Mark Kermode reviews The Third Man | BFI Player

- Revisiting Carol Reed's timeless thriller, The Third Man, once voted the greatest British film of all time. One of the greatest British films, Carol Reed's classic very consciously emphasises its time and place - post-war Vienna - yet its resonant themes around loss of innocence and a fall from grace render it timeless. Joseph Cotten plays the writer searching the Austrian capital for his missing friend, Harry Lime. He's disturbed to discover that Lime recently died, but soon begins to doubt the official version of events.

Orson Welles in the doorway. He does a better job acting with his facial expressions in this scene than most actors can pull off in a spoken segment. Outstanding movie in everyway.
"Victims? Don't be so melodramatic." The Ferris Wheel scene is one of the greatest ever in Cinematic history.
True
Mr. Kermode's review is, in my view, absolutely correct. The film is just astounding, in several respects. The music, of course, is so, so atmospheric and perfectly in-tune with the story. The photography....well, I have never seen it excelled.
I try to watch this at least once a year. In the last 3 years, I have started going to Vienna to watch it in the Burg Kino. There is something very special about seeing this movie in the city where it was shot. It makes the movie even more special for me.
You sir, have made the right decisions in life. Fuck, to wander the same city after walking out of the film would be incredible.
@@Theomite 😊
Wow. Tell me more. I absolutely wish to visit Vienna from the the 'Third man' perspective. I will google 'Burg Kino' and see what I come up with. Thanks and Merry Christmas (2022).
@@alisdairmclean8605 you can also do the third man tour. They have a museum with some interesting stuff from the movie. It is the perfect city for any fan of the movie.
Tom. I have been watching it since 1983 but never lucky enough to see Vienna with all its old world charm. .
I would have left a comment earlier, only a parrot bit me.
Superb movie. One of the strongest emotional scenes in a hospital's children's ward is achieved without showing a single suffering child; only the nurses attending those in the beds and the discarded toy of one of the children who didn't make it.
Free of income tax, old man.
MrHEC381991 Free of income tax.
Only way to save money nowadays
One of my all time favourites. I must have seen it 10 times.
I apologize I've only seen it 9 times. (rushes to closet to find CD and watch it again!>>>>>>>>> )
I agree with Mark Kermode, The Third Man film is a feast for the eyes and ears, and every scene is a masterpiece.
One of the best films ever made. Easily in my top ten. Pure cinema, the actors, the script and soundtrack are 👌
Amazing cinematography!
I watched this film in the 1980s as a matinee at a cinema in Vienna. Marvellous.
Brilliant film, and one of the best movie character entrances ever.
One of the best films of the 20th century. (first half)
uh, apparently when it was named/voted THE GREATEST BRITISH FILM OF THE 20TH CENTURY. That's all.
Welles should not have taken/gotten opening credit. That would have added to the suspense. Apart from this, pretty much a perfect film.
Such a great reveal of Lime in the light. Superb film with a dénoument to die for.
Bloody.Flipping.Perfect.
The epitome of "Film Noir". I can't think of post WW Two Europe without scenes of this movie coming to me. In my mind it is always linked to another Orson Wells movie "The Stranger". Another post WW Two thriller where Wells plays the bad guy being hunted down. But the the setting is the opposite of a demolished Vienna. Instead it's a quaint idyllic New England town out of a Norman Rockwell painting- home to a prestigious prep school for the sons of America's oldest and most powerful families.
there is a small arthouse cinema in vienna [Burg Kino
Opernring 19] which shows this film every day. i did a guided tour of the filming locations then saw the film (yet again) in the small movie theatre. brilliant day
No argument regarding the greatness of The Third Man but Reed's earlier, Odd Man Out (1947) with James Mason may well be it's equal.
eric blair Odd Man Out is very good, as is The Fallen Idol and Our Man in Havana. But I think that The Third Man is my favorite film of all-time. So it must be Carol Reed’s best film, ha ha.
Eric Blair -not sure the back streets and endless pissing rain of war blitzed Befast trump the elegance of post war Vienna -in fact ironically the Luftwaffe were gratefully responsible for most of the civic improvements in Belfast demolishing a large part if it !
Instead of Wells having directed parts of The Third Man, more likely Carol Reed's style was influenced after watching Citizen Kane.
and like with all the great ones - you are just waiting for Orson Welles to appear again. He makes this movie a classic for me.
Such a beautiful film to look at though I admit I did not like it the first time I saw it, I must have been in an odd mood because the next time I saw it, it captivated me!
It was Welles' smirk. Admit it.
One of the greatest movies ever
Great film, cast and director and crew. Better than the book. Great music.
Only Orson Welles could have made that late iconic appearance
This film is a masterpiece
Ah my all time favorite movie. totally captivated by all aspects
I’ve long suspected that this film was an influence on “The Ipcress File.” The surrealistic photography, the jangly music, the Cold War amorality and paranoia, and most importantly the hidden connection to history. Graham Greene was a close friend of Kim Philby, and based Lime’s charming crook persona on Philby. In “The Ipcress File” the villain’s name is Ken Dalby.
