They were already giving us teammates of different ranks. You're also probably in the highest MMR as well. The skill "buckets" they use are way to wide when it comes to skill. In my opinion, they need to just go back to the previous rank systems, and add time to the queue to make sure you're playing players in your rank. It's weird that you can be in silver but be playing the best players in the world. The point of a rank is to rank up so it's kind of strange being in the second lowest rank but still playing people that are the best
Had a game 2 seasons ago when everyone was masters, I was in masters and chatting with a teammate, he asked what rank I was, I told him masters, he was in bronze. The people we were up against were all diamond or above while I had one bronze teammate and the other said he was in gold. these ranked changes just feel dumb and are hurting the game, but Respawn keeps trying to fix this system that is flawed in it's very core. I generally don't hate on respawn for most changes since I know EA is the one in charge and forces a lot of the bad ones like the 160 dollar PK skin, but I believe this is entirely just respawns fault.
Provisional is highly unbalanced as in my first 10 matches of ranked i gained nearly 3500 lp while my teammates who did only slightly worse got barely half of that. Could you help explain how that works more I also love your videos.@@MangosInTrees
I think everyone can agree that the absolute biggest frustration is just the lack of transparency. It just made more sense to me that during a game, I knew exactly how much I'd lose or gain if i were to die at that exact moment. Promotional trials can be a good thing but not everyone is going to be on the trials, even if you 3 stack.
You are right for trials, but at least, in 3 stacks, you can believe your teammates will help you accomplish the missions so you will do for them when their trial time will come. It is almost impossible to have the same experience in SoloQueing.
Don't rely on others. Develop your skills. I solo Q to diamond every season and I don't even grind. If you don't even know how much lp you get at what placement then bro. You need to stop playing rank. 😂🤦 people like you seriously need to up your game IQ

Ranking up has been a huge pain since they made -50lp cost for all ranks. As someone who doesn't play the game too much back then I could rank up if I didn't perform bad (for lower ranks). But after they made that change what is the point of ranking up. Some of the matches you lose straight 50-30 lp and other matches you perform decent or good and get 10-20lp. It's no longer about individual performance its about grinding hours and getting lucky in some games. This system doesn't respect the time of the casual ranked players.
I agree with this. They need to completely rework this ranked system to accommodate the players who don’t play as much. Honestly I remember a few seasons back I didn’t even play that much yet I knew I could grind to diamond with enough time out in. Now it’s become like I have to play the best every game, carry my team, place a good placement or get first to even rank up like wtf man

Yesterday I had a game with 7 kills and 2 assist placed 7th or so and gained 60 points. The very next game was a sweat fest with preds and stacks and I placed 3rd with 1 kill I think and also 60 points. I just turned the game off afterwards. I think i agree with most of what you said. For me its just that the hidden mmr isn't working like they say it is, its not even about my teammates it's about me. I'm not that great a player and to go up against people in the highest rank doesn't feel good, especially when its in placements or silver. The highest I've ever been is d2, and that was multiple seasons ago. So what data are they getting that tells them i need to be in these games...
I have the same experience as you in pubs. I constantly die against preds/masters/ 4K damages/20 kills badges players and my higher rank (apart from season 17) was plat 3. I am a very average player with no real movement techs and not aiming like a god so I don't understand why the system is always mathmaking me in these lobbies. Mostly also as I see is that, from my team, I make the biggest damage or amount of kills very often but, on the other hand, I can have 20 games in a row dying from the first encounter without even being able to hit a single shot. I have tons of screenshots showing my point here. I think it is unfair and not honest to not have a clear explanation how the MMR/SBMM is working. And I think it is even worst this season. I have a global D/K of 0,77 and this season I am turning at around 0,6 since I'm always matched with really higher skill levels players. Don't understanding why is really frustrating and I am clearly wondering if I will not just simply quit this game although I really appreciate the lore, the movement and the overall mechanics of this game. What a pity....
@awakeant8079 Absolutely agree with everything you've said here. Season 17 was my first season. While I'm getting better every Season, I can't move like I want and my aim is average at best.. I'm trying to compensate with learning to play cover, when to push, how to reset, reading the fights.. Etc All of that only helps so much when you are constantly running into people who can just sail over your head while beaming you from one wall jump and then taking your teamate down to boot.. I want to keep playing amd I do enjoy the game but part of me feels like I should just stop because I'll NEVER be able to play at the level of those that keep sheeting on me.. Obviously I was playing exceptionally well, but this season I’m back down to a 1 KD and it’s been like a week. I have no idea what the fuck is going on, most gunfights aren’t even competitive. Playing Preds early in the season was a normal thing for years in Apex. The first couple weeks are always congested with Preds and the really sweaty players trying to break out. But with the new SBMM, good players are playing Preds every single lobby for the entire season, whether you’re Silver or in Diamond. I can’t think of anything more stressful to play than this new system of ranked Apex. And, to make things even more lopsided, if you are Pred mmr and want to play with your lower skilled buddies, they’re going to get absolutely rolled by the multiple Pred squads in the lobby. That’s no fun for anyone.
Right. The start of seasons were a mess in the old system, but it pretty quickly stabilized over the first week or so. In this world, your rank really and truly has correlation to skill - I’m a very average player and was in plat last season watching CZcamsrs also in plat. There’s absolutely no way we’re even close to the same skill level. Respawn just made it so that anyone can grind to the higher levels if they want to invest the time, and that just takes all the fun out of the system for me.
My buddy and I don't even play ranked anymore. we could casually get into plat and then grind to diamond if we had time. We would usually only play one night a week for a few hours, maybe two nights if it lined up. I would be able to solo queue to diamond from plat4 if he couldn't play, and I made it to masters in S12 (i know i know). This season we were placed in bronze 2, and literally every game we died to triple stacked masters/preds. Ranked isn't sweaty for us anymore; it's impossible, and for what? A banner frame and badge? Pass.
Yeah, I think you've absolutely nailed it with this summary. As a pretty bad, casual solo player, the game is already stacked against me (which I can take) but all these systems are beginning to feel like extra BS piling on top. Any system like this, in a game like this, HAS to feel addictive. It has to pull you back for one more go and whilst the game itself always does that, the layering of these obscure systems does the absolute opposite.
The MMR changes have been brutal since they were introduced, but the promotional trials might as well be considered the nail in the coffin for solo queue players. It's hard enough to get random teammates on the same page every single match, never mind getting them on the same page when it comes to playing with promotional objectives in mind.
Yeah the only tolerable thing is mixtape and if for some reason some solo queuer hates mixtape then the game is basically unplayable right now unless you have a severe masochistic streak.

I came back to the game ever since cross progression started (I was on PS4 in the past and I would never start over... I had a ton of skins) and I only play unranked... besides nobody using mics the games are fun and very action packed without needing to sweat my balls off... Love it...

