Cub Cadet Dozer, S2:E24, Time to Get to Work!

Using parts from two vintage Cub Cadet garden tractors, along with metal fabrication and welding work, we are building a mini dozer from (almost) scratch.
I use a Langmuir Systems Crossfire Pro plasma table with a Razorcut 45CNC plasma cutter and a machine torch to create many needed parts. At times we shift to the Bridgeport-clone knee/vertical mill or South Bend 10 inch lathe to complete a machining step. Occasionally, the South Bend shaper or the Logan lathe is called on for specialty work.
A Hobart Handler welder is my primary MIG welder, and it comes into play at nearly every step. If I'm not running the welder, an Oxy/Acetylene torch or the Eastwood Cut 40 plasma cutter is fired up for some molten metal removal.
Making a mini-dozer will add to the collection of equipment that I previously built, including the mini-motor grader and the tandem axle Cub Cadet dump truck/gator.
Dewalt and Makita grinders and drills, eVolution metal cutting saws, a Grizzly metal cutting band saw and Jet grinders and sanders see regular use in my projects. - Jak na to + styl

I’ll bet your wife loves the fact that you build these fun smaller machines. Keeps you from sitting around in your underwear watching tv all day. Lol, great series, I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, and you ended up with the coolest dozer in town!
You have those tracks just right! It clanks like a full size dozer when you are running around! Love it!

Compared to graders, dozers can sometimes be challenging to get the finish grade you want..
will get easier with time...
Only advice I ever really got was Keep it clean under your feet
The outer supports for wheel shafts really did the trick... I have been talking to the screen about that angle movement on blade and you did it perfectly..Great ride... Now you need a mobile cub powered automated saw mill.

Great build. It fills a box on my bucket list of things I will never get to build. Had life turned out differently for me maybe I could have.
You have a beautiful shop that is capable of most anything. It seems I always had a full machine shop at my disposal now I'm retired I miss it immensely.
Ok, so what next? You have raised the bar considerably with this project so the next may be more of a challenge to come up with.

Absolutely amazing feat of design and fabrication. I love that you made it a high track too! My favorite and the most useful machine that you have created is by far, the motor grader. I need that in my life!

There is an advantage to having a manual lift blade. Though You can lock it into several positions, You can also not lock it in, and FEEL the grade as your hand floats with the control lever. Speaking of plowing with a short frame small tractor. The hydraulic does not allow You to feel the work that the blade is doing. You can get good feedback from your blade, when You keep your hand on the lift lever which eliminates the undulations.
Yep it takes years of experience to get a good grading action on smaller dozers. Main thing I was told early in my driving was the speed, and also to work the hydraulics be able to counter the up and down with the hydraulics, so when the machine starts to rise on the front you counter with the hydraulics down and so on after a few hundred hours in drit it became natural and you can pick speed up a little, a good dozer drive in drit can finish almost like a grader.
I have just over 6000 hrs on a Fiat 70hp dozer and 2000 hours on a Inter TD25b 295hp and now and again it still happened!!

As an operator of 35 years I can tell you that what you are grading on your hard packed stone driveway is never gonna be easy with that machine lol
Try some softer areas grading fill or topsoil. You’ll be able to get a better feel of what you created so wonderfully with less frustration.

Nice dozer.
Frank please go with your fist idea for the tilt bracket. By putting the tilt bracket on blade pivot joint you are now subjecting that one bolt to all the stresses of the entire blade weight and any thing the blade pushes. Besides that the blade rotation with those extra forces will cause undue wear and breakage. That pivot pin was not designed for those forces. It was literally there so the blade and 3 point can be easily disassembled for repair or replacement.
Did you miss the part where I welded it all together? No force on that bolt now.

Nothing wrong with an adjustable wrench. LOL.
Would a single loader control work better? like kabota uses, it has all the functions you need plus a float lock, just push the handle all the way up til it hits a detent and its in float. May have to add a proportioning valve to make it work, just an idea.
That machine will turn the light blade into a piece of scrap metal. I would do any hard pushing with it until you can’t get some support in the outer ends of the blade
Love the project. You have got me trying to figure out how to do the same with two Gravelys.😉 The only problem I can see with the stabilizer bar is that it is too short causing the blade to move sideways when lifted. You have enough mounting points on the front end there to easily make a watts linkage to replace the stabilizer bar. That would eliminate any lateral movement in the blade when it moves vertically.
You seem to have much better control with the new modifications In place.
I think you deserve to switch your controls to joysticks and pedals. Maybe a little pricey and time-consuming but, worth the control-ability. Also, some kind of bolt-on guards for those tracks so close! One last thing, get yourself a comfortable high-back seat. These cumulative upgrades will help you relax while you operate the machine more effectively. You can do it; everything is great so far. Small roof: optional.
Maybe for a next project a custom rat rod cub cadet.

