That's too bad, generally these are pretty good little engines but, I just have a hard time seeing how an airplane engine gets so expensive. I flew a little green 172 that was at the late Enterprise Sky Park in Redding Ca. It finally displayed an annoying tiny oil leak out of the prop hub which was manageable and everyone knew it but the compression remained good. Finally on an inspection it was fixed after a long downtime so I don't know if that was an overhaul. I see that a lot now, people spending tens of thousands on avionics for older C-172s, the new fuel injected engines might be better, but the amount of fuel sumps is nuts.

We ended up buying a brand new lycoming 180hp conversion and it was completed today
I plan on breaking the engine in in the next week or two
Keep your eyes out for a video on the update

@@aviationguys247 Looking forward to that. When we broke in the new T-210 it was top of the green hair on fire for the first 50.

Good choice with the 180 HP and I’ll be ready to see how it flies and there’s a few engine conversion on the older 172 models that are priced higher than retail

The high levels of lead would tell me its eating a rod, main or thrust bearing. All other metals seem low and are probably normal. The phosphorus is most likely an oil additive.
Im not an expert just a gearhead that stayed at a holiday inn

O-300 not IO-300. Great engine, very smooth and enough power for a C-172. Changing to the O-360 will give you a nice reduction in take off distance and increased climb rate. Not much increase in the cruise speed but it is a nice conversion.

Why is that new engine so expensive? A high level answer is fine.

That’s what Lycoming is not charging they recently had a price increase
And with a deposit I still can’t get one until January or February.
This Is a complete factory new engine not a overhauled engine
