!" And her just walking in with their newborn in her arms.

Korra saying, "I couldn't stop Kuvira from taking Zao Fu. I'm not letting her conquer Republic City" makes me think of Aang in Book 1 Siege of the North pt. 1 when he says, "I wasn't there when the fire nation attacked my people. I'm gonna make a difference this time."
Both of them bearing the weight of colossal failures on their shoulders and taking up the mantle of their second chance. They're so amazing.

Korras water bending is so underrated. She bent a river at kuviras mech which takes alot of energy and that mech is like 25 stories tall. If she did that in the avatar state. She would have flooded Republic city and it is easily the best water bending feat in the franchise!!

Korra needed the Avatar State to do an equally impressive airbending feat and when you consider how good her airbending has gotten since the start it really puts it into perspective.

What I love at @15:15 is that she bends multiple elements at a time without the avatar state. She flies while bending boulders. So awesome. Don’t think we see that often in the Avatar series of the avatar bending multiple elements at a time like that without the avatar state.
The amazing thing about Korras bending in this battle is that she isn't even close to being in top form. She spent 3 years in recovery but hasn't had time to properly train or exercise before all of this. Korra here is maybe at half or maybe three quarters her true strength. Just imagine her in her late 20's or 30's. This woman is a true powerhouse.
Guys, I've just notice what may be the reason Korra didn't stay in Avatar State for the whole fight. Because she almost die in Avatar State when fighting Zaheer, so now she is more cautious about it.
Also, i like how in those finale we can see the power of bending, since Book1 some people like to say that the bending is weaker in tlok bla bla bla but dude, if they go full power they would destroy the city as we can see now.
Plus, just look how Korra face expression change when she saw Hiroshi sacrifice. If she wasn't pissed before...now she is for sure. And i guess we know why
what I like about this episode especially, is with all these Earthbenders together, and how much their bending is highlighted because they're bringing their A game, we really get to see the differences in how they bend. They all have very distinct bending styles that are different from eachother, and that's something I've always liked about LoK. Bolin's style is different than Korra's, even Su & Lin have different styles despite both being raised by Toph, etc. I think it's a cool detail.
Exactly. In ep 1 Korra was almost arrested for property damage when she simply thought she was doing her job. The bending isn’t weaker it’s just bending the amount necessary. And it always mind boggled me when people complained about the bending because whatever they say it’s the style (yet they bring up probending in which bending was more simplified on purpose strategically for the game) or they’re talking about the sheer power of the benders , the show shows otherwise. Like Korra and the others are gonna go for more sheer power in this ep because they’re literally battling a giant mech. In close quarters they’re not gonna go absolutely Willy nilly with the bending and (of course) focus on more closed-quartered tactics. We can see that in this episode and the next.

Korra's relationship with the Avatar State since the start has been interesting. In book 1 Korra doesn't make a strong enough spiritual connection to enter the Avatar State until the very end of the season, in book 2 for the first half Korra goes into it for everything from winning a race to almost every fight, in book 3 Korra seems to respect the power more and doesn't enter the State until Zaheer forces her and she tried to resist it. Now in the first half of book 4 the image of herself in the Avatar State was like a visual representation of the trauma, but now that she's faced Zaheer, reentered the Spirit World, and regained her connection to Raava she's back to being able to use it at will, but exercises restraint when needed.
Very good detail to notice. I didn't pick up on her change in attitude when Hiroshi died, but it makes sense now why she was much more motivated to finish the fight after that. Also, while I'm sure probably just average benders of each respective element can't level a city, as we see here MASTER benders in their prime that have learned all techniques and tactics of their respective element can easily level a continent or more.
Kenny how can you doubt Korra's power in this episode?? She's fucking powerful and she does it without the avatar state, imagine the power when she actually uses it.

It’s sad to see Mr. Sato go the way he did. Even after mending the bond between him and Asami, his time with her again was cut short too soon. At least he was able to do some good before he met his tragic end.

