I have switched all my clothing to Cotten…linen…silk…wool…leather…no faux or polyester
Sometimes you have to buy nicer buttons for blazers and suit jackets, getting something metallic or pearl finish looks so much better and it doesn't cost that much.

Hi Deirdre, Another excellent informative chat. Regarding buttons my mum used to often buy prettier nicer buttons and change them on her cardigan's, shirt's and coats etc it really did make a lot of difference for such little cost. I have occasionally used the same trick and it's been very successful 🙂
I think makeup is every bit as important as clothing choice. I have learned to step back and take a look at my face’s “over all” effect-no raccoon eyes, no overly dark liner or brows, no white circles under the eyes from poorly blended concealer, etc. 😏I can’t look young again, or make the wrinkles or sags go away, but I can be sure my makeup looks classy.

Fashion tape solves that gap in the button up shirt.
Designers and brands work hard to come up with and promote phony “trends” in ways that they can use dirt-cheap materials. This season’s trends are a good example: lace, sheers, mesh, etc., are all deliberately promoted to use these cheap material, polyester, they’re made of. The only reason synthetics are ever used is to reduce their production costs and increase their profits astronomically. We don’t need them, ever.

Agreed, a few years ago I bought a couple of lovely fine cotton print blouses from H&M now all the blouses if you got near a naked flame would ignite - it’s polyester or polyester or polyester 😮
Deirdre I have changed buttons on different outfits. It makes them look classy and can change the look so much that others won’t even recognize them. It’s getting easier and easier to copy expensive pieces of clothing. Nothing looks worse than wearing a pair of heels where the leather has been stripped from the heels. You need to put new taps on your heels and have the heels repaired to keep them . looking classy. Love you lots

Tailor's are commonly used without question across the pond....in America it's a rarity they buy cheap off the rail!!! Plus high end stores used to offer alterations but no more....
Agree with your tips… especially regarding how clothing fits. Too tight looks cheap, too big looks sloppy. Always keep a portable steamer handy too. I do enjoy a neon green v neck t-shirt with white shorts in the summer oh lol! Have fun w fashion too.

Thank you for the tips, I will use them when I’m shopping for clothes. I admit on occasions that I have dressed cheap, but that’s only because I am on a budget but always make sure I am dressed neat and tidy. I prefer to shop at a more discount store but still choose clothes that are modern and fashionable. You don’t need to spend a million bucks to look a million bucks.

I have tried many ways of cleaning the rubber buffer part of my trainers. The best I've come up with is "sticky stuff remover", available in hobby/craft shops. Its a bit oily though so I wipe with a dry cloth or paper towel afterwards.
The Magic Eraser sponge does a good job.
I smiled when you told us about your Dad. My Dad was also military and shone his shoes everyday. I find myself doing the same thing and I'm sure he's leaning over me, saying, "Well done G T." Thanks for the great video.

Excellent tips! I use an inexpensive vegetable brushfire cleaning suede shoes, and so ft toothbrush. And always us a protective spray on them, and your handbag.

Excellent video. If you look around you can see how many people look just slobby. It particularly applies to shoes. I work at school and this video should be shown to young people, and teachers, surprise surprise how to look presentable.

I had an education professor whose remark I have always remembered and followed during my 36 year career as an educator. She stated, "If you want to be treated with respect as a professional, you must dress like a professional."
She was not referring to cargo pants, a graphic T-shirt, and sneakers like I have seen many teachers wear (unfortunately).
Over the years, I received many compliments on my attire. I was given many opportunities to represent my school(s) in the district and the community based on the professionalism of my attire and behavior. Retirement is wonderful, but I still choose to look relevant and presentable when I go out in public.

i dont wear a lot of rings, bracelets, necklaces together...also i always have well fiting underwear .thanks so much for this really great video.....
I don’t wear any synthetic fibers or other plastics at all, even in blends. Once I developed skin allergies to them and began overheating in mid-life, they were just out of the question. My natural-fiber clothes and genuine leather accessories look much more elegant. Yes, they are more expensive, but worth it, if for the comfort if nothing else. I also hate Spandex, I hate being squeezed in anything. Knits are inherently stretchy, they don’t even need it.
Yes, I think natural fabrics always look better than synthetics and I certainly can't wear polyester as it makes me too hot! XX
Really enjoyed this video with all the practical suggestions - perhaps cos I agree with all of them! Especially polishing shoes. No stylish person wears scuffed dirty shoes.
You did not mention nails- an easy way to degrade an outfit is by not having clean short nails.

