- Masjid Quba - The first Masjid in Islam
Located on the outskirts of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Masjid Quba may be the first Masjid in the world that dates to the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in the 7th century CE. It is also the second largest and most prestigious Masjid after the Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, and it holds great significance as it was the first Masjid to be built in Islamic history. It is also said to be the site of Muhammad (ﷺ)’s first Friday prayer.
Masjid Quba has 56 domes and four minarets at the corners of the prayer hall, and it can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. This Masjid is mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah Tawbah, chapter 9, verse 108.
According to records, Muhammad (ﷺ) laid the foundations of this Masjid as soon as he arrived on his emigration from the city of Makkah to Madinah, and he took part in the construction of this Masjid with his companions.
Muhammad (ﷺ) also spent 14 days in this Masjid praying Qasr (a short prayer) while waiting for Ali to arrive in Madinah after he stayed behind in Makkah to safeguard Muhammad (ﷺ)’s life and safe escape by sleeping in his bed in his place.
In several ahadith, it was mentioned by Muhammad (ﷺ) that performing wudhu (ablution) in one’s home and then offering two Rakaats of Nafl (optional) prayers in the Masjid Quba is equal to performing one Umrah.
Muhammad (ﷺ) used to go there, riding or on foot, every Saturday and offered two Rakaats of prayer. He advised others to do the same, saying, “Whoever makes ablutions at home and then goes and prays in Masjid Quba, he will have a reward like that of an ‘Umrah.” - Sunan Ibn Majah, 1412
Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Al-Nasa’i, and Hakim al-Nishaburi also reported this hadith.
