It's funny, I remember in the late 90's Japan seemed so far ahead of the rest of the world in terms of gaming & technology and then slowly but surely come the turn of the new millennium they were completely superseded by the West. When I look at Japan now, there seems to be this odd mix of current tech and a late 90's/early 00's time capsule of tech which still persists over there which has been forgotten (as it's obsolete) here in the West. Very strange but fascinating.

Great round-up! A pity that the old SEGA logos have gone. When you first mentioned the GiGO name I also thought it was a dumb marketing decision, but going by Sega Retro, it was a chain from the early 90s that got phased out in favor of the SEGA World branding, so I suppose for some Tokyoites it has a certain nostalgia to it, even if it means nothing to the outside world or the younger generation. Do you know if there is anywhere in Tokyo that has the F355 challenge cabinet?

Arcades up til the late 90's were a place where you go to get the cutting edge, high tech, better experience of gaming, while at home you were stuck with lesser games and worse versions of arcade games, unless you owned a NeoGeo AES, though many Saturn games came close (it may have failed with everything else, but it did arcade games well enough, especially Model 2)
Then when the late 90's hit and I found out my home copy of Soul Caliber was a BETTER VERSION than the arcade one, then during the PS2 era things really started to swap places and now???
Well now arcades are where you go for a "retro experience" playing old games, games with simpler graphics, and games without online multiplayer for the most part.
It's like arcades and home consoles completely switched places and no one even cared...

I'm thinking of visiting Japan hopefully for my birthday this year or next year. I'm a huge video arcade gaming fan, and I've been like that all my life. Can you tell me a list of video arcade game centers in Japan that are still there and still going strong? And will I as an American be welcomed there in any of these places. I realize they have strict rules about foreign visitors. I also need to know what I can do to make my dream of coming to visit Japan soon. I'm autistic and I need to know as much as possible before I think of going there. I have many books about Japan, and I've read some of the latest ones. Tell me all the info you can tell me, KidShoryuken. Thanks a lot. I hear that I need to get some kind of tour to visit Japan.

  • @TransCanadaPhil

By the mid 90s I was completely getting bored of the arcades precisely because of what I largely still see; just endless Street Fighter clones and Daytona clones. Yeah those were great in 1992-94 but I really want a lot more variety than just dozens of fighting, driving, and rhythm games. Where are the new action platformers, run and gun, and puzzle games ala Contra, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Strider, Tiger Road, Magic Sword, Knights of the Round, etc. After 1991 they basically stopped making anything but 1-on-1 street fighter clones and driving games. It's what drove me away from the arcades largely. Glad to see the indie scene these days basically give me what I finally want though: brand new 2D sprite based pixelart arcade style games.

Man do I want Senjin Aleste (I know it’s not EXA but hear me out), Aka and Blue and Daemon Bride to get home console or Steam ports. I want the New Akatsuki Blitzkampf to make it home also which I’m asking to death for. I’d even beg for games of my dreams to get made like a CLAMP crossover fighter from Team Arcana (because lack of anime nostalgia in video games) and Arcana Heart 4 which I’m practically begging for to be a real thing in arcades and on PS5 as I’ve been clamouring for an announcement of a new anime 2D fighting game, especially on Sony’s big white book with black pages.

You do realise they're just normal CRTs mounted sideways right?? 😂 Why on earth would they design 16:9 / 4:3 CRTs that specifically refresh top to bottom!? Because of course that would be so much simpler than just rendering the game at 90 degrees. Wow, just wow.

@@jorisbonson386 I always taught that vertical arcade machine had the same 4/3 tubes put sideways but that the refresh would be inverted.
What a normal consumer grade TV can do and what the tube can do are two different things.
PVM can be tweaked in ways standard TV cannot so I assumed arcade RBG monitor set vertically where able to refresh top to bottom in that position.
I assumed refreshing sideways would give an headache and refreshing from top to bottom would be easier on the eyes.

Japanese don't see masks as being political or purely about covid. It was common even before covid to see people wear masks for a variety of reasons, especially while commuting or in the service industry, and alcohol gels in washrooms, particularly after the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong back in 2003. Japanese also have some long established hygiene habits like gargling water and hand washing when returning home or visiting Shinto shrines. Having said that, of course the globalists response to covid was full of mistruth and propaganda to keep the public scared and compliant, and the data on face masks and lockdowns for covid is inconclusive at best.

Tokyo arcades are weird. Hundreds of identical machines, all playing games 30+ years old... with swathes of Japanese men getting embarrassingly over excited at the dancing, shooting and drumming stations. Can't think of anything more dull 🤔 If I wanted retro I could play it at home for cheaper, or even on my phone for crying out loud. Step forward 30 years into the best US/UK arcades and we have modern technology and variety 👍

    • @jothain
      @jothain Před rokem +2

You do realize the concept of "retro arcade"? 🙄
Plus you're not exactly right on your "modern technology" claim. See older systems have CRT's and controls are hardwired. Sure emulation can get close, but it's not the same as emulating on with ie. BT controller and normal LCD display. First thing is that input latency is a thing on emulation. Second is simply the old display tech. It really makes a difference in many older systems. I still heavily regret selling my good quality CRT years ago. It would be so nice with retro systems these days. Now I haven't seen any similar CRT's for sale in many years.
