  • Christa Swartz of Prepsteaders.com shows at least 21 Foods that can last up to a century without spoiling. If you have wondered what to stock your pantry with, this is a great place to start! Prepsteading starts with simple steps like learning about and storing up a bit of food that can last without requiring refrigeration or extensive preservation techniques. Let us know what to add to this list if you are familiar with other foods that last forever.
    * The ONLY reason I mentioned pop tops is NOT because they will last, but simply because if I buy commercially canned goods at the store, I try to get them with "pop-tops" to use within a reasonable time. Their is no expectation of them lasting. (They are just great for quick meals on the run or in an emergency.)
    * Top Ramen is NOT recommended. It is on the "a few we wish would, too!" list, but is NOT a forever food.
    * Since so many have asked: There seem to be a million differing opinions out there on Peanut Butter. It should be packaged in a sealed glass jar with a metal lid and stored in a cool, dark, dry storage area. There are a good number of stories of Peanut Butter lasting 20+ years without going rancid under these conditions. I hope that helps. These statements have not been approved by the FDA. :)

I've had popcorn, all varieties of dry beans, and rice go bad due to bugs hatching inside the bags after 6 months to 1 year. A prepper channel advised to freeze all of those for 3 days in the freezer before storing them. I tried it and it works like a charm.

You can also heat temper glass jars so they are bacteria free then fill with beans or rice and pop them in the oven and then turn on the oven to 125 degrees for twenty minutes and put lids on. No bugs and nice and dry.

Watching the news the other night and they did a segment about the drive through non contact food pantries in our area and I couldn't believe what I saw. People lined up for miles to pick up some canned goods but what made me think was most were driving $50,000.00 SUVs that could easily have afforded to put away some extra food for an emergency but know there will be handouts so they didn't bother to. There are 2 different fields of thought on personal responsibility when it comes to hard times and many will not be prepared no matter what you tell them. On the other hand I am seeing an influx of new subscribers that are starting gardens for the first time this year and looking into different methods of preserving their first harvest that I feel is a positive outcome from this pandemic. The way the government is printing money now we all must be prepared for change.

@@danburch9989 : Glad you mentioned that. Everyone that I know with an SUV or a BMW or MERCEDES have LEASED the vehicle and will turn it in in two years to get a newer model to LEASE. Leases are usually over $400 a month. Add that to all the other expenses you have and you DON'T HAVE A JOB, then food becomes something you have to scrounge for. Remember too, that supermarkets have limited supplies now because the States are stockpiling food for the next viral shutdown sometime in September. They are preparing for the next food bank onslaught. If you don't have a job you must pay rent first or you have no shelter and stocking up on food will do you no good if you have no place safe to eat and sleep.

Americans don't know how to budget, prioritize or save. We have to use up all our money on wants rather than needs. Many over use their credit cards on splurges and impulse buys and then spend the rest of their lives trying to pay it back. One thing we all need to learn is how to live within our means or even below our means so there will be left over resources to save for what-if situations.

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor Před 4 lety +17

@Karen Redding. Yes, that's very true. Just like acidic fluids like vinegar, lemon juice or apple cider affect a metal lid. I think it's called corrosion. I'm Dutch.
The old way of storing salt is keeping it in ceramic bowls with a cork lid, or a ceramic lid on it. In Britain I've used a salt container once, which had a peculiar shape, but proved to be a clever design.
It was an about 30 cm. high ceramic pot with a slight belly below. Roughly 15 cm. diameter at the lower part. narrowing to about 10 cm diameter above the wider part. It was plain dark brownish-greenish, an old design, robust, possibly from the early 20th century, or late 19th. In the lower part was a hole that was just large enough to put the fingers of one hand in it and take some salt out.
The salt was placed in it through the top, which had a ceramic lid on it, and the hole where I took the salt with my hand, was about 5 cm. above the bottom of the pot, so that sufficient salt storage was kept for use, right next to the cooker.
The salt in it was rough, like the Maldon salt from the West Cornish coast.
The hole at the bottom remained open and still, the salt kept dry. I've found that the most beautiful and practical salt pot and everytime I reached inside it was a little bit exciting, like as if I wasn't sure what to find in there 😊 a little secret?