I agree with you about having a Tailor. I’m 5 “2 and my clothes I take to the cleaners because the lady there is a Great Tailor. She has a little place where you can try it on and then she pins it to you and fixes it. Sometimes it only cost $10 to hem some thing. I have to have everything tailored I don’t mind at all.😊🇺🇸I use the magic erasers on my white tennis shoes, it works great…

@carlsenlifeaftercarl $10 for a hem is a real bargain. I’ve used tailors and noticed if I bring in too mamy more items to adjust after the first visits, prices go up. It seems that the tailors start to think I have a lot of disposable income to spare. [tailoring isn’t diapers, food, or mortgag/rent 🤭].

I can't do without my hand steamer and my tailor. I'm very particular about my clothes being fresh, pressed and fitting well. I have a dress ( great price from QVC) in a black, beige and ivory print that is almost exactly the style of the first medium blue you presented. It is at my tailors being shortened to knee length and taken in on the sides. It will look so nice when finished. I will wear it in warm weather with leg makeup and .offers and when temps drop, black tights with black suede loafers. I also dry clean many items. My clothes seem to last longer with dry cleaning..and the linen pieces come back so perfectly pressed. I watch for sales and never purchase polyester. If I only wear a cotton blouse a few hours, it goes to the " to be steamed area" so it's all perfect when I'm ready to dress. I went " out of my box" recently and bought a somewhat bohemian brightly multi colored patterned blouse from Talbots.
Can't wait to wear it but it's too interesting for an everyday top. Always love your videos Deidre.

Spending a lot of money isn’t the cure for appearing cheap. Dolly Parten once remarked it cost her a lot of money to look this cheap. I find that classic pieces are longer lasting and give me more bang for my buck.

I wouldn’t be surprised if scuffed, dirty shoes become all the rage at some point in the future. Like ripped, distressed denim is acceptable and fashionable now, and has been for a long time.
I mean -tragically- (bc of the Rigged 2020 Election {in America}, we-ARE well on our way to becoming a 3rd world country....where dirty nasty old sneakers would be all that we had.

I never understood why women wear white or light bras under dark knits, do they never look in a mirror? Or vice-versa. A black bra is essential, as are some nude ones. I never bother buying a bra that isn’t a seamless, t-shirt bra. Lace, seams, etc., are always going to show through. Yes, lace, sexy bras can be pretty in a drawer, but they’re not meant to be seen, so that isn’t in the least important.

I agree with all of these, and I do follow them all. However, I struggle with tops. Having large breasts makes it a challenge. I wear a medium top, but often they are too tight in the bust. If I go up to a large, they fit my bust, but are way too big everywhere else. 🤦🏻♀️

My trick is to buy to fit my largest part, then have the rest taken in. I need to do this with nearly every top or dress I buy. It can get expensive but it makes a huge difference in how I look and feel.

You forgot to say… don’t over do the makeup! There is nothing worse to see a woman nicely dressed, and her makeup is caked on her face. Some women use the wrong highlighter and they look like pandas, or there blusher is in the wrong place.
Please forgive me for sounding uppity but recently my daughters and i sat in a shopping center we seldom go to. We were shocked at the way most people looked. Most people there looked totally sloppy. We weren't trying to be judgemental. But ill fitting clothing, dirty shoes. Etc. I certainly hope this is not the style of the future. Even cheap clothes that are clean, wrinkle free and well fitted can make such a difference.
…and, of course, wearing very tight yoga pants when you are not doing yoga…seeing every lump and bump-front and back…is terribly cheap.
The obvious case that money can't buy class is Meghan Markle. She is wearing expensive beige clothes but they are not fit, ironed nor she knows anything about underwear. Too bad she doesn't follow your channel, she could find out that she broke all 8 rules you mentioned!
