Betal or Vetal or Vetoba is a popular deity in India. Lord Shiva has made Vetal the presiding deity of spirits (pishach). Bhetal or Vetal plays an important role in Tantra. The meaning of his name is one who roams at nights. Bhetals are the part of lord Shiva’s Rudra ganas. Gods/Goddess has 18 groups in their army which comprised of sects called Garuda, Nagas, Gandharva etc. Bhetals are one of among them. Gods send bhetals to fight with other negative energies. Only male bhetals exist, there were no females in this sect. Among these 18 above mentioned sects, only bhetals has separate temples and worship. They are servants of Gods/Goddesses. Even though they belonged to the sect of pisachas, but they are worshipped equal to Gods. Bhetal is very dear to the Goddess and considered as her brother. Poturaju or Karuppu swamy in south india, who is worshipped along with the seven village goddesses (as their brother) is Bhetal himself. He is the commander in chief of Goddess Kali’s smashana sena. The demon/pisacha face in the center of Makara toranam is also Bhetal only. He feeds on the drishti/disti, negative energy or bad qualities and removes them. Bhetal yantra is very powerful for drishti dosha nivarana or nara drishti. In Varanasi, tantriks who want to know about past/future knowledge, do shava sadhana(called as Shava bhetalam). They keep a bhetal yantra, under a dead body and do sadhana by sitting on the corpse. Bhetal sadhana is very important for who want mastery over Khanda yoga sadhana( to cut body parts and to attach again) and Parakaya pravesha vidya( soul leaving own body and entering into another body). Bhetal is even worshipped in Kshudra vidyas. He guards hidden treasures (gupta nidhis).
Bhetal can be worshipped in Dakshina or Vama or Kapalika or Aghora acharas. There are 32 different types of Bhetals like Vaishnava bhetal, Shaiva bhetal etc. Konkan coastal region in India is very famous for bhetal worship. There are many temples of bhetal located in this particular area.
Lord Betal is seen with sword in one hand and agni pathra (bowl) in another hand. According to the Hindu believes, selfish thinking causes negative energy in the body, negative actions and increases bad karma. Vetal, the king of Ghosts, is basically a cleaner for the evil within humans. According to the hindu tradition, Lord Betal patrols throughout the village at night and keeps vigil on the property of the devotees. Betal is also known as Vetoba in Sindhudurg. Banans and sweets are offered to Lord Vetoba as prasadam or naivedyam. When wishes are fulfilled, the offering is made by the devotees in the form of leather chappals. The rich persons offer silver chappals, when their wishes are fulfilled.
Shri Dev Vetoba Devasthan is situated in the Aravali Village, Vengurla Taluk, Sindhudurg District, which is in the distance of 1 km from Shiroda and 13 km from Vengurla. Aravali, a village in the region of Konkan, is famous for the physical manifestation of Vetal or Betal, Ghost King in iconic form as Vetoba. Lord Vetoba’s (Vetal or Betal) magnificent idol is made with panchdhatu (five metals). It is bigger than life-size, 9 feet 2 inches tall, and faces north. Vetoba is in standing position with a sword in his right hand and an agnipatra (small utensil) in his left hand with his glory and power. Devotees throughout the world and village people come to this temple in the hope of being guided back to the right way of enlightenment, to get rid of bad or evil spirits, bad luck, negative energy, ill health and to seek the blessings of Vetoba during times of difficulties or before undertaking any new work for their prosperous and healthy life.
Mystery of the Temple: Lord Vetoba is offered with bananas, sweets, pairs of dhoti (a long loincloth worn by men), and, especially a specific kind of leather footwear made locally known as “chappals” which it is believed Vetoba wears during his constant patrols in the night to get rid of evil things. A heap of chappals offered by devotees as new and the old chappals, who are worn by the Lord Vetoba himself during the patrol in the night daily, can be seen in the temple. Local villagers explain us the tales of how these chappals are used by Lord Vetoba as caretaker of their village during the patrols in the night protecting their village.