@@iTuber012 Yep agreed. I uninstalled when they made ranked all about placement because the pros liked it. The game then turned into 20 minutes of hiding before one big fight at the end of each game with 10 rats. Not fun.
Me and a friend were talking about trying the rankeds again... but after seeing what those missions would add to maintain the rank and with the luck we have with the randoms we decided to just stay in pubs
you dont need to rely on randoms i mean, 2vs3 is enough, trials are a pain in the ass you get kills or top 5, sometimes is hard to get both, winnuig also can happen
great video Mango. I hope the Devs take into consideration all of the well thought out points you've made here. If we absolutely have to stick with the trials method instead of going back to what we used to have with a ranked system and everything was transparent, then I would like to see a change made where once you hit tier 1 of your current division, the "trials" immediately start. The challenge is to get 1000 LP plus either win 1 game or top 10 and 3 kills x3 times. You have unlimited games to achieve this but you do not progress until you get 1000 LP and complete one of the challenges. The only way it resets is if you fall to tier 2. I feel like this is a reasonable middle ground to where things are currently at. Im a solo queue diamond player. Ive hit diamond pretty much every season Ive played since season 1. I failed my gold trials 5 or 6 times before I was able to pass with the 3 kills/top 10 x 3 games and it feels really bad to perform well, even place 2nd multiple times and still fail to get promoted to my next division
The thing they need to fix most is the matchmaking. For ranked and pubs. I am constantly matched when playing solo with people that are just terrible. I don't claim to be a pro but I have basic game sense. These guys are shooting at the floor lifelines that don't ever heal. There was a fuse that didn't even use one knuckle cluster the whole match. Please for the love of God, bring a solo mode or fix the damn matchmaking
I AGREE 100% , the matchmaking sucks, im also masters/ diamond and 99% of my games im the best player in the team and on top of that im placed in silver rank but playing vs preds and masters with 30k kills , if im silver rank this season i should be playing against silver level of skill players no preds
This was a really nice and well put together video. Something tells me that provisional matches are not only being weighted by internal MMR, but also rather previous ranked season performances. I ended up finishing Rookie I out of provisionals, with the best person on our squad finishing Bronze II -- a friend from outside of our squad who is unarguably weaker as a player managed to get out of provisionals Silver II -- me and my squadmates did not really do ranked last season on account of being really strapped for time and finished in Bronze/Silver, respectively, while our friend who played the entire time managed to get to Plat II. I've run into players who have participated in Challenger Circuit finals and have put up a reasonable fight against them, which ideally should say that I'm really not in the lower echelon of players. I feel like this is inherently where the problem lies: provisionals better than before, but they're definitely not using internal MMR enough. If my public lobbies are putting me with heavily populated Diamond+ players (and this was the case pre-S17 as well), I would think that provisionals would aim to place me somewhere in upper silver/lower gold to factor that 1.5 tier drop to imply that I'm at least Platinum or Diamond. But it doesn't seem to work that way. I think part of Respawn's shtick here too is player retention. Ironically, the grindy nature of S18 coupled with being strapped on time made me want to play the season, haha My squadmates and I plan on actually going in this season; we'll see how things go.
this is 100% spot on with how a looooot of us feel. your should also do one on the matchmaking of pubs right not. i keep getting brand new teammates and going up against 2x prestige’d enemies and the times i get at least 1 similar skilled teammate the whole lobby is preds and there’s no point we just get rolled in our first engagement
I literally cannot play pubs without having a pred champion or a masters champion. My highest rank ever is diamond 3 about 10 seasons ago. When I’m playing ranked I see a lot of jumps comparing my teammates to the champion squad/squad who kills us. Getting ran down in rookie by previous diamond+ is overwhelming at times but I still play the game cause… I love it even though I hate it. Thanks for articulating a lot of thoughts I wasn’t able to on this season and last seasons ranked modes!
Fully agree with everything you’ve said. The way ranked has been in the past 3 seasons since the LP change it’s only gone down hill from there. They need to clean up the mess they have made