I think most store bought products will have an expiration date on them, for 2 reasons. 1 is to cover their asses from law suits if anyone got sick from an expired product. 2 They want the public to believe that the product must be use by the expire date so they can sell more product. That's just my opinion.

Now on to the saving the receipts, I save mine for big item purchases between 3 to 7 yrs. per US IRS specificTions(I was audited and unprepared once, never again) my receipts are not only sealed from air they are kept away from light and moisture as well. I place my like receipts on top of white 8"x 11" printer paper write the name of store, date and store were i purchased the item and run it through my laminator making sure all sides are sealed, then I place inside my file cabinet in my home office. I have some this for over 15 years. Every year I remove(shred) the previous year of receipts, therefore only leaving 3 to 7 yrs of receipts in and not having extra clutter...my receipts are as clear and new as the day of purchase

It may be that most of you know about this, but here's a little detail about keeping salt dry. I've learned at a young age, that putting a few rice kernels in salt, especially salt-shakers, keeps the salt dry. The rice sucks up the water and the saltshaker works fine. The rice can't get out through the fine holes in the top. Easy does it!

How can I know there is a God?
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
      Heaven... are we worthy?
Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good. 2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
Are we justified when living by the 10 commandments?
Romans 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

      Then are we doomed?
John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
John 3:17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
      Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

      How come?
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Mark 10:45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Acts 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."
Romans 5:19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
Titus 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

      Isn't this kind of strange?
Acts 13:38 "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses. 40 "Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you: 41 `BEHOLD, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD DESCRIBE IT TO YOU.' "
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness,
1 Corinthians 1:27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,
      What should we do then?
Acts 16:30 and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."
Mark 1:15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
John 6:28 Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?" 29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."

Romans 7:6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
Romans 8:12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Philippians 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Colossians 3:1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

Vodka and vinegar can also both be used to make medicinal tinctures as well as flavor extracts like vanilla (if you have vanilla beans). Whole wheat berries packed with O2 absorbers will last up to 20 years, so if you have a mill you can grind fresh flour to make your breads and pasta. Durum wheat is for pasta, Winter wheat (or hard wheat) is for breads, and Soft wheat is for all purpose flour. Baking Soda will last for years in glass containers, Cream of Tarter will also last for years in glass. Baking Powder is made by mixing baking soda and cream of tarter, but once it's mixed the shelf life is only like 6 months.

I worked in a coffee/spice/ dry bean & rice plant for over 30 years. Can coffee has nitrogen fush & oxygen free, will last 9-12 months after packaging, longer in a freezer.
Grind grains will last a long time in the freezer, not 30 year, because if you can not buy them, you will not have power for the freezer without solar power.
One good one that last 30-100 years is perennial vegetables & fruit/nut trees, one learns to propagate & 500 years is no problem.Do you have a video on perennial plants or edble flowers, like Nancy Hill's book. I know, you're talking about storage, but learned skills are very important too. Great video.

It was the first time I had ever bought it, and assumed it could be stored in the pantry after opening.
It sat unused for quite awhile and when I finally reached for it again, I saw the mold.

Properly canned & stored, the food is safe to eat as long as the seal isn't broken. As long as the seal is intact nothing can get into the jar/can to cause spoilage. There will be some nutrition loss. Can be flavor, color and/or texture changes. Those don't affect safety of the food.

