An attempt was made to bring back retro styling in the 2000s, but that eventually because outdated and no longer the trend.
They are amazing. If you get close, you might see some patches of bondo. Over years the chrome is eroded. I saw a few actually running on small diesels. I spent 3 week in the town/village of Bayamo. Great people there... As a car guy..I wanted to hire a cargo ship and buy every car on the island

Where do they find them ? We junked 70 percent of ours. The ones we do restore are 75 percent fiberglass or replicas. The engines are rarely original so we use newer crate motors. We threw our classic cars away.

The reason is two fold: Cuba has the 3rd highest doctors per capita than any other country, with a rate of 67.2 Doctors per 10,000 people. It's that a lot of Cuban children indeed thought it was a good idea to study 8 years and become a doctor that the rate is so high! What this all means is that in order for Cuba to employ all of these doctors they have to pay them much lower salaries due to the oversupplies in labour. The second reason is that Cuba offers Free Healthcare and in order for them to keep up with expenses, their salaries will further decrease. In any capitalist system, you would not have doctors paid normal wages, you would have a lot of unemployed doctors! That too, considering supply of doctors is so high, you would expect companies to also pay less salaries to any aspiring physician. The problem is not fixed this way, just compounded. If you want to critique Socialism, or Cuba in general no one is stopping you. But please fact check your statements before making them my good man! Have a nice life.

These cars weren't all left behind by the people who left Cuba. If you owned a car as of Jan. 1, 1959, when the Castro regime began, you were allowed to keep it - but you could not sell it, only transfer ownership to a close relative. In 2011 or 2012, the prohibition on selling cars was ended. Since it was impossible to get new cars pretty much from the early 1960s onwards, if you were lucky enough to own one, you kept it running!

In 2011 or 2012, the prohibition on selling cars was ended. Since it was impossible to get new cars pretty much from the early 1960s onwards, if you were lucky enough to own one, you kept it running!