This season has been the sweatiest so far. Normally in Plat/Diamond lobbied and I struggled to get out of bronze. Feel like I’m getting lazered all the time, playing against coordinated 3 stacks. Not sure how much I’ll keep playing, it’s too frustrating getting stomped on constantly.
I mainly solo queue and i recently completed my promo trial matches to move from rookie I -> Bronze IV shortly after completing my preliminary matches. My first match i placed top 10 and achieved the 3 kill requirement, my next 3 matches my teammates were awful and we placed 11th twice & then 12th in my 4th math. In my last promo match I knew it was an all or nothing situation in which i had to win to move forward. I demonstrated why I deserve to move up in all of these matches, but this last one I got incredibly lucky multiple times despite one of my teammates being terrible and one being of equal skill. My stats at the end of the game after winning, as pretty much a two man squad, were 2 respawns, 3 revives, 6 eliminations, 2 assists, 7 knocks, 1850 damage, and I placed 1/20. My point being that even if i didn’t win that match, but played incredibly well in it along with my other 4 matches despite having bad teammates who abandoned once downed and ran straight into fights alone, I believe I should easily be moved up to bronze IV anyway. 5 promo matches is too few for a true testament of skill level. The amount of times your team goes to an overpopulated drop point and dies immediately is at least 25% of the time you solo queue and i believe that is even an underestimate.
I haven't played this game since last season, at least not very much. Last season I was in Gold 1/2 for a total of a month and a half. That pissed me off so badly lol, thank you for making this video, so I know whether or not to come back to grinding ranked
You hit the nail on the head, brother. I started grinding ranked a couple weeks ago. I get that I was late to the grind, but since I hit silver 1, I get decent teammates once every 15 games or so, and when i do, I'm hesitant jump into fights with them before 10th place because of how the last 10+ matches have gone. It's a lose lose situation. Also the teammates I'm getting don't have nearly as much time in the game as I do meanwhile the enemies have 4k damage badges and 5,000+ kills on their selected legends. Usually a 3 stack of any of the following: Horizon Conduit Revenant Catalyst or Loba I'm almost relieved when I see an Octane or Wraith nowadays because I know they're a fellow solo queuer
As a solo queue no name player, it’s been difficult. As a master player, in facing 3 stack preds like WTP, Sang, diffq, and getting paired with low level/low IQ player that W key to die and then blame you.
As mostly soloq diamond player(a few times master) I always had the experience that for teammates I mostly got low level account players, bronze/silver/gold/plat players, veil mostly going up against diamond(not hardstock dia 4 players) and above level players, as well as a good amount of duo/3 stacks! This has always been the case for me no matter what ranked system they have had in place, and is part of the reason I got tired of soloq and playing apex in general!
I've been struggling to find meaningful changes from last season but maybe that's just me. There still next to no kp bonuses, the mmr is still excruciating, and top 10 still feels like the only thing that matters.
Really just think we could go back to the structure of early seasons, backtrack a little from season 12 (when many diamond level players ranked into Masters), and it would solve almost all of the problems. You knew what you had to do to rank up, you could break even despite queueing into bad teammates, and players were engaged (not ratting out whole games). At lower ranks, the ALGS-like rubric just doesn't accurately assess players.
My "favorite" part about solo Q ranked this season is, when you enter the promo trials with the 5 attempts and you get a match with only one teammate and then he leaves, probably cuz his friend crashed and can't come back... don't wanna even talk about the old issues like packet loss or skill diff.
So, the first couple days, I got myself into bronze 2 when my placements were done, so it didn’t take long of getting good games with actually solid teammates who knew how to work off my back at times like I was with them, it felt like really solid matchmaking, and I flew up to the the end of bronze 1 and was met with my trial. Ever since I’ve gotten into my trials, the matchmaking that I was getting is gone. I’m getting teammates who throw before we even land on the ground or in the very first fight we engage. I always end up being left having to 1v3 or mission impossible my way to crafting banners, and I usually just end up getting killed. It’s been really frustrating cause I know those teammates probably weren’t on their trial so they didn’t need to win that game, which isn’t really their fault, but I think if they’re gonna add a system like this it should be trying to match you with at least teammates that have their trial unlocked so you can all be on the same page
My provisional matches were just a bunch of guys dropping hot and running into fights alone with white shields and a P2020. I 'think' I should be around the platinum level ( I have been there before) but I got dropped all the way down to rookie II. I knew this was going to happen after the first few rounds of solo queueing with Rambo.
I’ve been playing since season one. I would love to see a lot of what he touched on in the video worked on in the Apex definitely are used to be way different grinding, rank, season, 1 2 3
When the season started and I was placed in bronze 1, during my promo trials, I got haaaaardstuck bronze for about 2 weeks because my teammates were dropping solo and I couldn’t fight 3 stack preds… by myself. Also, every time I would fail a bunch of my promo trials, I would win the next game (non-promo) which was full of players who peaked at gold or silver the previous season.
The only way to mitigate the frozen points during trial is to let you keep the accumulated points thru the trial if you succeed. If you fail and have to work your way back you lose those accumulated points.
Ranked use to be my preferred game mode only issue with it before was that people were kill hungry instead of strategic, and 3 stacking even when you were playing with low skilled teammates gave you the top 1 % of players. In an effort to fix that they have broken the mode beyond repair. Getting preds in all my matches with like minimum 15k kills while I have like 8k total.
Didn't they say they wanted Ranked to be more casual? They wanted to tone down ratting, but made a system where you have to get this many kills/assists and then rat to this placement to get to the next ranked. I hate playing pubs because of the match making, but now I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep playing the game at all
in the lobby you can inspect your last teammates to see what rank they are, but people turn off the feature that lets its how up some sometimes you cant see (i've been getting bronze and rookie when im gold)
One big issue for many season im not sure about this one cause i was taking a break from ranked is that there is no room to improve you either fight people far better than you or people far worse and you end up getting stuck.
I have solo queued every season and usually handle it just fine, but this has been one of the worst ones in a long time from how many players are splitting off immediately or running away from the team. Even worse than it was a couple seasons ago with valks hiding in trees I thought promotional trials would be good but it seems like people only put any effort in DURING their trial and are still ratting to the top of each rank
This is what I said before the system was put in place. People will still rat tip you have to rank up and then in the rank up will mostly rat till top 10 still before doing anything.
8:29 this is so true I solo Que because I have no one to play with and I was unable to to finish the trial because I was getting top ten or getting second place untill I had these two amazing ransoms and we got second and we played agian and won
To put in perspective for an average ranked player. I usually make diamond or high diamond (master in the season that didn't count). I'm stuck in freaking bronze and man it's as sweaty as diamond lobbies getting beamed before I get a chance to shoot. I remember there being progression getting harder as you go, but now it's like every rank is the same rank...
I've been playing for a month now, and I just got to 50 to get into rank, and in my opinion, it seems like everyone who plays has a problem with something, pros vs cas, pc vs controller so on and so forth, I just play to play and to get better, yeah I solo don't know anyone who plays so kinda stuck, but I think we can all agree on is the cheaters and ratters make it suck for everyone, we are just here to have fun or at least I am, great vid, keep it up
I'm kind of curious how this system will work later on. If it really eliminates all the rats, then I think they have somehow made a point. If they start increasing the elim bonuses and bring back the transparency of the good old days... *pray*. I really like the current end games in Ranked, but I'm not sure if this is due to the start of the season or the new system (guess it's the first one, but Im still hoping).
I started playing apex in season 17 then played rank in season 18. I thought ranked was flawed in many ways but one way I thought they could've helped the system was making something similar to promotion trails but instead throughout the duration of your time in that tier. FOR EXAMPLE anything like survival duration, average damage, K/D, kills with multiple guns, win rate/average game placement, healing/rez/respawns, assist, etc. There's something that clearly separates each rank from each other. For example let's say Master players average a K/D of 2.0, average 1,500 damage, and places top 8 on average. If you don't meet or exceed in most of whatever the benchmarks are for your rank you shouldn't rank up, regardless of your LP. I just think this will make ranked a bit more cohesive because when I think of an Apex Predator I think of someone who can do it all and exceeds in a lot of skills. But when they put so much emphasis on placement you see that a person can rank up highly even though they're only good at playing hide and seek or exploiting the heat shields.
Honestly as a solo queue conduit main i've realized 3 things. First my teamates might as well be hotdropping bots. Second no matter how good i do with my support character supporting my team i get no rewards or LP if anything im punished by playing support cause i dont get jack for shielding and or healing my team or revives while there are LP rewards for killing. Third most of your LP gain comes from how long you last and what you place. I went a 3 kill game with multiple assist and got 16LP it is litterally safer and better in the long run to hide! Alot of people have noticed this since half the lobby stays on the edge of the map now. There needs to bea healthy mix of how LP is gained so that one style of play isnt the only play worth it.
This makes so much sense for what I’ve been experiencing. Ranked has been terrible for me as a new-ish player. Also, after on ranked game I got like 4k LP (I think, I know it was an absurd amount) while my teammates got a usual amount. Not sure why.
I got no points in my last placement game because I was in bronze 1, so the trials kicked in even though they said that trials wouldnt affect those games. Also last season I was placed in silver 2 and we won more games this season in the placement games. I'm normally a diamond or master player at the end of the season so I definitely wasn't placed 1.5 tiers back from diamond.
The trials are absolute hell for solo q players. I finished second the first trial playing as a duo pretty much from the beginning cause the other person was paying attention when we respawned them and died to storm. As a duo we were cooking but died cause we didn’t have the best spot final circle. Then next game I’m one kp short. It’s basically gambling. Like with those two games I should have progressed. Then if the game decides you don’t get a full team in trials it still counts…
if you win in ur promo trails, that lp that u get over that game goes to ur rank, i won my gold to go into plat and i got th extra 300 lp with completing the trail. ( for the people wondering)
The big problem with teammates is most still don’t understand that fighting at the start of the match is screaming for a 3rd party and i have gotten 3x preds as teammates and they somehow seem to want to hot drop and die
I just dont know why they ever ruined ranked in the first place. it was perfectly fine before they hid all the sources of points, made a hidden MMR, and rewarded way too little for anything but placement.
Yeah, I don't get it either. Last I played was in season 15 and the ranked system seemed pretty good. To be honest right now I'm getting shreaded by well above average players in Bronze (was the same in Rookie, but got out finally), while in season 15 I only met this level of players in Plat. They messed this up big time. Just look at the player distribution: 44.5% in Rookie, 31% in Bronze, 16% in Silver... So that's 91.5% of players in the lowest 3 ranks. Of course I'm getting destroyed. I wonder how many of us will just give up the grind that has always been long, but now it feels like suffering as well.
Your tier list videos generally put me off but this one is a fair, well-structured take that I can agree with. I used to average Platinum 2-3 on Switch between Season 8 - 15 or so (crossplay on, solo queue). As soon as this rework came in, I'd place in Rookie and end in Silver. Thought that maybe I'd still be able to climb up since that's nothing new, but nope, danced between Bronze and Silver these past two seasons. This entire ladder system has been a failed attempt to recreate the flair of ALGS. Yes, endgames with 6 squads is insanely fun and chaotic, but getting there is a painful climb. From teammates hotdropping and dying in 18th to not playing ahead of ring, there are far more ways to die before 10th place than there are to get to 5th. And the game punishes you harder for it. I haven't faced a Pred squad but I've died to more Masters players while my rank explicitly states Bronze 1. What ranks are my teammates? Check the inspect profile on the main lobby, they're Rookie 2 or Bronze 4. I'm not any better but you can't tell me that my Plat ranking from Season 14 is causing me to die to people who average Diamond/Masters every season. Respawn messed up and have been doubling down on a worse system every season. It started with all that "we're changing our matchmaking system" dev blog, and now we're here. I lost 300LP just trying to get INTO Bronze via the Provisional system. Didn't win a game, had 3 kills sure, but couldn't break into Top 10 enough times. Blizzard just did a whole talk about the changes they'll be making for Overwatch. Doubt Respawn will follow suit.
This system is so frustrating in so many ways, playing with a friend in the same rank, getting more kills than him in most of the games, and still getting less to no elimination points, after the whole day we had a 200 lp gap. I am pretty sure we are equally skilled.
Regarding promotional trials. Got into one at silver 1, didn’t get a full squad. Left and it counted as a game. So no protection while playing for a rank up. System needs some rework.
I literally won a game before my promotion trial and rank back down because I couldn’t complete the challenges. Which in my opinion is crazy because even during the trial I was going plus; so not only do I not get to rank up after winning a game because of the trials, but I also get nothing for ranking up during the trials. This to me is kinda ridiculous and unfair especially to someone like me who either solos or duo queue in rank. To add, I haven’t played and a while now and stopped at D2.
As a solo player who is in silver 1 rn, first of all, trials are a absolute nightmare, teammates just randomly push a three stack every game or they just rat. Like I've reached diamond every split after season 11 and now I've have not been able to complete my trials twice and will proly fail the third time too because teammates don't do anything and force you to win as a solo or duo. Atleast I only lose 104 so it is easy to get back on trials.
I’m used to solo queueing but this season I’ve finally got some like minded teammates to play with and the difference in my gaming experience is like heaven and hell bro - not even kapping.
My teammates and I are still confused and ratting still reigns supreme. For some reason, in provisional matches, I would do the same as my teammates but get double to triple their points. I have a higher mmr than they do, my stats are better than theirs, but in prelims, I could get 0 kills and 0 assists and still get double their points. Then once provisional is over, they get skill ratings, and double my points, and I get 0 skill points. It is still stupid because I had a game where I got 1500 dmg, 5 kills, a win, and only got the win points and 30 elim points. Doesnt seem like anything has changed.
Im going for pred this season. Im solo queing. I am currently almost plat 1. I got placed in silver because my teammates were all extremely terrible low tier bronze and i was playing with 3 stack preds and it ruined my provisionals. I was masters last season since week 2 or 3. Im on track for pred still if i can get into d4 or d3 today, but the promotional matches are absolutely toxic and create a bad environment in the game.
I as a MOSTLY Solo player since season 0 I find this season Most Demanding (regular plat/diamond) Probably because of the MMR as you said, but the challenges I actually felt them as a good Idea. didn't have any trouble getting all challenges done from Bronze to SIlver and Silver to Gold... and In all this I solo Qeued.
They should take some pointer from elite que. And make trails just a bones points event after every 10 wins in silver to plat 15 wins in Dimond to pred for your next 2-3 games
😂 i quit playing ranked half way through last season i am a 7 time pred 3.6kd and had the same issues you discussed not that regular lobbies are any different but at least i can just play freely there
placed silver with a 2.56 kd solo queuing. this season alone is probably the hardest to solo que, i get placed with rookie bronze players dropping 100-300 dmg every game making me either have to carry or just die getting rolled by a better team three stacking. this season is bad especially for solo que players
Might be a bit crazy but i like cods wz ranked system it's straight foward with no hidden numbers, besides matchmaking and sbmm of course its not for the average player but it works on paper and in game, if they could fix the matchmaking and put you against players who are actually your skill and not people that are in that rank but are not your skill level
I've solo-queued this entire season. I do not get to play much but I've gone through every provisional about 6/7 times. I've gone against full stack current masters/preds (based on their banners) it makes me feel bad like why couldn't I climb through the lower ranks faster. I have noticed better team mates overall with this season, could just be luck of the draw.
You're last point is a MAJOR issue. I was in trials and was lucky to win the very 1st game with my duo doing so. He got 282 points for the kills/win. All I got was a bonus 250 for winning the trial. Not the 282+ points I would have gotten in the old systems we've always had. Being halfway to G3 would of been fantastic. It made winning and ranking up feel absolutely useless...
Before the placement style of ranked came in, I'd typically be Gold 1 and sometimes Plat 4. Right now I'm mostly having good matches in Bronze, but getting out of Rookie did take a good number of games. My KD the last few seasons just cracks an even 1, and I feel like a bunch of Gold/Plat players are also stuck in Bronze and Silver due to the trials. With my overall win rate in BR being around 5 or 7%, then having to get a win within 5 games means a win rate of 20% which is a big deal when you consider overall win rate. I feel like getting through Silver is going to be a big struggle now and that the only point to playing ranked is to not have your team mates quitting when they die. Wraiths in particular, obviously.
I just ranked as solo Q to Silver 4 and can't describe how much I had to do in game as I had s..t co-players and finished trials in 4th match, finished 2nd in the first match, ofcourse my mates didn't have any kills and I done it all but it is what it is, hope I will get better teamates now in Bronze and get over it in a week
That’s my main complaint about ranked this season is the trials. I’m a decent player but I solo queue a lot and not having control of your teammates sucks when you only have 5 games to work with.
My buddy lost about 250 points for failing bronze trials. I've had some strange experiences so far but it's been fun. One thing my other buddy found that was frustrating was that having really good games while in trials doesn't result in many points. Basically, we came 1st, 2nd, 1st in 3 matches. One friend was bronze 2 and got a total of over 800 points. The other only got 200 because the 1st win put him into trials, the 2nd place counted as a top 5, and then the second 1st place counted as a win to pass the trial. Also, I won a game with 10 kp and got 412 points. 150 for the win and the rest in bonuses.... So kills matter more from what I've seen
I've started ranked, got placed in Bronze I. I played a match with a friend, both my team mates died early so I clutched a 1v5 and got knocked out 13th. In the match summary, I got -18. 5 kills and 13th got me -18 points, my mate chuckled at me. 😆 Also failed a trial and got knocked down all the way back down, but I really wasn't worried about the trials cause I was just chilling with a buddy. I think trials is kinda busted but atleast I'm similar ranks to my friends lol 😅
Takes us way too long to climb honestly, I did many top1/top2 this season and back in season 12-13, you would climb probably one rank just by winning a game. Now I have to do 4-5 games wins with random players, and losing points every game, promotion trials and everything. Gotta have to be jobless to climb feels like and can't wait for the games to get harder and take more time to climb just a rank
The season before the entire mmr change was perfect. You could see how the kills affected your rank and placements. It was fully transparent. The only reason they made such a big change is because ppl in ranked were too aggressive or get third partied too much. Now its rat central, or now being I don't get elo cuz im fighting gods with baby tm8s. We complined too much and now they don't know what we want.
it also seems you get an extra trial each time you get back to trials. for example if you are trying to go from Silver 1 to Gold 4 and you fail trials once, the next time you get to trials you will have 6 chances...if you fail again and get back...the next time 7 chances...the next time etc. im not sure if there is a cap to it.
for me I'm a plat or Dimond level player and the provisional matches put me up against pred 3 stacks when I had rookie teammates and we just died and i ended up getting put into rookie 2
I feel the same to a point, but seriously solo que is ten times harder for us average players. I'm not a masters level player, never will be, best I can hope for is Diamond. But not from lack of skill, I mean I have a liftime k/d of 2.2, dropped 1560 kills with Wraith last season. I don't have a pre-made squad so it's a grind. Even more so now these last two seasons.
This is an objectif an honnest video, I am not playing rank this season just I can't always consistly have teammates, and I am absolutly not intersted with solo quing with this system, I just want to have fun in pubs, missing Arenas too
The promotional trails will kill this game for sure. Worst ranked season yet. 3 seasons of terrible ranked is crazy.😢 As soon as I get in my trails its like i get matched with the worst teammates. Its crazy i have been master 4 season in a row but stuck in silver 1. Wtf?
From silver to Gold I reset up to 7 games always resetting 6 points off then I stacked and finally got a win. Every time I soloed I got gold/plat ranked mmr trials in silver. Big issue as you've said is Promos actually need to be with other teammates that are doing exactly the same ranked promos. Currently you'll have players playing for different trials requirements depending rank. Had players that are not even in trials so taking different approach to the game because placement with 1/2 kills is still viable outside of trials.
I always share your videos on stuff like this as I always agree with your takes and the Devs at respawn need to see what they've done to the system for every type of player from stacks to solos they really need to find a way to balance it fairly because currently it's just not it.
Rank is going to be a grind for me again because i ened up with teamates that want to push and we get third partied and lose in 15 spot. Even with 2 kills an 1 assistant, you get negative. After the promotion deal, you may end up as rookie. Which most of us aren't a rookie. Sliver and bronze is where most should be
I think they did this trials thing to combat the whole "sitting in the ring till final zone" stuff. However before this season even started I thought this was a bad idea because as mentioned in the vid, stacking is one thing and still has it's issues but solo queuing and trying to trials seems super unfair in a fashion. Plus the fact that there are SOOOOOOOOO many variables that are RnG that you might not be able to complete a trial for so many different reasons. Especially the higher you go. I don't think trials were a good idea all around but a hard counter to the ring camp strat from the last two seasons, problem is it makes the majority of the rest of the game kinda "Suffer" a bit. Even some of the pros seem to be having a hard time of it. The game is too volatile and situational to have a set in stone type of trial/objective like that especially in a ranked mode.
This would be fine if we had a mozambique as starting weapon, there were much less "bad" weapons on the ground and those weapons were more evenly distributed. Sometimes I go through multiple large buildings and only find pistols, while my teammates and enemies find actual weapons and better shields. So the game is too RNG heavy IMO.
I only began playing ranked very recently and I’ve pretty consistently been in mid-high bronze. As in highest I’ve ever gotten is silver 5, four seasons ago. I very very consistently get matched with players who are not just bronze but clearly people who are in their first few games ever. Like default beginner legends with double digit kills at most and don’t know tons of mechanics such as Tridents and Gravity Cannons. I usually go through these teams for around 5 rounds, doing mediocre or sometimes decent and then I’ll randomly get matched with people who are easily at least platinum or masters rank in skill. Only to go back to normal right after. I’m not totally complaining, solo-queue bronze I should expect this, but it does get really obnoxious to consistently be doing a ton better than teammates who don’t even run from the ring.
my experience with trials is that i am playing MUCH higher level players, i was in rookie foing into bronze playing against plats while most of my games it would be silver or gold before then
I only lose 1 lol for failing my trials. Meaning I can just rat to be back in them. It’s a none issue. Also, while in gold, I’ve been paired with others in their trials while solo queuing.
I play a ton of ranked rocket league and have been looking to grind ranked apex, but I feel like I can never move up in rank. I won two of my provisional games and had multiple top 3 finishes averaging probably 3-6 kills a game and got rookie 3, and I played around 30-40 games at the end of last season and was rookie 3 then too but the champion is always some 10k kill player who dogs the whole lobby
I for one have noticed that, if I get one game I do good, I get matched with bad teammates usually. After 2 maybe 3 bad games, I get a good team. I barely play apex. I obviously started rookie. During my promotion, i got teamed up with a gold 2 and a silver 1. And the people we lost to I think were plat and were the champions with triple master badges. So idk wtf is hapoening. But now Im bronze, and, the lobbies remind me of plat lobbies in season 14 or 15, last time I played. Update: I am now Gold and still find preds and diamonds and masters. But for some reason, less than in rookie.
Also when I lost my first promo trial, I lost I believe like 20 maybe 30 points. Second trial I passed it. But, I just got back in apex so that was in rookie rank.
I don’t understand how they think this makes sense. The point of ranked is to RANK UP & prove yourself against increasingly difficult competition. But if I’m playing sweats in bronze then like… I just don’t get it
They were already giving us teammates of different ranks. You're also probably in the highest MMR as well. The skill "buckets" they use are way to wide when it comes to skill. In my opinion, they need to just go back to the previous rank systems, and add time to the queue to make sure you're playing players in your rank. It's weird that you can be in silver but be playing the best players in the world. The point of a rank is to rank up so it's kind of strange being in the second lowest rank but still playing people that are the best