Thank you for a very useful video about food stability. Most of the recommendations you make are consistent with my own experience. After 9/11, I looked in the cupboard and found it bare. So I stocked up... Year upon year passed and my stock remained untouched. then in 2015, I lost my job during a grand company restructuring. It struck me as the particular vague emergency I had prepared for. So, what did I learn when I dove into these ancient food stores?
    1) Dry beans - in the most air tight system I could devise, they continued to dry. They lose ability to germinate after two years and after many years will require up to 48 hours to soak before cooking. This may not be true if pressure cookers are used. Navy beans and lentils seem to me to hold up best.
    2) White rice can oxydize after a few years. I found that an open "hot-hands" placed inside an open ziploc bag can protect an 18 gallon plastic barrel for up to 10 years.
    3) Olive oil is supposed to have a short shelf life. I don't know what degradation has occurred, nutritionally but the bottle I am currently using has a 2009 expiration date and it tastes fresh to me.
    4) Spaghetti - I would not expect whole grain noodles to last long. The semolina noodles I purchased at Sam's in 2001 are just fine in 2018. No unusual storage effort attempted.
    5) Canned food - Tomato based and other acid products are going to eat through cans in two years. Don't bother. Soups that require can openers... my son said I would surely die if I ate them... I am still here after eating them. After some 15 years, I could not tell they had changed at all. Pop-top lids - these stayed bacteria safe for as many as 10 years (I ran out before 11 years). The pop-top cans are not moisture impervious, so the food slowly dries out over years of storage. Add a little water, as needed.
    6) Spices - Never had any seem to reduce in quality. Dried parsley loses color over time, even if stored in the dark.
    7) Whole grain - the ultimate long term storage food, in my opinion. pleasanthillgrain.com supplies super-long shelf stable foods at reasonable prices.

The problem with oils often comes down to three general factors that all feed into one problem: oxidation. The emptier the container, the more trapped oxygen that will lead to oxidation. Also, light and heat, both of which speed the process along. Keep the oil cool, dark, sealed, and the container full and it ought to keep for a decent while. That's why some containers, lost in the back of the cupboard, can be fine. :P It's also why clear plastic containers, left near the stove, that catches sunlight a few hours every day tends to go rancid.

    • @BeardedBarley1
      @BeardedBarley1 Před 4 lety +1

Just boil the soups and vegetables for 10 minutes. It should kill off anything bad. Also, often the foods don’t go bad, they just lose nutritional value over time. Olive oil and coconut oil can hold up if stored well in a cool dark place and sealed properly. The same is true for yeast. I hear if it’s kept in the freezer, it can keep for ten years. It may lose a tiny bit of effectiveness. But you can always just add more of it to breads.

An excellent presentation, but I must disagree on one thing, coffee. I realize that the coffee afficanados will say otherwise, but I LOVE coffee and I've used coffee ALREADY GROUND that I've found lost in the back of a cabinet that was at least two or three years old (and served it to others as well) and it was still excellent.
The whole bean coffee that's vacuum packed in the heavy duty foil type packages is also good for a few years. Basically, unless the coffee smells rancid, it's just fine. It won't keep forever because of it's high content of volitile oils, but unless you're a coffee snob from hell, and the poop has struck the osillating air moving device, you will appreciate a nice cup of coffee, even if it is brewed from coffee that is a few years old.

Barbara, I respect that! I used to sell coffee professionally, and learned that the coffee aficionados were very opinionated about how many hours after coffee is roasted and ground, it goes "bad". There are many foraged roots and nuts people have roasted to make a "coffee" drink, but in reality, I would probably gladly drink 30 year old coffee if it had been sealed up well. It may taste more like dirt by that time, but even psychologically it will help knowing I am drinking real coffee! :)

