I love the quiet, humble strength and dignity Lancaster brings to the character of Bob Valdez.

Wonderful film. I've watched it many times. Barton Heyman's "El Secundo" was a truly memorable character.

This movie has always been one of my favorites. I have no idea how many times I have watched it. It was instrumental in my building myself a .50/70 Government on a single shot rifle action. I made two of them, and gave one to my grand son for his birthday several years ago. Loading it with modern powder, and a 554 grain lead bullet, allows me to load the full spectrum .50/56 to .50/140Sharps. I do not recommend shooting the .50/140 load unless you have a desire for extreme pain. I did it ONCE to proof the rifle and action. It hurts.
When Tom Selleck made the Quigley Down Under movie I, again, had to have one. I bought a D. Pedersoli Quigley .45/70 Government. Modern powders allow the same loading options, 525 grain cast bullet, .45/70 to .45/120 Sharps. The original rifles were load designated due to the case volume.
Either one of my rifles will make the shots the actors shot in their movies. The .45/70 Government was famous for 1,000 yard accuracy. It was actually tested at the Army test center at Sandy Hook around 1873 where it fired a bullet 3,500 yards. That was the year the .45/70 Government cartridge replaced the .50/70 Government round as the issue cartridge for the US Armed forces. Quite a feat for the ballistics technology of the time. That shot was recorded and verified by the US Army ordinance board.
Old guns are great to play with.

Gotta love that classic Lancaster pose at 0.12. He stops, legs out, his arm extended out and down, fingers out.

This movie has always been one of my favorite Westerns. I wish someone could post the scene at the end where El Segundo (Barton Heyman) comes to a grudging respect for Valdez, and refuses to do Tanner's bidding in killing him.

Nothing defines this movie more for me than when one of Valdez's enemies asks him when was he an Indian fighter, and Valdez answers, "Before I knew better."

This was an epic that should live in everybody´s memory. One of the greatest. Period. Too bad Burt Lancaster is no longer alive to read this comment. I hope he can from way above.

Great movie. Gritty, hard hitting, probably very close to what the old west was like.
The guy Valdez grabbed and stuck on the horse looks a lot like a guy who played in "Lawman" with Burt.

This was a good film. They simply do not make stuff like this now. Apache. Ulzana’s Raid. The Professionals. The Kentuckian. Burt made great movies. From Here to Eternity. Great stuff!

I would add Atlantic City, Go Tell the Spartans, The Rainmaker, Elmer Gantry, The Scalphunters,The Swimmer,Castle Keep, The Gunfight at OK Corral, The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Crimson Pirate, His Majesty O'Keefe,The Sweet Smell of Success,The Train,Brute Force, The Rose Tattoo, Come Back Little Sheba,Lawman, Valdez is Coming, and a little movie titled From Here to Eternity. But outside of these I really can't think of anything worthwhile Lancaster ever did on screen.

Burt Lancaster.Nobody had the screen charisma he had. He moved like a cat across the screen. He was a very talented actor with a wide of roles range . No doubt he was one of the best. This was a more than decent movie.