Had a game 2 seasons ago when everyone was masters, I was in masters and chatting with a teammate, he asked what rank I was, I told him masters, he was in bronze. The people we were up against were all diamond or above while I had one bronze teammate and the other said he was in gold. these ranked changes just feel dumb and are hurting the game, but Respawn keeps trying to fix this system that is flawed in it's very core. I generally don't hate on respawn for most changes since I know EA is the one in charge and forces a lot of the bad ones like the 160 dollar PK skin, but I believe this is entirely just respawns fault.
Provisional is highly unbalanced as in my first 10 matches of ranked i gained nearly 3500 lp while my teammates who did only slightly worse got barely half of that. Could you help explain how that works more I also love your videos.@@MangosInTrees
I think everyone can agree that the absolute biggest frustration is just the lack of transparency. It just made more sense to me that during a game, I knew exactly how much I'd lose or gain if i were to die at that exact moment. Promotional trials can be a good thing but not everyone is going to be on the trials, even if you 3 stack.
You are right for trials, but at least, in 3 stacks, you can believe your teammates will help you accomplish the missions so you will do for them when their trial time will come. It is almost impossible to have the same experience in SoloQueing.
Don't rely on others. Develop your skills. I solo Q to diamond every season and I don't even grind. If you don't even know how much lp you get at what placement then bro. You need to stop playing rank. 😂🤦 people like you seriously need to up your game IQ