@Sam Smith , hi Sam. I just wanted to let you know, that Jesus isn’t coming back in a “rapture”. JESUS IS HERE Right Now! HE is In Every Believer!! When we hear and BELIEVE the Gospel, GOD gives us HIS Eternal Spirit to Live IN us!
1Cor 3:16- Know ye not that ye are the temple of GOD and that the Spirit of GOD dwelleth In you? And HE will NEVER Leave you or Forsake you! The false “church’s “ want you to think He’s not here. They want you to not worry about anyone being saved/ or making sure you ARE In the Faith, because you think you’ll be raptured out. But that is not what the Bible says. Yes we are Received up with Jesus and our brethren, but that happens when we believe; we Hear the True Gospel, Believe it, and we get the Selfsame Spirit of Christ In us! That is our Baptism!! We Are Baptized into His death, burial, and RESURRECTION!!
Eph 4:5- there is ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM.
John 4:24- GOD IS A SPIRIT and we Must Worship Him In Spirit And In Truth.
1Tim 1:17- Now unto the King Eternal, Immortal, INVISIBLE, ONLY Wise GOD..
God is a Spirit and He put His Spirit in the Son. HE came “Fashioned as a man”.
1Tim 2:5- There Is ONE GOD and One Mediator between GOD and Men, the Man Christ Jesus.
2Cor 5:19- GOD WAS IN Christ Reconciling the world unto Himself
Col 2:9- For IN Him Dwelleth All the Fulness of the Godhead bodily.
      The Son/Mediator = 2
      Man ( Flesh)- Jesus
      GOD(SPIRIT) JESUS
Did GOD die? No. He has No beginning and No ending.
      The Son, Jesus,
Died for the sins of the world, was buried, and on the 3rd day GOD Raised Him From the dead, according to the scriptures. And Now We get the earnest of the Spirit when we believe. GOD says if you Believe this Gospel, He will Also Raise up you from the dead.
Col 3:3- for Ye are dead, and your Life is hid with Christ IN GOD. This temporary life is filled with sin/death. JESUS came to bring Life More Abundantly ( ETERNAL LIFE)!!
GOD IS LIFE!! ( the WAY, the TRUTH, the LIFE!!!))) please believe this TRUE Gospel and Be Saved right Now!! When we Believe, we are BORN AGAIN, A NEW CREATURE created IN CHRIST. We HAVE Passed from death to LIFE!!! And that LIFE can NEVER DIE! We ARE RAISED to Newness of Life. We will Never Taste Death! Our Spirits ARE Eternal! We ARE SEEN IN HEAVENly Places!!
Please believe! We ARE the Church!!! Peace. ❤️ 🐑 ☀️
      Seek the Truth!

Great vid 👍 We vacuum seal most of our foods in glass canning jars. Also matches, ammo & and anything else we think of. Some have been 10 yrs old & when we popped the top they are still good to go. Baking soda & cinnamon makes an excellent toothpaste for storage (dry not wetted down ). Just wet your toothbrush, dip it into the dry mix & enjoy. Also keep cloves around as this works for tooth aches. Good quality essential clove oil is great.

Loved your video! (I'm new to prepsteaders today... this is just my third one)
Many of those foods that are only shelf stable for a year are still well worth having stockpiled. It will take a year for many people to get a large plot (field) plowed and a garden to produce. (you better have the seeds vacuum packed) It won't matter if you have still pasta if you produce wheat. Same with Ramen and a lot of other easy things... food that sustains you while your group LEARNS to be self-sufficient is vital. Canned meats if stored in a cool, dry place, will be safe to eat (might not taste the best) for 2-5 years after the "use by" date. Remember, if you aren't already raising your own meat, it will take two years to produce beef starting with one cow... what do you eat until then? And if you eat your only cow, what do you have in perpetuity?
AND, if you have a place to which you and a your colony can retreat and live by subsistence, better plan some solar powered electric fences; have spools of wire and a charger. Simple and inexpensive but critical if you are growing your own food. There is nothing as frustrating as cultivating a beautiful garden only to have the deer, rabbits, raccoons, or other varmits eat it all in a few nights. Most people forget about protecting their garden and crops when they are thinking about raising them--this is a food discussion--and without fencing or 24 hour vigilance, you won't have any food.
Oh, and thanks for the last 30 seconds of each video! Important to see who people really are.

I dry can dry beans and white rice using my food saver as well as other dry foods. While some things don't last forever, vacuum sealing does extend the shelf life. As far as herbs...grow your own, dry them and store. You can grow your own black pepper in a pot (bring in during winter). Plant a tea bush or two. Buy a dwarf citrus..also bring in during winter.
Vanilla can also be grown indoors. If you have vodka, you can make all sorts of extracts. 😀

Thank you Rosie. I totally agree. I've been preaching about the stuff on your list 4 a long time. Because as I see it as rounding out and utilizing the different food and drink items we can grow ourselves that not only provide the nutritional requirements of life that are low key and easy to care for but also give us just enough comfort in a harsh new reality-if faced with regional or global woes, that enables us to continue the fight to live. Many blessings to u and yours.💗

