    Give me til payday and I WILL buy this awesome book! The color version even. While I could never afford to sail in real life, this book could give me knowledge to sail in my dreams at night.

      When I started sailing I could not afford it too. So I cleaned boats and helping out at the Dock of a sailing School/Club and instead getting payed they teached me how to sail. After a while I could teach myself and for that I was alllowed to sail by myself in the evening. Then I started as a deckhand on a Yacht. And so on. Just as an inspiration .
      (I do not earn More Money with the colored Version of the book. Even less. The Print is just very expensive.)

    What about the centreboard? Should'nt it be retracted to some degree when running downwind?

    • @captainsailnator
      @captainsailnator  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Michel, that's a good point! Thank you! The centreboard can be retracted on downwind an even on broad reach, because there is no drift. It creates unnecessary resistance on these points of sail.

      @OldJong Před 3 lety +1

      @@captainsailnator Yes Captain! And I also think that a retracted centreboard can make an accidental jibe less a dramatical thing! :-)

    A scientific question, rather than a sailing question : If a balloon is released from a boat, it will go downwind at wind speed. Is there any way that the boat can get to a downwind position before the balloon does?

    • @captainsailnator
      @captainsailnator  Před 3 lety +1

      I think some boats can sail faster than the apparent wind, but I don't think on downwind course. But I am not sure.

    • @DownhillAllTheWay
      @DownhillAllTheWay Před 3 lety

      @@captainsailnator Thanks for the answer. It is certain that a fast yacht (esp of the America's Cup breed) can show a water speed faster than the wind speed when on a beam reach, or possibly even on a broad reach - but here's the reason I asked ... czcams.com/video/jyQwgBAaBag/video.html
      I believe it to be a BS claim - one of those videos designed to go viral - but I must confess that I'm not ready to put my head on a block and decry it. They actually make the claim of going downwind faster than a balloon that is blowing in the wind. To my mind, when a wind vehicle reaches wind speed, it has to accelerate in order to surpass that speed - but at wind speed, there is no apparent wind - so where does the energy come from? They reckon from the road, which drives the propeller, but that smacks of perpetual motion. Hmmm...

    • @captainsailnator
      @captainsailnator  Před 3 lety

      The Americas Cup Yachts are so fast, that they never sail on a downwind course. (the apparent wind depends on the speed of the boat, because it's a mixture of the true wind and the headwind) So the ballon would go to another direction as the boat, I think. When you look at the sails of these Ameras Cup Yachts, they are trimmed for close hauled most of the time they sail. The video you mentionend was recommended to me by youtube too. I tried to understand it, but unfortunately my english is not good enough to follow the details. So I can't say anything to it. Sorry.

      @Mike Collins I came here to ask the same thing 😅

    • @ironchin17
      @ironchin17 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes. It depends on the boat, the vast majority of sailing boats can’t do it but an exceptionally fast boat will beat a balloon. Something like an America’s Cup yacht can sail 3x wind speed. It can’t do it in a straight line exactly following the wind direction, but if the yacht zig zags, the speed advantage is enough for it to beat the balloon even though it has to travel a greater distance.