Ranking up has been a huge pain since they made -50lp cost for all ranks. As someone who doesn't play the game too much back then I could rank up if I didn't perform bad (for lower ranks). But after they made that change what is the point of ranking up. Some of the matches you lose straight 50-30 lp and other matches you perform decent or good and get 10-20lp. It's no longer about individual performance its about grinding hours and getting lucky in some games. This system doesn't respect the time of the casual ranked players.

Yesterday I had a game with 7 kills and 2 assist placed 7th or so and gained 60 points.
The very next game was a sweat fest with preds and stacks and I placed 3rd with 1 kill I think and also 60 points. I just turned the game off afterwards.

I think i agree with most of what you said. For me its just that the hidden mmr isn't working like they say it is, its not even about my teammates it's about me. I'm not that great a player and to go up against people in the highest rank doesn't feel good, especially when its in placements or silver. The highest I've ever been is d2, and that was multiple seasons ago. So what data are they getting that tells them i need to be in these games...
I have the same experience as you in pubs. I constantly die against preds/masters/ 4K damages/20 kills badges players and my higher rank (apart from season 17) was plat 3. I am a very average player with no real movement techs and not aiming like a god so I don't understand why the system is always mathmaking me in these lobbies. Mostly also as I see is that, from my team, I make the biggest damage or amount of kills very often but, on the other hand, I can have 20 games in a row dying from the first encounter without even being able to hit a single shot. I have tons of screenshots showing my point here. I think it is unfair and not honest to not have a clear explanation how the MMR/SBMM is working. And I think it is even worst this season. I have a global D/K of 0,77 and this season I am turning at around 0,6 since I'm always matched with really higher skill levels players. Don't understanding why is really frustrating and I am clearly wondering if I will not just simply quit this game although I really appreciate the lore, the movement and the overall mechanics of this game. What a pity....
@awakeant8079 Absolutely agree with everything you've said here. Season 17 was my first season. While I'm getting better every Season, I can't move like I want and my aim is average at best.. I'm trying to compensate with learning to play cover, when to push, how to reset, reading the fights.. Etc
All of that only helps so much when you are constantly running into people who can just sail over your head while beaming you from one wall jump and then taking your teamate down to boot.. I want to keep playing amd I do enjoy the game but part of me feels like I should just stop because I'll NEVER be able to play at the level of those that keep sheeting on me.. Obviously I was playing exceptionally well, but this season I’m back down to a 1 KD and it’s been like a week. I have no idea what the fuck is going on, most gunfights aren’t even competitive. Just know you aren’t alone.
Playing Preds early in the season was a normal thing for years in Apex. The first couple weeks are always congested with Preds and the really sweaty players trying to break out. But with the new SBMM, good players are playing Preds every single lobby for the entire season, whether you’re Silver or in Diamond. I can’t think of anything more stressful to play than this new system of ranked Apex. And, to make things even more lopsided, if you are Pred mmr and want to play with your lower skilled buddies, they’re going to get absolutely rolled by the multiple Pred squads in the lobby. That’s no fun for anyone.
Right. The start of seasons were a mess in the old system, but it pretty quickly stabilized over the first week or so. In this world, your rank really and truly has correlation to skill - I’m a very average player and was in plat last season watching CZcamsrs also in plat. There’s absolutely no way we’re even close to the same skill level. Respawn just made it so that anyone can grind to the higher levels if they want to invest the time, and that just takes all the fun out of the system for me.

My buddy and I don't even play ranked anymore. we could casually get into plat and then grind to diamond if we had time. We would usually only play one night a week for a few hours, maybe two nights if it lined up. I would be able to solo queue to diamond from plat4 if he couldn't play, and I made it to masters in S12 (i know i know). This season we were placed in bronze 2, and literally every game we died to triple stacked masters/preds. Ranked isn't sweaty for us anymore; it's impossible, and for what? A banner frame and badge? Pass.
Yeah, I think you've absolutely nailed it with this summary. As a pretty bad, casual solo player, the game is already stacked against me (which I can take) but all these systems are beginning to feel like extra BS piling on top.
Any system like this, in a game like this, HAS to feel addictive. It has to pull you back for one more go and whilst the game itself always does that, the layering of these obscure systems does the absolute opposite.
The MMR changes have been brutal since they were introduced, but the promotional trials might as well be considered the nail in the coffin for solo queue players. It's hard enough to get random teammates on the same page every single match, never mind getting them on the same page when it comes to playing with promotional objectives in mind.
Yeah the only tolerable thing is mixtape and if for some reason some solo queuer hates mixtape then the game is basically unplayable right now unless you have a severe masochistic streak.

I came back to the game ever since cross progression started (I was on PS4 in the past and I would never start over... I had a ton of skins) and I only play unranked... besides nobody using mics the games are fun and very action packed without needing to sweat my balls off...

@@iTuber012 Yep agreed. I uninstalled when they made ranked all about placement because the pros liked it. The game then turned into 20 minutes of hiding before one big fight at the end of each game with 10 rats. Not fun.
Me and a friend were talking about trying the rankeds again... but after seeing what those missions would add to maintain the rank and with the luck we have with the randoms we decided to just stay in pubs
you dont need to rely on randoms i mean, 2vs3 is enough, trials are a pain in the ass you get kills or top 5, sometimes is hard to get both, winnuig also can happen
great video Mango. I hope the Devs take into consideration all of the well thought out points you've made here. If we absolutely have to stick with the trials method instead of going back to what we used to have with a ranked system and everything was transparent, then I would like to see a change made where once you hit tier 1 of your current division, the "trials" immediately start. The challenge is to get 1000 LP plus either win 1 game or top 10 and 3 kills x3 times. You have unlimited games to achieve this but you do not progress until you get 1000 LP and complete one of the challenges. The only way it resets is if you fall to tier 2. I feel like this is a reasonable middle ground to where things are currently at. Im a solo queue diamond player. Ive hit diamond pretty much every season Ive played since season 1. I failed my gold trials 5 or 6 times before I was able to pass with the 3 kills/top 10 x 3 games and it feels really bad to perform well, even place 2nd multiple times and still fail to get promoted to my next division

The thing they need to fix most is the matchmaking. For ranked and pubs. I am constantly matched when playing solo with people that are just terrible. I don't claim to be a pro but I have basic game sense. These guys are shooting at the floor lifelines that don't ever heal. There was a fuse that didn't even use one knuckle cluster the whole match. Please for the love of God, bring a solo mode or fix the damn matchmaking
I AGREE 100% , the matchmaking sucks, im also masters/ diamond and 99% of my games im the best player in the team and on top of that im placed in silver rank but playing vs preds and masters with 30k kills , if im silver rank this season i should be playing against silver level of skill players no preds