Good point Daniel .!
Brilliant, my favourite film, full stop.
A critique worthy of subject
Excellent, brief review.
A masterpiece of cinema
In what catagoree
Would you place Mr. James Joyce?
Is Mr. Martins working on a new book?
Kermode bang on the money here!
very good video
I think saying that this movie was inspires by Citizen kane is reduntant, like, Citizen Kane inspired most
And it's BETTER than Citizen Kane!
ninetyweeks when people say citizen kane is the best film ever made, I always think that its not even the best film of the 1940s, that title belongs to the third man.
not even the best Cotten/Welles collaboration
The best film ever in my opinion
no
@@not_henry_the_fifth Citizen Kane was a game changer in film making. That is one of the main reasons why it is so highly regarded.
"stop acting the fool, Martins"
i watch it like 2 days ago , it was a good film , but i didn't like it that much , the thing is i love the final part of the movie more than the first 2/3 of it , there is a twist after that the movie turn great , all of the stuff before it didn't click for me at all
The theme sound a lot like Spongebob theme
Don't know, but it occurs to me that the SpBob staff was probably familiar w 3M!
I do love Welles' line about Switzerland, though the "brotherly love" should be regarded as tempered by the reality that many Swiss men served abroad as mercenaries. They still provide the Pope's personal guard.
Yrs ago, I had a Prof who had been in the Swiss army in WW2, and SAW ACTION. The German occupation commander of a town on the French-Swiss border was going to burn the French half as reprisal. The Swiss unit fought, captured & occupied the town, until Berlin sent a more reasonable cmdr. Don't confuse Swiss for sissies!
@@marcwantuch266 Thank you for sharing that story from the Second World War! I know that the Swiss shot down German aircraft that violated their airspace on more than one occasion during the war. I definitely don't regard the Swiss as sissies!
@@shawngilliland243 there was a story that a German General.asked a Swiss diplomat what would happen if the German Army crossed the border His reply was that 2 million Swiss men would go home from.work ; get out their rifles and shoot every German they see -the Germans never tried seriously to.invade and a neutral.Switzerland was of far more use to Germany in any event .
@@ronnieince4568 I love that story - thanks for sharing it!
Proof that the past was better.
THIS film greater than Lawrence of Arabia? Naw. It comes pretty close though. I'd say it owes too much to Welles though to be truly British.
This is waaay better than Lawrence of Arabia
Lawrence is a 4 hour snooze fest.....as over-rated as can be......
Lawrence of Arabia is a very good movie. One of the best movies to come out at that time. The Third Man is possibly the greatest movie ever. That is the difference between the two.
theproplady - Wells is an actor you moron , he gets paid to do what the director tells him , also , there were a lot of Austrians in the film , so by your way of thinking , it should be an Austrian film !!!!!! , eat some manure and try and grow a brain before you give us any more of your pathetic utterances !
Easy Jake ... Welles was also a director, & was used to getting his way, even as an actor. After shooting 1 scene in the sewer, he refused to go back in there. They had to build a set for him at Shepperton!
I dont think its a british film in its foundation. The creator and major influence, visually and dramatically is clearly Welles. Reed never used those angles and never had that inspiration in any of his other films, though some were good, and he was a good director in his own right. He wasnt a genius though, like Welles
Have you not seen Odd Man Out?
@Juan Altredo. It is a British film my friend. Graham Greene wrote it and Carol Reed directed. Robert Krasker was Australian and did the lighting and cinemaphotography. It's a very quirky movie and hence deeply British.
here we go , whingeing European disdain for anything British , we should have left you to the Germans in both wars for all the thanks and gratitude you show us , that's just one of the reasons we want out of the EU !
@@swarthyjake4433 When you make the same exact comments that an American would make, it's time to pause and assess why you sound dickish. This coming from an American.
Look at the angles in Fallen Idol
Soundtrack is terrible though
no, soundtrack is great.
Suondtrack is perfect
Maybe you should better go to some rock concert.
No, it’s brilliant, atmospheric and unique.
Hate to say it but I did not like this film. I felt the pacing dragged, I didn’t root for any characters, the damn theme song over and over hurt my ears and completely ruined any suspenseful theme the movie was going for... I really don’t get the hype.
You are an anachronist, aren't you ? You are not able to put yourself in the shoes of people who lived during this period after WW2 in Europe. You view the actions and the music from today's viewpoints. Aren't you afraid this makes you an uneducated fool ? This movie is not a piece of a puppet theatre but of a long gone time spirit.
You can root for Callahan, sorry, Calloway, and his subordinate Sergeant Paine. The only truly decent characters in the film.
The soundtrack is poor, terribley poor appallingly so.
Teenagers should move along...
