  • Dante's Inferno has captured the Western imagination but has often been misunderstood. The organizing principle is love, but love is inseparable from justice.
    Nonetheless, the categorization of the various degrees of sin is not derived from Scripture, but rather from Aristotelian ethics as he clearly explains. The pagan understandings of vice and virtue are what allow his pagan guide Virgil to direct him on his path, all the way to the summit of mount purgatory in the second canticle.
