- Profile of Edith Massey from 1978. John Waters met Massey while she was working at Pete's Hotel and offered her a role as herself in the film Multiple Maniacs. In the early '70s, she quit her job at Pete's and opened a thrift store called Edith's Shopping Bag.
I love her. She was the sweetest person ever. She should get many awards for her talented and funny works. Wouldn't it be nice is we all had one person like her to talk to us when we are down?
Edith is my moral compass.
@@richardm123uk I just love that. Kinda deep, really.
When you were at the lowest you've ever been, she would be there for you and say: "Well, you should get out more, then, honey, and forget your silly nilly problems!"
I love Edith Massey!!!
@@rodhatte”GODDAMN THESE DESIGNERS!”😂
A very talanted woman. Her voice, her manners, her appearance are absolutely unique which makes her a bright and memorable actress and comedian. Her 100th birthday was this year. R.I.P.
but she died at age 66 due to the complications of diabetes and lymphoma. Dead is dead.
@@TomokoAbe_okay it was the 100th anniversary of her birth. Does that make it better for you, Mr. Sunshine?
Unfortunately, she didn't live to celebrate this age, not even Divine, who passed away at the age of 43.
I bought a cigarette case from her store years ago. She was so sweet and absolutely a doll!
How did you buy it if she died almost 40 years ago?😅
Must have bought it 41 years ago
Wow
I would have loved 😍 to meet her in person 😮
I love her as "Cuddles" in "Polyester;" I think it's her best role. Miss her and that whole crazy era.
Agree.
She’s the secret weapon of John Waters’ films. Those movies wouldn’t be half as memorable without her.
John Waters was intended to film the sequel to "Pink Flamingos", which was known as "Flamingos Forever". However, Edith Massey's death, along with Divine shifting his attention to serious male roles, nixed any chance of filming the sequel.
She was
@@alexandrosmartinez508 sequels are almost always lame. maybe it's for the best it didn't work out
Imagine what stuff they had a in a thrift shop in 1978....some stuff from the 20s,30s, a lot from the 40's and covered with 50s things.
Filmdude0 Is it still there in Fell's Point?
I couldn't beleive "Itching powder" was legal still in 1978...how cruel.
@@scottleft3672 You can still buy it.
I mean their stuff from 30s is our stuff from 80s, it’s totally crazy to think about
Oh what a lovely person, John Waters' tribute to her was very touching saying she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. You could see that from the way she loved her cats and they loved her. What a sweet soul - I'm so glad John Waters happened to discover her and make her a star. How I would have LOVED to have visited her fabulous thrift store, what fun! RIP dear lady. X
She died at the age of 66, if she were alive today she would be 105 years old, perhaps weakened by age
I used to drive Edie to gay bars in Hollywood in the early 80’s. She was so sweet and the boys loved her. She wore a tinsel coat. She was so much fun.
@@lorribaker2734 Wow, what wonderful memories. I am VERY envious!
I met Edith once and we talked about her movie career. She told me that those scenes in the trailer were pure torture. she froze to death, temps. in the 20's Nicest lady to talk to. Loved her right from the start.
By the time Waters cast Massey as a threatening character in 1977's "Desperate Living," it was simply too late. Those of us who had been weened on Maniacs and Flamingos knew the inherent, accepting goodness that was within Massey could never disguised by a mean character. Waters himself said Edie was welcoming of every type of offbeat human oddity except cruelty. I can believe it.
The Chickens in ‘Pink Flamingos’ were CLEARLY being harmed .
Not necessarily Edie’s fault , but she could have refused to participate .
Woww, she reminds me so much of typical 70s-80s french quarter characters. Bizarre, but totally genuine and hospitable.
wow have never seen Edie this way before, as herself! But who wouldn't have guessed that she was an angel.
John Walters is my hero He made Edith Massey the QUEEN!
Waters. John Waters.
@@joeshowallme maybe he meant "Barbara Walters".....that would make more sense....
I love John Waters. I can't say what an influence he's been on my life. Hello from Omaha!!
Why she never got awards bothers me. Even though she wasn't in much, she was so underrated!!! RIP Edith. I so would have shopped at her store. Who wouldnt 🌹
Woohoo! Not only Edith, but Edith with Tiger! This is the only time I have seen video of Tiger.
There was some confusion, but John has graciously allowed me to re-post it.
she was a lovely human being - RIP
Baltimore, sadly, has changed so much since these days....
I feel honored to have the same last name
What she would care most about is if you are kind to ALL animals.
Me too. I'm hoping to take an Ancestory.com thing just to see if I have any of her in my family tree. I'm from Washington and she's from Maryland but hey.
Her real last name isn't Massey
Love Edith. She's always my favorite character in any of John's movies I'm watching. And it's true what John (as well as others) have said about Edie, she was an absolute sweetheart. I really didn't know that she was as old as she was when she died. I just wish I could have met her before we lost her.
