  • In the shadow of the superpower next door, Taiwan stands at the epicenter of a brewing geopolitical storm. As tensions surge, local musicians are amplifying calls for independence, national identity, and resistance to both internal and external authoritarianism. But with the lucrative allure of the Chinese mainland's fanbase swaying some artists, a sharp divide has emerged in the music scene. Can the artists calling for an independent Taiwan get their voices heard above the growing cacophony of noise? #sponsored

Wow. Thank you Vice for covering this. I'm 51 and the fact that I had no ideal Taiwan had hip hop artists and other rock artists standing up for democracy is so ecstatic to me. I love art and all artists who believe in fighting against dictatorship it brings tears to my eyes because the world 🌎 is evolving and continue to challenge those who want to put fear into people for their own political gains. Hats off to the artists of Taiwan and everywhere who are willing to fight against the evils of dictatorship. I stand with you.

I am from Taiwan and I can tell you this is nothing more than propaganda. Taiwan is not even the name of our country. It's the Republic of China. If you actually ask the people of Taiwan what they think Taiwan is, you will hear the following responses:
      1. We ARE China
      2. Not part of China
      3. Part of China but not the PRC (mainland)
      4. Part of Japan
      5. Part of the USA
This has NOTHING to do with democracy. Us Taiwanese are just confused AF.

Thank you VICE for interviewing Taiwanese artists🫶 I’m proud of my country even though it is not perfect. But, the biggest difference between China and Taiwan is that we concern about our value and essence of the freedom, democracy, and equality.
You can make much money from China, but it’s a huge trap and you cannot win over the communist party because they don’t have any sense of integrity from the past, present, and future. Trust me, they’ll never ever change unless the CCP will be overthrown at some point.

The most amazing thing about this documentary is realizing Freddy Lim is already 50, but still barely looks 35.
In all seriousness, I was here for the Sunflower movement, and the DPP surge after the Hong Kong protests. I see China's attempt to influence and threaten Taiwanese politics and society on a daily basis. The biggest challenge will be to convince the Taiwanese public that their freedoms are worth infinitely more than any promised stability coming from China. Like Russia to Ukraine, China in its current form will always be a threat to Taiwan.
As a general message to all Taiwanese, please do not vote against your future in the upcoming elections and never take your freedoms for granted. Taiwan is an amazing example of how a country can evolve into a thriving democracy while being surrounded by countless influences trying to tear it down.

Kissinger was the one who flew to Beijing on 1971 July 10th and made the deal with the communist Chinese that led to the eventual ousting of the ROC from the UN. UN stated because of resolution 2578, the matter of the ROC is a matter of "representation" and not "membership" since there can only be one China. The ROC lost our representation because of the USA's trip to communist China so you might want to re-educate yourself on the facts.

@@abcdedfg8340 Didn't you just say "you will only ask me what is the policy of the PRC?" Now it's "how the PRC treats politicians?" "leaning away from not wanting to be called China?"
That is precisely the difference between someone as uninformed as you and someone who actually knows "Taiwan."
I don't "wonder" like you and the other Taiwanese who are clueless . I actually "know." I have a question for you. Do you read? Have you read any historical documents related to China, Taiwan, and the US?
In case you haven't read, I have already said Kissinger was the one who flew to Beijing on 1971 July 10th and made the deal with the communist Chinese that led to the eventual ousting of the ROC from the UN. UN stated because of resolution 2578, the matter of the ROC is a matter of "representation" and not "membership" since there can only be "one China." The ROC lost our representation because of the USA's trip to communist China.
When Kissinger went to Beijing and spoke to Zhou En Lai about normalizing their relationship, the first thing Zhou asked Kissinger was to "recognize Taiwan is an inseparable part of China." Kissinger hemmed and hawed and tried his hardest to not reply to Zhou's question on Taiwan, but he eventually conceded.
When Zhou asked how Kissinger would be able to get this deal worked out at the UN, Kissinger told Zhou how the US would manipulate the UNSC vote in order to allow the PRC to replace the ROC at the UN. The matter of Taiwan/mainland is not a membership issue but a representation issue therefore as long as the PRC holds the UN seat for China, Taiwan is fucked thanks to the US.
Therefore, if Taiwan has an issue with the PRC asking what was done by the USA 50 years ago and is agreed under UN and all of its members' recognition, then Taiwan needs to take it up to the US and NOT the PRC. The PRC did not go to the US 50 years ago and ask for the annexation of the ROC. The US did.
So until you stop whining and realize the facts and deal with the actual source of the problem, stop spreading misinformation and brainwashing those who are uninformed like you.
Back to your ridiculous question: " how the prc treats politicians or taiwan/roc when it seems to be leaning away from not wanting to be called china? Just wondering."
Answer: As per UN resolution 2578, it says "to restore all its rights to the PRC of China and to recognize the representatives of its government as the only representative of China to the UN and to expelforthwith the representatives of CKS from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the UN."
As far as 2578 is concerned, the ROC ceased to be a "legal representative of China" since Oct 25th 1971.
The ROC became a de facto government instead of a de jure "Chinese" government on that very day thanks to the USA. Does it mean the ROC stopped being China? NO. Whose fault is it? NOT the PRC. It was the US who planned this whole thing. So I don't understand why you keep bitching about what the PRC is doing. They are literally exercising their rights given to them by the USA.
Why is the PRC adamant and insist Taiwan "must" unify with China? Because literally the US made a deal 50 years ago with the Communist Chinese. The US didn't simply just want to "be friends" with the PRC for nothing. Nixon was the one who made it happened and he said it very clearly it was a decision solely based on US "interests" because he does not believe the PRC's communism system align with America's ideology. In exchange, the US was able to use the normalization with the PRC to their advantage. In the 1980s, the CIA asked to setup "Spy towers" along the USSR/PRC border to spy on USSR's nuclear program. The US also benefitted massively from the PRC's cheap labour therefore cheap Chinese goods for decades. You think the PRC would allow the US to be the only beneficiary of this "deal"?
If you are from Taiwan like me, then you need to get off your moral high horse because of your ignorance. Start learning the actual facts these politicians either don't know themselves or don't want you to know. The issue of Taiwan for the US is simply a business transaction just like what they did with the PRC. Everything is about "US interests."

No logic exists for separation of Taiwan from mainland China. Till 1894 it was part of Imperial China. Then it had to be ceded to Japan because of China's defeat in Sino-Japanese war and continued like that for next 50 yrs. In 1945 Japan was defeated in WWII and Taiwan reverted to China under rule of Chiang Kai Shek. Thus the pre 1894 status was restored. In 1949 Chiang himself was defeated by Communist forces and found recluse in Taiwan. This was a purely civil war therefore the legal status can not be changed by who occupies which part of the parent country. It is a matter to be settled by peace treaty or by war which will be deemed as continuation of the Civil War. No scope for any foreign interference exists. But the US and Western media have created the fiction of Taiwan's right to self determination and demand permanent renunciation of right to use force by China. These people can make an elephant out of a donkey.

Taiwan has been on the opposing end of the political spectrum with China for the past 400 years. Taiwanese were already fighting the Chinese (ruled by Manchu invaders ) when the American forefathers first arrived in America. Some of Taiwan's oldest cities Tainan (Fort Zeelandia) and Tamsui (Fort San Domingo) were built by Dutch, Spaniards respectively. Taiwan is also home to 16 aboriginal tribes. So the Taiwanese would be fighting the Chinese regardless of American involvement since historically, culturally, genetically Taiwanese do not share the same past as China.