This was a really nice and well put together video.
Something tells me that provisional matches are not only being weighted by internal MMR, but also rather previous ranked season performances. I ended up finishing Rookie I out of provisionals, with the best person on our squad finishing Bronze II -- a friend from outside of our squad who is unarguably weaker as a player managed to get out of provisionals Silver II -- me and my squadmates did not really do ranked last season on account of being really strapped for time and finished in Bronze/Silver, respectively, while our friend who played the entire time managed to get to Plat II. I've run into players who have participated in Challenger Circuit finals and have put up a reasonable fight against them, which ideally should say that I'm really not in the lower echelon of players.
I feel like this is inherently where the problem lies: provisionals better than before, but they're definitely not using internal MMR enough. If my public lobbies are putting me with heavily populated Diamond+ players (and this was the case pre-S17 as well), I would think that provisionals would aim to place me somewhere in upper silver/lower gold to factor that 1.5 tier drop to imply that I'm at least Platinum or Diamond. But it doesn't seem to work that way. I think part of Respawn's shtick here too is player retention. Ironically, the grindy nature of S18 coupled with being strapped on time made me want to play the season, haha
My squadmates and I plan on actually going in this season; we'll see how things go.
In my opinion , winning should only be a trial for Plat diamond. Hopefully they add solo vs squad trials, because solo can be rng

I literally cannot play pubs without having a pred champion or a masters champion. My highest rank ever is diamond 3 about 10 seasons ago. When I’m playing ranked I see a lot of jumps comparing my teammates to the champion squad/squad who kills us. Getting ran down in rookie by previous diamond+ is overwhelming at times but I still play the game cause… I love it even though I hate it. Thanks for articulating a lot of thoughts I wasn’t able to on this season and last seasons ranked modes!
Fully agree with everything you’ve said. The way ranked has been in the past 3 seasons since the LP change it’s only gone down hill from there. They need to clean up the mess they have made

This season has been the sweatiest so far. Normally in Plat/Diamond lobbied and I struggled to get out of bronze. Feel like I’m getting lazered all the time, playing against coordinated 3 stacks. Not sure how much I’ll keep playing, it’s too frustrating getting stomped on constantly.
I mainly solo queue and i recently completed my promo trial matches to move from rookie I -> Bronze IV shortly after completing my preliminary matches. My first match i placed top 10 and achieved the 3 kill requirement, my next 3 matches my teammates were awful and we placed 11th twice & then 12th in my 4th math. In my last promo match I knew it was an all or nothing situation in which i had to win to move forward. I demonstrated why I deserve to move up in all of these matches, but this last one I got incredibly lucky multiple times despite one of my teammates being terrible and one being of equal skill. My stats at the end of the game after winning, as pretty much a two man squad, were 2 respawns, 3 revives, 6 eliminations, 2 assists, 7 knocks, 1850 damage, and I placed 1/20. My point being that even if i didn’t win that match, but played incredibly well in it along with my other 4 matches despite having bad teammates who abandoned once downed and ran straight into fights alone, I believe I should easily be moved up to bronze IV anyway. 5 promo matches is too few for a true testament of skill level. The amount of times your team goes to an overpopulated drop point and dies immediately is at least 25% of the time you solo queue and i believe that is even an underestimate.
I haven't played this game since last season, at least not very much. Last season I was in Gold 1/2 for a total of a month and a half. That pissed me off so badly lol, thank you for making this video, so I know whether or not to come back to grinding ranked
You hit the nail on the head, brother. I started grinding ranked a couple weeks ago. I get that I was late to the grind, but since I hit silver 1, I get decent teammates once every 15 games or so, and when i do, I'm hesitant jump into fights with them before 10th place because of how the last 10+ matches have gone. It's a lose lose situation. Also the teammates I'm getting don't have nearly as much time in the game as I do meanwhile the enemies have 4k damage badges and 5,000+ kills on their selected legends. Usually a 3 stack of any of the following: Horizon
Conduit
Revenant
Catalyst
or Loba
I'm almost relieved when I see an Octane or Wraith nowadays because I know they're a fellow solo queuer
As a solo queue no name player, it’s been difficult. As a master player, in facing 3 stack preds like WTP, Sang, diffq, and getting paired with low level/low IQ player that W key to die and then blame you.
These same issues have been around sense day 1. My teammates are always clueless, and the enemy team to win is usually 3 stacked master/press.

As mostly soloq diamond player(a few times master) I always had the experience that for teammates I mostly got low level account players, bronze/silver/gold/plat players, veil mostly going up against diamond(not hardstock dia 4 players) and above level players, as well as a good amount of duo/3 stacks! This has always been the case for me no matter what ranked system they have had in place, and is part of the reason I got tired of soloq and playing apex in general!
I've been struggling to find meaningful changes from last season but maybe that's just me. There still next to no kp bonuses, the mmr is still excruciating, and top 10 still feels like the only thing that matters.
Really just think we could go back to the structure of early seasons, backtrack a little from season 12 (when many diamond level players ranked into Masters), and it would solve almost all of the problems. You knew what you had to do to rank up, you could break even despite queueing into bad teammates, and players were engaged (not ratting out whole games). At lower ranks, the ALGS-like rubric just doesn't accurately assess players.
My "favorite" part about solo Q ranked this season is, when you enter the promo trials with the 5 attempts and you get a match with only one teammate and then he leaves, probably cuz his friend crashed and can't come back... don't wanna even talk about the old issues like packet loss or skill diff.
So, the first couple days, I got myself into bronze 2 when my placements were done, so it didn’t take long of getting good games with actually solid teammates who knew how to work off my back at times like I was with them, it felt like really solid matchmaking, and I flew up to the the end of bronze 1 and was met with my trial. Ever since I’ve gotten into my trials, the matchmaking that I was getting is gone. I’m getting teammates who throw before we even land on the ground or in the very first fight we engage. I always end up being left having to 1v3 or mission impossible my way to crafting banners, and I usually just end up getting killed. It’s been really frustrating cause I know those teammates probably weren’t on their trial so they didn’t need to win that game, which isn’t really their fault, but I think if they’re gonna add a system like this it should be trying to match you with at least teammates that have their trial unlocked so you can all be on the same page
My provisional matches were just a bunch of guys dropping hot and running into fights alone with white shields and a P2020. I 'think' I should be around the platinum level ( I have been there before) but I got dropped all the way down to rookie II. I knew this was going to happen after the first few rounds of solo queueing with Rambo.
I’ve been playing since season one. I would love to see a lot of what he touched on in the video worked on in the Apex definitely are used to be way different grinding, rank, season, 1 2 3

When the season started and I was placed in bronze 1, during my promo trials, I got haaaaardstuck bronze for about 2 weeks because my teammates were dropping solo and I couldn’t fight 3 stack preds… by myself. Also, every time I would fail a bunch of my promo trials, I would win the next game (non-promo) which was full of players who peaked at gold or silver the previous season.
The only way to mitigate the frozen points during trial is to let you keep the accumulated points thru the trial if you succeed. If you fail and have to work your way back you lose those accumulated points.
Ranked use to be my preferred game mode only issue with it before was that people were kill hungry instead of strategic, and 3 stacking even when you were playing with low skilled teammates gave you the top 1 % of players. In an effort to fix that they have broken the mode beyond repair. Getting preds in all my matches with like minimum 15k kills while I have like 8k total.
Didn't they say they wanted Ranked to be more casual? They wanted to tone down ratting, but made a system where you have to get this many kills/assists and then rat to this placement to get to the next ranked. I hate playing pubs because of the match making, but now I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep playing the game at all
in the lobby you can inspect your last teammates to see what rank they are, but people turn off the feature that lets its how up some sometimes you cant see (i've been getting bronze and rookie when im gold)
One big issue for many season im not sure about this one cause i was taking a break from ranked is that there is no room to improve you either fight people far better than you or people far worse and you end up getting stuck.
I have solo queued every season and usually handle it just fine, but this has been one of the worst ones in a long time from how many players are splitting off immediately or running away from the team. Even worse than it was a couple seasons ago with valks hiding in trees
I thought promotional trials would be good but it seems like people only put any effort in DURING their trial and are still ratting to the top of each rank
This is what I said before the system was put in place. People will still rat tip you have to rank up and then in the rank up will mostly rat till top 10 still before doing anything.
8:29 this is so true I solo Que because I have no one to play with and I was unable to to finish the trial because I was getting top ten or getting second place untill I had these two amazing ransoms and we got second and we played agian and won
To put in perspective for an average ranked player. I usually make diamond or high diamond (master in the season that didn't count). I'm stuck in freaking bronze and man it's as sweaty as diamond lobbies getting beamed before I get a chance to shoot. I remember there being progression getting harder as you go, but now it's like every rank is the same rank...