I just learned that opened Aunt Jemima maple syrup in it's orginal package/bottle, again, opened, keeps for at least 5 yrs. It has been sitting up there for 5 yrs, opened but unused (but half used) for 5 yrs and just made pancakes for the first time in 5 yrs and that maple syrup was just like when you first bought it. It's not natural maple syrup as many preach but kept just as well, opened, and in it's orginal bottle. Maple syrup keeps! Maybe natural keeps longer but it keeps regardless!
The add water only pancake mix is also 5 yrs old. It's opened and was partly used. It's in it's orginal box and I only took a sticky on one side kind of plastic wrap over the opening and again, was like brand new. That keeps well, as well.
Not sure about forever but man, didn't know it would last 5 yrs!

For some spices and herbs, there are freeze-dried versions (not dehydrated, that's different). They are a bit more expensive but taste more like the fresh version than regular dried and should last you 25 or more years on the shelf.

I use a lot of 5 gallon Mylar bags with 500cc absorbers for my beans, rice, popcorn, sugar, etc. I will tell from my experience that Ramins only last a few years before they start to rancid. I had the same thing happen with Bouillon cubes. Now I may have had them for 10 years but I gave them to a friend to use and he said they were bad. I did like the video very much though. I always enjoy your videos and learn a lot. Thank you and God bless you.

Hi, I love your videos and your sweet wholesome personality! You are a beautiful person! I sent your videos to my wife in Tx where we live. Im in Aviation and working in Alabama. You remind me of her. You are very similar. I appreciate all your information. My wife and son did great during the freeze because we live in the country where we have 30 acres, a well, and stock pond. Luckily we had a 3kw gen for her to use during the power outage. We always had water because of the deep well. She actually was able to have some of her friends come and get water from our well which she ran from the gen. We were so happy to be able to help others. I have already bought her a duel fuel 13 kw gen because we have a 500 gallon propane tank and our heat and cooking is propane. She already stocks cans and such. She is from Mexico so she knows all about not having and always prepping for the worse. She knows all about healing animals and people, she is a seamstress, she knows about growing food, processing animals, and all about ranch living. I am so lucky and blessed. I am doing everything I can to make sure she is ok while I am away. I travel alot for my job. I bought her a wagon to wheel that big gen around cause she wont be able to pick it up and move it on 2 wheels. Shes a smaller lady. Anyway sorry I got long winded. I told her she needs to learn English well so she can begin a youtube channel so she can share all that knowledge she has. She is amazing! You also are amazing and thank you so much for sharing and trying to help others. You are in Gods good graces!

I cleaned out an old woman's house who had many cans put up. Judging from the labels, I estimate that they were 30+ years old. All the plum cans rotted through from the inside out and the contents was just a dried out pit. The tomato sauce cans were also leaking. The other fruits and veggies had a metallic taste. I didn't dare try the cans with meat, although they were not puffy. The house was located in Fresno, Cal where we have some 105F summers, but almost no freezes. The house had evaporative cooling but I don't know if it was used.

My father was at home with his wife and daughters and me on the day he passed away. I was sitting with him on a screened patio when before he died, someone drove up and wanted to talk. I had to go out and explain my Dad wasn't available. When I returned to the porch he was on the floor being cradled in my sister's arms. She looked up at me with teary eyes and said, "I think he's dying.". About ten minutes later, he was gone.
During that ten minutes I was trying to find something to do to help him. Nothing came to mind.
A few days later I was reading the Bible. I happened upon Proverbs 31 and when I got to verse 6,. I was stunned.
Today, I have been involved in Biblical Research for just over 45 years. At the time of my Dad's passing, it was almost 25 years. I had read this chapter and even taught from it many times. But on that day I couldn't remember it.
A strong drink like whiskey will cause a reflex to gasp for air. My dad had asbestosis and was not going to survive that day, but it might have given him a little more time for us to be with him.
I don't care what denomination you claim,. God's Word is not wrong and being in Proverbs, this verse is excellent wisdom to have.

I have a friend that own a loose rea company and he said that tea should be stored in opaque containers away from sunlight or they will loose their potency and beneficial quality.
