If you want to get philosophical I genuinely think it has something to do with artifice, representation, independence. Between synthesizers and electronic music, computer programming/game design, and so on.
There has got to be some psychological intersection between ideas about modern technology and developments in medicine, and the idea of control of ones representation in the world.