the thing about korra’s avatar state is that it’s just her (and raava) for the first time since avatar wan. and she’s still extremely powerfull. you can see that it doesn’t work as a way to improve long term habilities during a fight as it used to be (like all avatar’s past lifes fighting as one in a single body), it’s a boost she uses to intensify her moves BY HERSELF. korra is just so powerfull… i love her.
Actually, her Avatar State is MORE powerful than anyone else. Wan bonded with Raava at her weakest, while Korra bonded with Raava at her strongest. So while Korra only has her own skills to draw on, she actually has more raw power in the Avatar State than any Avatar in history.
That last shot of Korra's pure determination never fails to give me chills
Same, she is PISSED OFF ever since Hiroshi sacrificed himself. Look at her expressions after that moment. I would be extra pissed too if I were Korra. Poor Asami :(
Love how this episode solidifies how broken a bender Korra really is even without the Avatar State. She could've easily mowed down all of her antagonists had she not needed to go through character development.
Yea with how dangerous bending is, the avatar franchise could easily choose to go the Invincible route and add gore. Imagine seeing bending with gore, man avatar would easily become the top franchise.
She became much stronger since she is now connected to her spiritual side. As her masters said at the very beginning of "The Legend of Korra" she excelled in the physical side of bending, while completely ignoring the spiritual side. Now she fully developed that side too. She is a fully developed avatar now.
Normally, I’m not a fan of the sacrifice arc for redemption. I find it to be lazy writing, since the writers don’t want to make the character right their wrongs. Here, I would give it a pass, since we had scenes of him trying to right his wrongs to Asami and she reconciled with him.
Also, i mean, the show made clear that Sato wouldn't be forgiven for his deeds regardless of what he did to help out. He'd be thrown back in jail if he didn't die and he still remains a season 1 villain. It's the same with Zaheer. Helping the protagonist out of your own interest doesn't automatically make you a good person.
I'll side with Mathies. Most antagonists usually go too far to be forgiven so sacrifices can work. While not all antagonists are too far gone to at least atone for their mistakes, some have done too atrocious of things to be forgiven or good people. It even goes too far to be given a second chance.
@@mathies3598 Yeah. After all that Hirioshi did, there was no way he'd get out of prison and Lin even said they'd lock him back up if the prison stands.
Maybe the varrick and zhu li moment is an allusion towards Kenny and Montana future???
Just look at how powerful Korra‘s bending is WITHOUT the avatar state… That was the biggest feat of waterbending we‘ve seen so fae and also her airbending blast was as powerful as the blast of all other airbenders combined, and there are two masters and like 10 pro airbenders… she‘s sooooo powerful😍😍😍

The attention to detail in this episode is really cool. I personally like how the platinum didn't melt from the lava since the melting point of platinum is about 3215 degrees F and lava only really gets up to 2280 degrees F.

The creators of the show are truly master tearbenders
The avatar state is just Ravva's light spirt energy power plus the knowledge from the previous avatars. Korra has the most powerful avatar state now since harmonic convergence. When Wan became avatar, Ravva was very weak and tiny, but when Korra re-fused with Ravva after Vatuu was destroyed Ravva was huge and more powerful. Korra just doesn't have the knowledge/techniques of all the previous avatars.
I absolutely loved that she questioned the physical strength to bending strength ratio! That is something I’ve never thought of and it now has made me want to look into it more! Huge fan of the avatar series overall! Great job!
I really liked how Varrick proposed to Zhu Li. After what happened in the previous episode, this was a redeeming factor for these two.

I know most people don't feel very attached to Hiroshi and his sacrify but I always shed a tear at the "goodbye Asami, I love you" 💔
One thing I just notice with the second watch with you guys is that the more she shifted from her og goal, the more she made her enemies UNITE; she united Varrick and Zhu'li, taking them apart made Varrick miss her and realize their feelings for each other. It united the Beifong family, everyone, including Toph, Lin and Bataar, and they dealt with the grudges they felt. It reunited Bolin with Mako and Opal, making their relationships stronger. Reunited Asami with her father, a man who once tried to kill her daughter ended up sacrificing himself for her and his city. It reunited Korra with herself and her friends after all the internal damage and trauma. It reunited Wu with his people, going from a brat that only cares about himself to one that saves his people in his unique and extravagant way. It made Jinora, Ikki and Meelo's connection as siblings stronger during their journey to find Korra as well as their unique fighting skills against the mecha. They all fought united against the great unitor
I'm almost not ready to see this come to an end, but I'm also happy to see what you have lined up next. Though I'm also happy you'll have a chance to check out the comics as well.

Also, if i recall correctly, this is the river she used to create a wall of ice in the first episode of season 1 to escape de cops. It's a nice call back to the begining of the show, showing how Korra changed.

7:50 Kuvira doesn’t want Republic City, she wants the state. Republic State is one of the biggest states on the continent, as you can see on Kuvira’s map
Fun fact: platinum isn't that hard of a metal. It's good against metalbending (apparently), but it's relatively soft. So throwing a building on it definitely should have done some damage.

The ring Varrick gives Zhu Li is an Earth Kingdom style ring (Zhu Li's mother was from the Earth Kingdom) in a southern Water Tribe box (Varrick is from the southern Water Tribe), so clearly his proposal was not a spur of the moment decision. He couldn't have gotten the ring and box after Zhu Li came back cause there wasn't time before Kuvira arrived, and he wouldn't have gotten them before she came back when he thought she had betrayed them, meaning he had to have had the ring and box for awhile and was planning to propose, but just hadn't yet. So cute! 🥰💙

My main complaint about the platinum exception to metal bending is that Kuvira's robot alone (never mind all the other platinum suits and robots) represents more platinum than is estimated to exist on the entire planet Earth. So on the avatar's world it must be as common as iron is here, which leads to other questions about the nature on that world, but... it's a cartoon, no need to overthink.