I've been playing for a month now, and I just got to 50 to get into rank, and in my opinion, it seems like everyone who plays has a problem with something, pros vs cas, pc vs controller so on and so forth, I just play to play and to get better, yeah I solo don't know anyone who plays so kinda stuck, but I think we can all agree on is the cheaters and ratters make it suck for everyone, we are just here to have fun or at least I am, great vid, keep it up
I'm kind of curious how this system will work later on. If it really eliminates all the rats, then I think they have somehow made a point. If they start increasing the elim bonuses and bring back the transparency of the good old days... *pray*.
I really like the current end games in Ranked, but I'm not sure if this is due to the start of the season or the new system (guess it's the first one, but Im still hoping).
I started playing apex in season 17 then played rank in season 18. I thought ranked was flawed in many ways but one way I thought they could've helped the system was making something similar to promotion trails but instead throughout the duration of your time in that tier. FOR EXAMPLE anything like survival duration, average damage, K/D, kills with multiple guns, win rate/average game placement, healing/rez/respawns, assist, etc. There's something that clearly separates each rank from each other. For example let's say Master players average a K/D of 2.0, average 1,500 damage, and places top 8 on average. If you don't meet or exceed in most of whatever the benchmarks are for your rank you shouldn't rank up, regardless of your LP. I just think this will make ranked a bit more cohesive because when I think of an Apex Predator I think of someone who can do it all and exceeds in a lot of skills. But when they put so much emphasis on placement you see that a person can rank up highly even though they're only good at playing hide and seek or exploiting the heat shields.
Honestly as a solo queue conduit main i've realized 3 things. First my teamates might as well be hotdropping bots. Second no matter how good i do with my support character supporting my team i get no rewards or LP if anything im punished by playing support cause i dont get jack for shielding and or healing my team or revives while there are LP rewards for killing. Third most of your LP gain comes from how long you last and what you place. I went a 3 kill game with multiple assist and got 16LP it is litterally safer and better in the long run to hide! Alot of people have noticed this since half the lobby stays on the edge of the map now. There needs to bea healthy mix of how LP is gained so that one style of play isnt the only play worth it.
This makes so much sense for what I’ve been experiencing. Ranked has been terrible for me as a new-ish player. Also, after on ranked game I got like 4k LP (I think, I know it was an absurd amount) while my teammates got a usual amount. Not sure why.

I got no points in my last placement game because I was in bronze 1, so the trials kicked in even though they said that trials wouldnt affect those games. Also last season I was placed in silver 2 and we won more games this season in the placement games. I'm normally a diamond or master player at the end of the season so I definitely wasn't placed 1.5 tiers back from diamond.
The trials are absolute hell for solo q players. I finished second the first trial playing as a duo pretty much from the beginning cause the other person was paying attention when we respawned them and died to storm. As a duo we were cooking but died cause we didn’t have the best spot final circle. Then next game I’m one kp short. It’s basically gambling. Like with those two games I should have progressed. Then if the game decides you don’t get a full team in trials it still counts…

if you win in ur promo trails, that lp that u get over that game goes to ur rank, i won my gold to go into plat and i got th extra 300 lp with completing the trail. ( for the people wondering)
The big problem with teammates is most still don’t understand that fighting at the start of the match is screaming for a 3rd party and i have gotten 3x preds as teammates and they somehow seem to want to hot drop and die
I just dont know why they ever ruined ranked in the first place. it was perfectly fine before they hid all the sources of points, made a hidden MMR, and rewarded way too little for anything but placement.
Yeah, I don't get it either. Last I played was in season 15 and the ranked system seemed pretty good. To be honest right now I'm getting shreaded by well above average players in Bronze (was the same in Rookie, but got out finally), while in season 15 I only met this level of players in Plat. They messed this up big time. Just look at the player distribution: 44.5% in Rookie, 31% in Bronze, 16% in Silver... So that's 91.5% of players in the lowest 3 ranks. Of course I'm getting destroyed. I wonder how many of us will just give up the grind that has always been long, but now it feels like suffering as well.
Your tier list videos generally put me off but this one is a fair, well-structured take that I can agree with.
I used to average Platinum 2-3 on Switch between Season 8 - 15 or so (crossplay on, solo queue). As soon as this rework came in, I'd place in Rookie and end in Silver. Thought that maybe I'd still be able to climb up since that's nothing new, but nope, danced between Bronze and Silver these past two seasons.
This entire ladder system has been a failed attempt to recreate the flair of ALGS. Yes, endgames with 6 squads is insanely fun and chaotic, but getting there is a painful climb. From teammates hotdropping and dying in 18th to not playing ahead of ring, there are far more ways to die before 10th place than there are to get to 5th. And the game punishes you harder for it. I haven't faced a Pred squad but I've died to more Masters players while my rank explicitly states Bronze 1. What ranks are my teammates? Check the inspect profile on the main lobby, they're Rookie 2 or Bronze 4. I'm not any better but you can't tell me that my Plat ranking from Season 14 is causing me to die to people who average Diamond/Masters every season.
Respawn messed up and have been doubling down on a worse system every season. It started with all that "we're changing our matchmaking system" dev blog, and now we're here. I lost 300LP just trying to get INTO Bronze via the Provisional system. Didn't win a game, had 3 kills sure, but couldn't break into Top 10 enough times.
Blizzard just did a whole talk about the changes they'll be making for Overwatch. Doubt Respawn will follow suit.
In my promo trials I failed my first and lost 900 or so then my friend lost his on got a 100 or 200 lp reduction which is absolutely wild
This system is so frustrating in so many ways, playing with a friend in the same rank, getting more kills than him in most of the games, and still getting less to no elimination points, after the whole day we had a 200 lp gap. I am pretty sure we are equally skilled.
Regarding promotional trials. Got into one at silver 1, didn’t get a full squad. Left and it counted as a game. So no protection while playing for a rank up. System needs some rework.
I literally won a game before my promotion trial and rank back down because I couldn’t complete the challenges. Which in my opinion is crazy because even during the trial I was going plus; so not only do I not get to rank up after winning a game because of the trials, but I also get nothing for ranking up during the trials. This to me is kinda ridiculous and unfair especially to someone like me who either solos or duo queue in rank. To add, I haven’t played and a while now and stopped at D2.
As a solo player who is in silver 1 rn, first of all, trials are a absolute nightmare, teammates just randomly push a three stack every game or they just rat. Like I've reached diamond every split after season 11 and now I've have not been able to complete my trials twice and will proly fail the third time too because teammates don't do anything and force you to win as a solo or duo. Atleast I only lose 104 so it is easy to get back on trials.
I’m used to solo queueing but this season I’ve finally got some like minded teammates to play with and the difference in my gaming experience is like heaven and hell bro - not even kapping.
My teammates and I are still confused and ratting still reigns supreme. For some reason, in provisional matches, I would do the same as my teammates but get double to triple their points. I have a higher mmr than they do, my stats are better than theirs, but in prelims, I could get 0 kills and 0 assists and still get double their points. Then once provisional is over, they get skill ratings, and double my points, and I get 0 skill points. It is still stupid because I had a game where I got 1500 dmg, 5 kills, a win, and only got the win points and 30 elim points. Doesnt seem like anything has changed.
Just reward kills&assists, as they started to do. I used to lose 50 points even though I have 4-5 kills, which is insane.
Im going for pred this season. Im solo queing. I am currently almost plat 1. I got placed in silver because my teammates were all extremely terrible low tier bronze and i was playing with 3 stack preds and it ruined my provisionals. I was masters last season since week 2 or 3. Im on track for pred still if i can get into d4 or d3 today, but the promotional matches are absolutely toxic and create a bad environment in the game.
I as a MOSTLY Solo player since season 0 I find this season Most Demanding (regular plat/diamond) Probably because of the MMR as you said, but the challenges I actually felt them as a good Idea. didn't have any trouble getting all challenges done from Bronze to SIlver and Silver to Gold... and In all this I solo Qeued.
They should take some pointer from elite que. And make trails just a bones points event after every 10 wins in silver to plat 15 wins in Dimond to pred for your next 2-3 games
😂 i quit playing ranked half way through last season i am a 7 time pred 3.6kd and had the same issues you discussed not that regular lobbies are any different but at least i can just play freely there
Good thing about trial is that player should not be able to rat to pred or master if the requirement alway includes kills in both options.
placed silver with a 2.56 kd solo queuing. this season alone is probably the hardest to solo que, i get placed with rookie bronze players dropping 100-300 dmg every game making me either have to carry or just die getting rolled by a better team three stacking. this season is bad especially for solo que players
Might be a bit crazy but i like cods wz ranked system it's straight foward with no hidden numbers, besides matchmaking and sbmm of course its not for the average player but it works on paper and in game, if they could fix the matchmaking and put you against players who are actually your skill and not people that are in that rank but are not your skill level
I've solo-queued this entire season. I do not get to play much but I've gone through every provisional about 6/7 times. I've gone against full stack current masters/preds (based on their banners) it makes me feel bad like why couldn't I climb through the lower ranks faster. I have noticed better team mates overall with this season, could just be luck of the draw.
You're last point is a MAJOR issue. I was in trials and was lucky to win the very 1st game with my duo doing so. He got 282 points for the kills/win. All I got was a bonus 250 for winning the trial. Not the 282+ points I would have gotten in the old systems we've always had. Being halfway to G3 would of been fantastic. It made winning and ranking up feel absolutely useless...
Before the placement style of ranked came in, I'd typically be Gold 1 and sometimes Plat 4.
Right now I'm mostly having good matches in Bronze, but getting out of Rookie did take a good number of games. My KD the last few seasons just cracks an even 1, and I feel like a bunch of Gold/Plat players are also stuck in Bronze and Silver due to the trials.
With my overall win rate in BR being around 5 or 7%, then having to get a win within 5 games means a win rate of 20% which is a big deal when you consider overall win rate. I feel like getting through Silver is going to be a big struggle now and that the only point to playing ranked is to not have your team mates quitting when they die.

