- Tony Kanaan got to see his favorite car, the 1991 McLaren MP4/6 driven to a world championship by his friend and hero Ayrton Senna, for the first time up close at Sonoma Raceway for the 2023 edition of the Velocity Invitational vintage event, and shares his memories and emotions after viewing the legend's final F1 title-winner.
Filmed by Connor Vandagriff.

1. Last F1 car to win the F1 championship with a manual gearbox
2. The only F1 car to win the F1 championship with a V12 engine
3. Senna’s last F1 championship winning car
Here is a funny story about T. Kanaan and Senna. The later Kart race that he was talking about in 1:11 was organized by Senna in his farm in Tatuí, State of Sao Paulo. There was q qualify for the race, and Tony got the Pole Position, but out of the blue Senna Said: "Let's make this more fun, the race will be done with the inverted positions". So Tony started in the last one. And won the race. Passing everyone, including Senna.
The last manual transmission car and 12 Cyl car to win the world championship. Driven by the greatest of all time. In my opinion the best sounding car of all time.
Define "greatest" and we can talk.
@@ivanjulian2532 Why would I define it for you? You can define it yourself. Greatness is subjective.
If you polled all the drivers from the past four decades who do you think they would win as the consensus best driver?
I'd put the 94 Ferrari V12 as the best sounding engine ever.
@@ElectoneGuy Its a toss up between them imo. The Honda has a more hollow sound and being matched with the manual trans the downshifts sound better.
@@K20EF8 blah blah blah.
I love how Marshall sent the message to ZB to encourage him to let Tony drive that specific car. I cannot imagine how powerful that moment was for TK. His description of Ayrton Senna is priceless. So powerful.
And speaking of just the car. When I think of F1 that is the exact car I see in my head. It is a timeless image!
Man seeing and touching that car would be the highlight of my bucket list. Senna was the GOAT. Back when F1 was a drivers sport.
I was at the Phoenix F1 race in 1991. Senna was so much faster than anyone else thru the chicane.
Both Kanaan and Senna are legends.
Tears come to my eyes….I know the feeling as I bought the NSX that belonged to “Braguinha” and was driven by Senna on several occasions…the day I seated on it first time was a torrent of feelings…..
Really wasn’t that right hand drive?
MP4/6-10
Senna's car for Italy, Portugal and Spain in 1991.
Finished 2nd, 2nd and 5th.
Absolutely beautiful thing. Wonderful moment for a Brazilian driver to drive a Senna car.
Então esse chassi foi o carro daquela foto icônica de Senna com o MP4/6 e Mansell com o fw14 lado a lado.
I’ve heard the story of Senna helping Tony before but it’s still awesome to think somebody got that close to the Legend. Tony was a Pall Bearer tor Senna.
I wonder if Kanaan would have made it to F1 if Senna had lived. He (and Castroneves) certainly had the talent. I wish there were more Brazilian F1 drivers. The grid just seems incomplete without representation from this great racing country.
He was not one of the pallbearers.
I saw Senna driving this car at the portuguese GP 1991❤ the GOAT no matter how many championships others have own or will win.
AYRTON WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST
Tony, as a Brazilian, I couldn’t see anyone better than you to drive this car! Hope you have enjoyed this it, felt what the “chefe” used to feel . I’m sure, Senna would be proud of you as your daddy sure would when you won Indianapolis! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Parabéns! Você merece!
🇧🇷 ❤Senna forever!!
Seeing Tony see that car for the first time.. Gave me chills man.. Incredible moment
Goosebumps and tears....
Two all time favorites. Tony and the car. So cool.
Sennas impact in Motorsports is unmatched and will never be replicated, forever THE greatest!
Dale Earnhardt`s impact was even bigger.
@@patrickanderson9023 only in EUA, i'm a huge Nascar fan and Dale was for me the greatest Nascar driver but Senna is treated as a superior entity wherever I go, his kind a God in Brazil, every men, women, kid knows who was Ayrton and how his mentaly changed a entire Country.
@@patrickanderson9023yes here in the US he was without question, now worldwide no driver beats Senna, dude was bigger than Pele in his own country that in itself is insane.
@@Alo1488 My mother says that on the day Senna died, even the busiest beach was empty, no one could believe it, people felt that a family member had passed away..
@@patrickanderson9023Huh? Dale Earnhardt only had a impact at the US bro...Senna was worldwide...he has statues of him at different countries where ppl leave flowers at to this day.
Meu Deus! O carro mais cobiçado do automobilismo! Parabéns Tony!
This is my favorite racing car as well. Was in Interlagos in 91 watching from the stands and is my favorite sports memory.
Amazing !!!
I just can't find words other than I miss the GOAT 😢
Driving Ayrton car must be a metaphysic experience
Thank you so much Marshall for capturing this amazing moment, seeing Tony’s emotions is great !
Watching and crying at the same time…. Parabéns cara!!! Vc colheu o que semeou a sua vida inteira!
Shout out the cameraman who filmed this! Ditto to the editor.
I would be crying like a baby
Senna The Best! ❤️🇧🇷
Tony deserves to make this dream come true. He is a really a warrior through all his life, and Senna means too much for us, not just a driver, but as an example of how hardwork is important, how look for perfection, how details really do matter. And most of all: an example of real kindness, not the way people do nowadays, mostly to show in social medias, but to give a chance to whom work hard after some achievment.
