Goodbye Naxos, Hello Santorini (Overrated?) 🇬🇷

  • ◼︎In this video, I depart from Naxos, an island I fell in love with, for Santorini. Before leaving, I made a stop at my favorite Italian restaurant, Il Girasole, for some of the tastiest pasta. Then, I boarded the ferry. Santorini is a very beautiful but super expensive island. Many people have said that it is overrated. As soon as I arrived in Perissa, the area where I'm staying, I headed to Perissa black sand beach to relax for a bit before visiting Gyro Place for some great mixed gyros. The next morning, I went to catch the breathtaking sunrise.

    Hello Emeka.
I suggest you go to the ancient city of Thira, which is on the rock you saw above the beach of Perissa. From there you have an amazing view of Perissa and Kamari. Also, if the weather permits, go to Thirasia. It is as Santorini was 50 years ago. I also suggest you go to the interior of the island (Pyrgos, Exo Gonia, Emporio) and visit a winery. You may not drink (neither do I) but it's worth a visit. Finally, try fava beans and tomato meatballs.
    Enjoy!!!

Go to Amorgos!! So much energy! Not far from Santorini, one hour I guess... visit Hozoviotissa's Monastery, vertical on the cliff in front of the sea and see the "Grand Blue" colour of the sea in Agia Anna. Katapola and Xylokeratidi for the sunset, Hora with the narrow paths ptotecting from the angry winds.... great island.

Dont judge beforehand. And no it's not overrated in my opinion. But you should visit it in the shoulder seasons. Now should be fine too.
It's an extroardinary island and I have been there 5 times. And I completely didnt have that many crowds. Also. Many people know very little to nothing about Santorini. Do a boat trip around the island and its hidden geology. Visit Vlychada beach. And also. highly recommended to wake up before sunrise, and also enjoy sunsets. The sunrises is only YOU alone. I have done it many times and your pictures will be incredible. Because they are almost entirely without a single person. Trust me.
    *Walks*
And otherwise. Do a walk along Fira, Imerovigli (Skaros Rock), Oia. Or just parts of it on different days. If you only be at a sunset spot or some chapel spots and make your opinion on that where you WILL be with plenty crowds, then you are doing it like everyone else. Do it different.
    *Food*
Also. When in Santorini. TRY Santorini Fava, and Santorini Ndomatokeftedes (famous tomato fritters as Santorini is famous for its fava and tomatoes). Also Vinsanto wines. Santorini is famous for it's wines. You can also visit a vineyard. But Also Vinsanto dessert wines are totally special.
    *Geology*
So as mentioned. A boat trip around the geology of the island is wonderful. Also Vlychada beach is unique and most don't know. Red Sand beach is more famous.
If you have no days then leave the black sand beach. Also. If you have enough days visit the core of the island. The inner island. Which should be included in a complete Santorini boat trip. There you can dip into natural hotspring waters
    *History, archaeology*
Also. Close to Vlychada beachs there is Akrotiri an incredible Middle Minoan site. A complete city part that got covered by lava by the eruption of Thira Volcano.
Santorini namely is the largest Sea Caldera on earth. Some places got covered with 70 meters of Volcanic soil. But This city part got struck 3600 years ago, but it's from around 2000 BCE, 4000 years ago, with earlier layers going back further in time. But it's an incredible historical site. The Pompei of Greece, but then much older.
*Do rent a car though,* or else you can't experience these things. And Santorini needs at least 4 days if you even want to get a glimpse of what the island truly is about,
    *Housing*
Housing can be cheap and beautiful. It's extremely easy. If you explore the island a lot then you don't need to be on the Caldera rim itself. Which will cost 200+ euro a day easily. If you like me are outside the entire day and enjoying all the beauties around the island, then you can have a apartment that is wonderful, just 40 meters away from the caldera in many places and the prices will be 50 euro a day. Sometimes even with breakfast included.
I can tell you so much more. Santorini is absolutely not overrated. Its amazing. Truly is. But ONLY if you do it justice. That other Greek here saying it's overrated. It's not. Greeks have a complete tendency of not seeing their own beauty AND hardly do anything on the island or place. This accounts for 90% of the Greeks. They are generally extremely ungrateful to their beauty of their local nature and locations.
The only reason when I do agree a Greek says something related to Santorini, is when they say that there are many many other wonderful Greek islands. 100% agreed. There are countless incredible islands in Greece. All unique. But that's what Santorini is. very unique and stunning
*Santorini is an incredible island. And IF you do it justice its exactly as it is. Truly special and not any hype comes close to the real deal.*