Thinking about either a scarifier or a winch. If I did a winch, it would have to be hydraulic...a challenging build.

WOW, Frank at 36.55 when you loaded that blade up the dozer engine never even bogged down... as if there was nothing in front of the blade.. That's a beautiful and useful piece of equipment you just built !!!
Very neat how you figured out getting the blade to float. The blade needs supports out at the ends, I think anyway. I'm sure you felt when cutting like the blade digs in then pops loose, slowing the tractor down then lunging forward. I can see the corners of the blade that when cutting are catching and actually flexing almost the entire side back then breaking free causing that lunge forward. I'd think this will eventually screw the blade up. Ofcourse you know it's not a blade built heavy duty enough for digging in to the ground to begin with. You've looked at pictures of dozers I'm sure and seen that they have the arms that run from the frame of the machine out to the sides and bottom of the blades. If you did that you wouldn't have the angle capabilities though. Still seems to need support though. To me the hydraulic cylinders configuration you have for the blade set up all sticking so far out in front of the tractor doesn't look like a dozer does to me. This is my opinion of course and I'm sure you designed this the best way you could to get it to work and it does work so I'm not trying to criticize you only trying to help with talking about the arms that support the sides of the blade. It would seem important to strengthen the sides and lower corners because of the thinness of the blade you're using and stresses exerted on the lower corners. The flexing and lunging isn't as apparent in this video as others watching the blade itself. If you haven't seen what I'm talking about already look back at other videos and specifically when you are starting a fresh cut being it's very obvious at that time. It's still really neat and awesome that you have the amazing mechanical skills to make this happen. I still want a set. Grader, dozer, articulating 6×6 dump truck. LOL! We need something to load the truck with so if possible an excavator and/or a track loader(looks like a dozer but has a bucket rather than a blade that lifts for loading a truck) would be awesome to include too! You got a long future on youtube if you do all those then build me a set as well when you get all the bugs worked out of the prototypes. LOL! Awesome to see the dozer working. I really wasn't sure if the motor would have the power to actually dig as deep as it does. Very cool! Good video.

I had to watch twice to understand how you got the float to work. Good solution.
Never seen a dozer with a 6 way blade? The movements you are seeing in the blade are just due to the slack in the attachment points. The blade itself is not flexing in any way.
Is it possible to make it where both lift cylinders are controlled by just one handle? So they both rise at the same time, like a dozer does. It would seem that your blade should go up on both sides at the same time. Not to mention you only need one hand for lift and not both. And after watching the demo of the float mounts, I think it's a success.
I'm working on how to do that. My current hydraulics set up doesn't allow that. My Grader does work that way by moving both valves simultaneously. This set up, for some reason I don't yet understand, only allows one main lift cylinder to operate at a time.

Don't make sloted brakes. Change the hydraulic valve to one with a float circuit.
Is it possible but those drive control levers on your left side and use them in one hand?
That is one outstanding project and I'm betting you had a good time doing it, but unless you had the steel or otherwise got it for nothing to say nothing of the hydraulics, I'm betting you could have gotten and old beat up Terimite or even a Case or maybe even a Bobcat, redid it, and then dixie it up with your own ideas for the same or even less money......And good as the Cadet is it will never run with an industrial machine,,,,,,But still,,,,,That is one top of the line project. Great job.
It works a whole lot better now, you still need to drive it with your feet and so you can operate the the blade with your hands. Controls need to be closer to you.
Another fine build. Good job. How about an articulated loader or possibly a forklift? And then a bigger garage.

I believe John Deere farm tractor front end loaders have a controller that have a float position if you push if forward of the down position just past a detent. Possibility if you ever need more float?
my John Deere garden tractor has float on one of the 3 hydraulic circuits
I have run dozens and dozens of machines from Cat to Case and never yet have seen one without "float" Even on track hoes with blades they have float detent. Also, shouldn't be a problem at all to get a 6 way control if you want to spend the money. Check Rock and Dirt in the parts pages and maybe you can find a used one.

Now you need some cutting edges put on the blade mold board so you don't wear it out
It has a cutting edge bolted on already.
Only other item I would put on the blade is some corner float shoes so not to wear the cutting blade corners.

My original thought was a joystick float function valve (like a loader valve) but I decided against it because you can't control three cylinders independently with it. It's intended for two cylinders/functions.

You were experiancing the same effect as every other dozer operator experianced when first starting out. Your modification gave the efect of a cable operated dozer with a floating blade while being a hydraulic operated dozer, without the cable drum behind the seat. There is a reason for getting away from the cable actuated blade , mainly not being able to force the blade down with more than the weight of the blade. In soil that may work , but in caliche rock, the hydraulic works better when backing up, with the ripper teeth breaking up the rock, for the next pass.
It does have positive press down, bottom out in the float slots
