  • The US National Weather Service says nearly one half of the population of the United States is under an active heat warning. The west of the country is experiencing record temperatures - with Las Vegas at almost 49 degrees Celsius this week.
    And it's been a similar story elsewhere in the world, where experts say climate change is causing heat waves to grow more frequent on practically every continent. The World Health Organization has found that extreme temperatures cause more deaths worldwide than any other weather-related factor.
    So with more and more people all over the globe being exposed to sustained heat - we take a closer look at the risks.
    For more on this, we talk to our science correspondent Derrick Williams.

      We must seriously consider species like fungi. At the moment, fungi cannot survive if the host's temperature is over 94 degrees. And for a long time, there have been no reasons for fungi to evolve to be able to withstand higher temperatures. Well, now there is reason to evolve. If they evolve to withstand higher temperatures, any one of them could be capable of burrowing in our brains and taking control, not of millions of us but billions of us; puppets with poisoned minds, permanently fixed on one unifying goal, to spread the infection to every last human alive by any means necessary. And there are no treatments for this, no preventatives, no cures, they don’t exist and it’s not even possible to make them. And if that happens, we lose

      Exactly, this is something that has to be considered. Here in the southeast US, where I live we've reached 99°F so far in regular temperature, but that's like 113 (that's not exact, just a rough estimate) in wet bulb temperature. When I went to visit a western state a few years ago it was somewhere around 95-99 the whole time but to me it felt like it was in the 80s because the humidity was so much lower. It's like a rainforest here and that makes a huge difference. If you can't sweat and have it evaporate, you're in trouble.

      Depends on the doctors; in my case (blood cancer) the oncologist and the cardiologist check the weekly tests, adjust dosage and advise on what to do and what not at the peak of the summer. We did quite a few changes when the temperature warmed up in late June - cutting down the least essential meds and minimizing blood pressure intervention.

    • @unicorn-glasses
      @unicorn-glasses Před 18 dny +10

      Exactly, a lot of people don't realize this. It's generally not listed as a side effect. The most important medication I take is an anti-epileptic/mood stabilizer and I literally cannot decrease my dose or I risk becoming manic/psychotic. I can reduce the other 3, but this one absolutely must remain at this dose and it makes me extremely sensitive to heat. I'd rather get heat exhaustion than have a manic episode so I just deal with it the best I can, but not everyone has that luxury. Like people in jails and prisons. That's a huge issue there (at least in the US).
      I hope you make it through this summer with the least amount of suffering possible.

    Wearing linen helps, even cotton is too hot at 40C. We’re well into the second week of a major heat wave where I live. I have to spend all my time in my room with a window AC unit, it’s over 35C in the rest of my house. I haven’t left the house since the heat wave began, I just can’t face getting into my 65C car. It takes at least an hour of driving with the AC on high, and the seat cooler on, to make it comfortable, but my errands are only ten minutes away. So, the car will never cool down to 40C, it’s miserable. I’m thinking of renting a place in a northern, cooler climate for the summers, perhaps Scotland.

I grew up in Texas and had to leave because of the heat (2023 was my hard limit on 100F+ temps), the level of apathy and business as usual as it just keeps getting worse amazes me. I work outside and am of Northern/Western European decent; acclimatization is necessary for both hot and cold weather. If a person is in AC the majority of the time, they will never acclimatize and thus have a far worse reaction in the heat. A person can think of it like training. Additionally, just because you say heat waves are happening all around the world, I am not sure that has been any difference in the last 100 years outside of the cities and heat islands, I think most people just didnt have a choice nor care. I'm irritable when it's hot outside, I can't concentrate, have no appetite, just drink water and go to the bathroom. Last week here in California, it started to reach 78/79F, I can't focus, I felt nausea, had headache when I was between the heat outside and enter cold indoors, especially in the freezing supermarket.
    Most libraries has free filtered water stations, we can fill out our bottle and use the PC or find a table to do some work with free AC. The libraries are the designated cool zones.

    Grew up in AZ, summers of consistent 110°F+ (42° C) heat is so serious and the dangers creep up silently. Keep yourself covered with loose clothes, avoid water in direct sun (UV rays are stronger in water) HYDRATE! Most stand alone Starbucks give out free water, have extra in your car, heat can cause issues with your car in many ways (radiator to battery to electronics) DONT run your AC in high heat for long stretches, alternate between windows down and AC if you must; keep your head and skin wet if you don't have access to AC/water (this helps you sweat less to conserve water) eat foods high in water content if you can, especially fruit. Avoid caffeine, tea and alcohol as they will dehydrate you faster. If temps are above 90° fans will not help cool down the temperature and it has become dangerous for you to remain in, get to someplace with AC, if you can't stay as still as you can in a dark place if possible. Do your errands early morning and late night to avoid the heat, nap between 2-4pm if you can as it's the hottest part of the day and it's hard to sleep in general during the heat. If you have a yard, keep it shaded and set up areas for wildlife to find shade and water; this is important for not just the animals but us, the climate changing impacts them too and we need them. Put boots on your animals feet if you're going outside in temps above 80°F!! The asphalte is always+20° from the air temp and they can get seriously burnt. If it's high heat and high humidity you will be MORE likely to experience heat illness as your body dehydrates rapidly but cannot cool down; drink more fluids and avoid staying in the heat. Please feel free to ask questions on here if you need tips, I genuinely do not want anyone experiencing heat related illnesses. I spent 25 years in the desert and every summer hundreds of people died just because they didn't know how to stay safe during high temperatures. It's tragic but totally avoidable if you're educated about it.

    God, this must be a nightmare for people struggling to stay cool. Sending prayers and healing vibes their way. Everyone deserves access to clean water, a nutritious meal, and shelter. We're not living gods plan if these key needs aren't met across the board. 😔

      @conormcqregor4393 I absolutely do work outside, I've worked in both -40C, and plus 40C, I can tell you +40 is way better, absolutely nothing works in -40, and you need warm up break every 15 minutes, that is if you have somewhere to warm up.

    In Oklahoma we have received a lot of much needed rain for July with some night time temps reaching 67 degrees day time 90 plus Fahrenheit. If also humid that is the big problem vs dry heat without humidity. Born raised Northwest Oklahoma farm boy/man always wears a full rim hat long sleeves so one does not expose your skin. DRINK A LOT OF WATER.