PS. ---- John was rather sexy when he was younger! lol
Went out to see her punk rock act in Philadelphia just for kicks. That was way back in the late 70's and I've not though too much about Edith until CZcams where you can find just about anything. It's so cool to see her out of character. She's such a charming woman. Wish I had the opportunity to visit her thrift shop during time when this video was made. Anyone who is a friend to animals is a friend of mine. RIP Edith.
I loved her in "Polyester", the contrasting of her character to Francine's ongoing problems. To me that was hilarious, especially since I had never seen a film like this in my life.
Edith, You Are GREAT,FUNNY, AWESOME!!! I'm 64years Young And Remember You As The Egg Lady. God Bless You Your The Best.THANK YOU For All Your Pictures.
I wish someone could've found a way to keep her store open. This should've been a historic site. I would travel to Maryland just to shop in this store. I wonder what year did it close.
Same
I saw here so many years ago! She had a smell about her, not unpleasant. Queen of her ball. Loved her. RIP! I was in high school. I had made a pilgrimage to the area. Bus and hitchhiking. It was an amazing thing. I remember fun, laughing and drinks.
John Waters is young as hell here.
she was so lovable.
I loved her in Polyester. LOL. She was so funny.
Damn these designers
This was wonderful!Thank you for posting! This video and finding out that Multiple Maniacs is soon to get a proper dvd/blu-ray release have made a boring Sunday magical!😊
She’s one of my most cherished movie characters. She’s just all around a lovely lady.
Thanks for this awesome piece on Edith! I honor you, Queen Carlotta!
Thanks for posting this historical, hysterical interview!
wished I had got to meet her she always cracked me up on every movie she did RIP Edith Massey...
What a adorable Lady!! I wish I have a "time machine" and go to the 70s definitely
That counter with that great cat. I shopped there in th 80's , Edith & Jean were sweet to me, I still have the slides I shot there. Fells point became gentrified, when I went flea marketing there in the 1970's and 80's on a Sunday I can still see it, you had to step over drunk sailors passed out cold on the curb. All gone now.
WOW! I really like her. I've never seen her do anything but the movies and she was a very bright and kind woman. Bless her heart.
If more people were like Edith, the world would be a much better place. 😊
I would have loved to meet her. She seemed so sweet, charming and talented.
LOVE Edie... what a sweet lady... I wish I could have known her.
I hope Edith is getting all the eggs she wants in heaven!
Thank you so much for posting this....I just love Edith! Wish I could have met her but she'd already passed away before I 'discovered' her. To imagine you could just go up to her store and meet her. Just fabulous!
we miss u honey
ur our guardian angel.....
Love that voice and laugh.
Will always love her.
I love Edith. She was very sweet. John Waters was cute back in the day!
I'd have loved to hang around Miss Edie, and swapped stories over boiler makers and beer nuts.
Oh Francine!! You're the drunkeness person I've ever seen.
She wos a wonderfull 'sweet woman , And life is more empty with out her xxx
Genius stuff!!! Love Edie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
People like Edie should have run America.
I didn't know there was footage of her thrift store. I've always wanted to see what her store looked like! :) I love Edith Massey! I wish I could of met her.
I love that Waters finds beauty in the unusual.
I saw pink flamingos and it’s good to know that she’s such a sweet person in real life and down to earth
One of the greatest of actresses. Right up there with Garbo, Crawford and Davis.
What a Sweetheart... She is beyond precious!
Ahh...A fellow cat-lady to boot...Love, love, love...
Oh, i love her in every movie she's in))
We had only HEARD about Edy's Shopping Bag in the John Waters book Shock Value. NOW here it is !! Do you think people were just hanging out there all day long ? 1978 would have been the perfect time to go thrift shopping ! Everything from 1968 and 1958 would have been deemed JUNK !
She’s awesome. Fell in love with her in polyester she’s a trip
She was so funny and she seemed so sweet too.
Wow! And I thought I've seen everything that was filmed by and related to the great John Waters
i'll always remember em
Preach
If there were ever ANYONE in this whole wide world that I'd die to meet, it's EDITH MASSEY! Just seeing her in this video, you can tell that she has God's love written all over her. How I wish I could've met you, sweet Edy!
Baltimore has a lot of love....
She’s such a sweetheart.. I agree with John Waters, she’s a beauty.
Elle était extraordinaire dans Polyester.
What a sweet person she was...
"Edith walks to point A."
😜😝😁👌
wow,that brought back some memories
She was very astute and knew her talent and worth. Gregarious
Edie was do precious!!!
Find Edith Massey on Facebook.
I love her!!
I would have loved to have met her. She reminds me of many types when Ybor City in Tampa was still like a "fringe element" area before "gentrification' set in.
She’s such a doll & extremely entertaining. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
roflmao...she was awesome
Edie is the best!
Young Mr. Waters reminds me SO much of Matthew Grey Gubler
Merveilleuse Édith, I love you so much dear ❤️❤️❤️