I just ranked as solo Q to Silver 4 and can't describe how much I had to do in game as I had s..t co-players and finished trials in 4th match, finished 2nd in the first match, ofcourse my mates didn't have any kills and I done it all but it is what it is, hope I will get better teamates now in Bronze and get over it in a week

That’s my main complaint about ranked this season is the trials. I’m a decent player but I solo queue a lot and not having control of your teammates sucks when you only have 5 games to work with.
My buddy lost about 250 points for failing bronze trials.
I've had some strange experiences so far but it's been fun. One thing my other buddy found that was frustrating was that having really good games while in trials doesn't result in many points. Basically, we came 1st, 2nd, 1st in 3 matches. One friend was bronze 2 and got a total of over 800 points. The other only got 200 because the 1st win put him into trials, the 2nd place counted as a top 5, and then the second 1st place counted as a win to pass the trial.
Also, I won a game with 10 kp and got 412 points. 150 for the win and the rest in bonuses.... So kills matter more from what I've seen
I've started ranked, got placed in Bronze I. I played a match with a friend, both my team mates died early so I clutched a 1v5 and got knocked out 13th. In the match summary, I got -18. 5 kills and 13th got me -18 points, my mate chuckled at me. 😆 Also failed a trial and got knocked down all the way back down, but I really wasn't worried about the trials cause I was just chilling with a buddy. I think trials is kinda busted but atleast I'm similar ranks to my friends lol 😅
Takes us way too long to climb honestly, I did many top1/top2 this season and back in season 12-13, you would climb probably one rank just by winning a game. Now I have to do 4-5 games wins with random players, and losing points every game, promotion trials and everything. Gotta have to be jobless to climb feels like and can't wait for the games to get harder and take more time to climb just a rank
Respawn please add a solo queue mode to pubs, ranked, or both, a lot of players will thank you
The season before the entire mmr change was perfect. You could see how the kills affected your rank and placements. It was fully transparent. The only reason they made such a big change is because ppl in ranked were too aggressive or get third partied too much. Now its rat central, or now being I don't get elo cuz im fighting gods with baby tm8s. We complined too much and now they don't know what we want.
it also seems you get an extra trial each time you get back to trials. for example if you are trying to go from Silver 1 to Gold 4 and you fail trials once, the next time you get to trials you will have 6 chances...if you fail again and get back...the next time 7 chances...the next time etc. im not sure if there is a cap to it.
for me I'm a plat or Dimond level player and the provisional matches put me up against pred 3 stacks when I had rookie teammates and we just died and i ended up getting put into rookie 2
I feel the same to a point, but seriously solo que is ten times harder for us average players. I'm not a masters level player, never will be, best I can hope for is Diamond. But not from lack of skill, I mean I have a liftime k/d of 2.2, dropped 1560 kills with Wraith last season. I don't have a pre-made squad so it's a grind. Even more so now these last two seasons.

The promotional trails will kill this game for sure. Worst ranked season yet. 3 seasons of terrible ranked is crazy.😢 As soon as I get in my trails its like i get matched with the worst teammates. Its crazy i have been master 4 season in a row but stuck in silver 1. Wtf?
From silver to Gold I reset up to 7 games always resetting 6 points off then I stacked and finally got a win. Every time I soloed I got gold/plat ranked mmr trials in silver. Big issue as you've said is Promos actually need to be with other teammates that are doing exactly the same ranked promos. Currently you'll have players playing for different trials requirements depending rank. Had players that are not even in trials so taking different approach to the game because placement with 1/2 kills is still viable outside of trials.
I always share your videos on stuff like this as I always agree with your takes and the Devs at respawn need to see what they've done to the system for every type of player from stacks to solos they really need to find a way to balance it fairly because currently it's just not it.

Rank is going to be a grind for me again because i ened up with teamates that want to push and we get third partied and lose in 15 spot. Even with 2 kills an 1 assistant, you get negative. After the promotion deal, you may end up as rookie. Which most of us aren't a rookie. Sliver and bronze is where most should be
I think they did this trials thing to combat the whole "sitting in the ring till final zone" stuff. However before this season even started I thought this was a bad idea because as mentioned in the vid, stacking is one thing and still has it's issues but solo queuing and trying to trials seems super unfair in a fashion. Plus the fact that there are SOOOOOOOOO many variables that are RnG that you might not be able to complete a trial for so many different reasons. Especially the higher you go. I don't think trials were a good idea all around but a hard counter to the ring camp strat from the last two seasons, problem is it makes the majority of the rest of the game kinda "Suffer" a bit. Even some of the pros seem to be having a hard time of it. The game is too volatile and situational to have a set in stone type of trial/objective like that especially in a ranked mode.
This would be fine if we had a mozambique as starting weapon, there were much less "bad" weapons on the ground and those weapons were more evenly distributed. Sometimes I go through multiple large buildings and only find pistols, while my teammates and enemies find actual weapons and better shields. So the game is too RNG heavy IMO.
I only began playing ranked very recently and I’ve pretty consistently been in mid-high bronze. As in highest I’ve ever gotten is silver 5, four seasons ago.
I very very consistently get matched with players who are not just bronze but clearly people who are in their first few games ever. Like default beginner legends with double digit kills at most and don’t know tons of mechanics such as Tridents and Gravity Cannons. I usually go through these teams for around 5 rounds, doing mediocre or sometimes decent and then I’ll randomly get matched with people who are easily at least platinum or masters rank in skill. Only to go back to normal right after.
I’m not totally complaining, solo-queue bronze I should expect this, but it does get really obnoxious to consistently be doing a ton better than teammates who don’t even run from the ring.
my experience with trials is that i am playing MUCH higher level players, i was in rookie foing into bronze playing against plats while most of my games it would be silver or gold before then
I only lose 1 lol for failing my trials. Meaning I can just rat to be back in them. It’s a none issue.
Also, while in gold, I’ve been paired with others in their trials while solo queuing.
I play a ton of ranked rocket league and have been looking to grind ranked apex, but I feel like I can never move up in rank. I won two of my provisional games and had multiple top 3 finishes averaging probably 3-6 kills a game and got rookie 3, and I played around 30-40 games at the end of last season and was rookie 3 then too but the champion is always some 10k kill player who dogs the whole lobby
I for one have noticed that, if I get one game I do good, I get matched with bad teammates usually. After 2 maybe 3 bad games, I get a good team. I barely play apex. I obviously started rookie. During my promotion, i got teamed up with a gold 2 and a silver 1. And the people we lost to I think were plat and were the champions with triple master badges. So idk wtf is hapoening. But now Im bronze, and, the lobbies remind me of plat lobbies in season 14 or 15, last time I played.
Update: I am now Gold and still find preds and diamonds and masters. But for some reason, less than in rookie.
Also when I lost my first promo trial, I lost I believe like 20 maybe 30 points. Second trial I passed it. But, I just got back in apex so that was in rookie rank.
I don’t understand how they think this makes sense. The point of ranked is to RANK UP & prove yourself against increasingly difficult competition. But if I’m playing sweats in bronze then like… I just don’t get it
