Thanks for the great content! What are the best Orchard Grass Varieties that winter stock pile well? I want to incorporate more into my fescue pasture and I winter stock pile graze through Feb 1.
Why is the purpose of having a Orchard grass mix 40% Orchard grass 20% tall fescue 20% Perennial Rye grass and 20 annual Rye grass instead of just 100% Orchard grass? And why wouldn't you have just 40% Perennial Rye grass instead of adding 20% annual Rye grass? This is a forage grass I may buy.
Hi there! Great questions. The purpose of having a mix of grasses, like the one you mentioned, is to provide a more balanced and resilient pasture or forage crop. Including different grass species in the mix offers several advantages: 1. Diverse Nutritional Profile: Different grass species have varying nutrient compositions, which can complement each other to provide a more balanced diet for grazing animals. 2. Resilience to Environmental Conditions: Each grass species has its own tolerance to factors like drought, disease, and soil conditions. By mixing species, you increase the likelihood that at least one will thrive under prevailing conditions. 3. Extended Grazing Season: Some species may grow better in different seasons or climates. By including both annual and perennial grasses, you can extend the grazing season, ensuring a more continuous food supply for your animals. Regarding the inclusion of annual rye grass, it's often added to provide quick cover and forage in the initial stages of growth, especially if you're establishing a new pasture. While perennial rye grass offers long-term benefits, annual rye grass can provide a rapid source of forage in the short term, filling in gaps until the other grasses become established. In summary, the mix you mentioned is designed to maximize nutritional value, resilience, and grazing potential over different seasons. It's all about providing the best possible pasture or forage crop for your animals' health and productivity. Hope this helps clarify things for you! Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@RussWilson Thanks! Incredibly detailed answer. This totally make sense now. I definitely want something that will be there year round seeing we have mild winters. So with a mix like this I should have some of the grass around during every season. Thanks again.
Excellent video Russ! Thank you for the video. Orchard grass is a wonderful plant.
Thank You!!

The last orchard grass we plant was Barenburg Seeds Heavy leaf ratio. I have measured leaves at 56" just the leaf.

That grass may grow fast, but I think Walker grows faster.