Welcome to Greece again! Santorini is beautiful, but very touristy. You should probably avoid the bigger villages if you only want to find peace and quiet. That said, Oia (pronounced EE-ah) is the must-go, must-see of all the villages I think, despite it always being overrun by visitors. You can't visit Santorini and not see Oia. It's where you will find hordes upon hordes of people cramped onto terraces trying to get selfies during the famous Oia sunset but it is most definitely worth a visit, despite the crowds.
Now, if you're looking for places that are less touristy but still offer the charm and beauty of Santorini, here are a few suggestions:
Pyrgos is located in the center of the island and offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding landscape. Walk down its narrow streets, and explore the medieval castle ruins.
Megalochori is known for its whitewashed buildings, blue domed churches, and vineyards. You can visit the local wineries for wine tasting.
Akrotiri is where you can explore the ancient ruins, often referred to as the "Minoan Pompeii." There are well-preserved ruins dating back to the Bronze Age. It's usually less crowded compared to other attractions on the island.
Vlychada Beach, located on the southern coast of the island, offers a more secluded and tranquil setting. Its unique landscape, characterized by white volcanic cliffs and black sand is amazing.
Emporio is one of the largest and oldest villages on the island. Climb up to the top of the medieval Kasteli (castle) for panoramic views or just wander through its streets.
Santorini Caldera is a popular attraction, and you should go no matter what. You can hike along the caldera rim from Fira to Oia or explore villages such as Imerovigli or Firostefani.
Generally May is not a time when the situation there is unbearable, so make the most of your stay.
    Hope you have fun!
P.S. It's YEE-ros. Not "G". There is no glottal "g" sound at all. How do you pronounce Yeezees? That's the yee sound!
The wrapped yeeros is cheaper. The 10 dollar version is what we call a "merida", which means more of everything. It's a full helping on a dish with extras. Enjoy your stay in Greece!

18:02 I see you met the Indian! During daybreak and after a "long" night back in the 80's and 90's when the road above you did not existed and all the bars went straight to the sand we where lying on the beach to see him. I am talking about the mountain line behind you which with the right light (and some drinks) resembles to an Indian Chief's profile. In any case its a nice excuse to get laid :) Ok. Its a fully commercialized island theese days but it still remains a unique island. The feeling you get in caldera either your in a bar restaurant or walking with a beer you cannot get it anywhere else. I consider myself lucky to live it in its original form but still you can have a great time (was there 2 years after a long time and it was fine.

Santorini is expensive because she is like a beautiful woman. Beautiful women cost money. Santorini is by far the most SPECTACULAR of all Greek islands and one of those "life time" destinations. I hope you were able to visit Oia village at the very Northern tip of the island. The views from Oia are absolutely jaw dropping and Oia its self is the most photographed village in the world. It is also featured on many American made films, like the opening scene of Lara Croft and the cradle of life with Angelina Jolie. A tour on the Volcano island is also worth while, as it is swimming in the Hot springs next to the volcano island, if you didn't mind getting wet! By the way, congratulations on your Greek language skills. You sound almost like a Greek! 😁

People go there without ANY pre-research. Sorry, but then it's your own fault because you're not doing the island any justice. If you truly do it well and explore and see the island, then no hype comes lose to the reality.

As a greek I'd say Mykonos is much more overrated than Santorini. Both expensive noisy and overcrowded in the summer but at least Santorini has some interesting sites like the caldera of the volcano the black and red beaches the sunset in the village of Oia and most importantly for me the well-known prehistoric Cycladic archaelogical site at AKROTIRI which dates back to the 5th millennium and was destroyed 3600 years ago by the volcanic eruption. I prefer quieter islands for vacations. Paros and Ios are popular islands too and not so overrated. Btw Nisyros another little island also has a volcano like Santorini and it is active and has a big caldera you can visit but it is not well-known at all and not very touristic.

I'm sorry to say but you have been misguided in your comments section or maybe you misunderstood. Gyros is pronounced yee-ros. You do NOT emohadixlze the g sound.

Would you go to Cyprus? It’s beautiful. Go to the Sea caves. American base on the island too.
    Your Greek pronunciation is fabulous!

I sense someone may have upset you, I hope I'm wrong because you seem like a good person.
You should have stayed in Fira at Casa Portello, friendly staff, beach a few feet away, you can put a towel down and listen to the waves, they are reasonably priced both stay and food wise. Their toasties and traditional food are delicious. It's not a flashy place but it's perfect for a good night's sleep.
Where are you planning to go to after Santorini?

Santorini is not as overrated as Mykonos. The problem with Santorini is that many businesses are owned by foreigners who aid in money laundering. Many do not care about Greek hospitality; all they care about is collection of money. Go to Akrotiri where the ancient city is located. Stay in the centre of the island where prices are a bit more normal. Oh and get your feet wet. The water is amazing for your skin and soul. Enjoy!

I live and have visited alot of Greek islands
Santorini I will NEVER visit again
As we landed on the island
The Greek women were shouting to each other
"come see this family. They have a black and a white daughter"
    Laughing and mocking us
So did the guys and one woman called my niece a whore
It was nothing but bad experiences from the locals
All because we're a mixed race family
    But what they didn't realise
    We're all fluent in Greek
Including my then husband who was Jamaican!
My daughter at the time was only 6 and made to feel awful