Unpopular opinion, but I always thought the MP4/6 was prettier than the MP4/4. A beautiful race car.
Not unpopular at all...imo the 1993 one was the prettier one tho
1993 was ruined by max Mosleys decision to reduce the rear tyre width from 18inch to 15inch. Looked ridiculous.
Amazing.🇧🇷
Great post! Thanks to MP, TK, and RIP Ayrton!
THE greatest F1 car of all time.
Only a few come even close, not trying to take away anything from modern cars and drivers but those cars were different (powerful and raw) and demanded real drivers at the wheel, todays cars are more tame and easy to drive.
much love to tony
SENNA ERA FORA DO COMUM O MELHOR PILOTO QUE JÁ EXISTIU SUA VELOCIDADE ERA UMA FORÇA DA NATUREZA 👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
MP and Tony, thanks for sharing this moment with us. Now it's off to watch the in-car footage!
Momento único! Momento Top! Show! Parabéns!!! Sou fã de automobilismo, acompanhei Ayrton Senna na época, tive a oportunidade de assistir a corrida ao vivo! Emocionante! Parabéns Tony k.!!! Deus Abençoe!!!
Wow, thank you so much for this Video. For us in Brasil Senna was and will be always the best racer driver ever. It's exciting to see TK with the Chief's car (as we affectionately call Senna here).
Ah, TK, you are a true gentleman.
Belíssima homenagem!
MP you are awesome! Thank you for doing these McLaren videos!!!
I agree, it was Senna’s obsession that made him the greatest of his time.
…..and Tony I followed your career since you began in Europe, Italy with F Abarth……
Driving those cars were physically so hard. Today they cruise around almost on auto pilot. In those days the skills on how to use the clutch the pedals, gear shifters and the car control of these extremely powerfull and unstable cars is what set them apart a the best era of drivers.
Kaanan and Castroneves are Brazil's greatest drivers since Senna.
Senna was a complex human bean. A complex driver. Amazing car, amazing years...
Esse carro é icônico! 🇧🇷
Tony, putaquilparil, parabens, voce merece. sua carreira é fantastica, e vc parece ser um cara sensacional. congrats
How can you not love TK?
Parabéns Tony!!! Fico feliz em vê-lo realizando um sonho
Pedal to medal Tony!! Make it scream hahaha
Love love love!!! This made my day!
What a truly fantastic interview. Thank you for sharing this with us. I can't wait to see, and hear, that car run again.
Amazing Tony!
Tony no carro do chefe! É maravilhoso....bora Brasil?!
Que video, parabens pelo momento! Sensacional!!
Love this!
Pisa fundo Tony !!!
👍😎👍
wow, wonderful. this was so awesome to watch
Obrigado por essa experiência... Making grown men cry lol
My favorite driver ever... and the Formula 1 car I fell in love with when I started watching in 1991. How simple they looked and how incredibly efficient they were... Back to Senna, he wanted to win without slowing down. It cost him a victory in Monaco. I, for one, appreciated his tenacity. I saw some of that in Mansell and a young Juan Pablo Montoya. The car wasn't perfect? Who cares! They would drive the thing, end of the story.
Todays “F1” cars will never be held in such deference
this is amazing
i cant look at tony and not see what ayrton might looked like in this times, there is no better person to drive it other than tony!!
I hope they fixed the gear box since Brazil 1991
Super nice interview and view but, where is the driving? Would be lovely to hear the roar and Tony's driving this legendary beast!
It’s amazing how small these cars are.
MUITA BACANA!!! VERY COOL!!! É NOIS ANTÔNIO!!!
Wanna see the next video now!!
A couple bros with a cool car
Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Pilota. Monstro turbo
Essa é a de 1991..é um v12 aspirado.
The barcode in place of Marlboro is a tough deal to see. If you scan the code on William T. Ribbs car it links you to the Marlboro Menthol man page.
That livery though was one that was also raced. On that model of car it was used in the 1991 British Grand Prix.
Who dislikes a video like this????
Let's all take a moment for the guy or gal that was to drive the Senna car before Tony's people put a broom stick into the front wheel of that happening ;-)
Yeah, feel bad for that person
If I heard Tony's story, I would gladly give up that opportunity to him.
Needed to keep the Marlboro logos on. You can’t erase history.
Well learn history then. First lesson is to watch the 1991 British Grand Prix. It's a nogo though to put censored historic pictures on the internet.
@@armorgeddona no go to put censored photos on the internet? lol go get another vaccine.
Tony the car is nice but really!!! I think a 2002 Lola is way nicer
Foda
I'm cry....
I'm forma Brazil
mclarren doesnt want to hear NO.
pilotando o carro que é bom, não aparece no vídeo
toni, you know nothings free, your standing next to the HONDA sign on the car, your suit says chevy!! history with senna says HONDA. you got out of the car seeing honda everywhere. mclaren wants you to drive HONDA MCLAREN. its coming soon. your break at the brick yard is over. no more circles, ha ha ha.
Let him get that thing on to the racetrack
I have models of this car and they were so fast and brutal it makes these new f1 cars look like crap, v12 what a beast of a machine !
