- Prof. Constantine A. Balanis is a Greek-born American scientist, educator, author, and Regents Professor at Arizona State University. His focus of research is on computational electromagnetics, electromagnetic metasurfaces for RCS reduction, antenna beamforming and low-profile antennas. He is best known for his books in the fields of engineering electromagnetics and antenna theory, and is the author of Antenna Theory: Analysis and Design (Wiley; 1982, 1997, 2005) and Advanced Engineering Electromagnetics (Wiley, 1989). He has served IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (1974-1977), as Chairman of the Distinguished Lecturer Program (1988-1991), as Distinguished Lecturer (2003-2005), and member of the AdCom (1992-95, 1996-1999). He has received numerous awards throughout his career; the 1987-1988 Graduate Teaching Excellence Award, School of Engineering, Arizona State University, the 1989 IEEE Region 6 Individual Achievement Award, the 1992 Special Professionalism Award from the IEEE Phoenix Section, the 1997 Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award of Arizona State University, the 2000 IEEE Third Millennium Medal, IEEE AP-S 2005 Chen-To Tai Distinguished Educator Award, and most recently the 2021 IEEE Electromagnetics Award. IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society had the pleasure to record this interview with Prof. Constantine A. Balanis in which he discusses his early interest in STEM, and his research career.
Hats off to you, Professor CA Balanis ! I salute you !
It was a proud to be your student, prof Balanis.
This is a great initiative from IEEE APS on story telling of the Legends in the field of Electromagnetic and Antennas. These series will inspire many curious students to pursue a career in the field of Electromagnetics.
An analytical interview in which a huge scientific and research project is described in the form of a biography. It is an honor and inspiration for all of us the life and work of scientists of such scope. Ευχαριστούμε!
Young people need to be encouraged and inspired. Schools are not doing enough - in general- to excite children on STEM topics. They're preoccupied ticking boxes. Parents in general, don't do enough to encourage their children. Those who do, have children who grow up to be fascinated with the sciences and get into engineering. This was a wonderful interview, thanks!
This is a great idea and initiative! He is one of the greatest. Can't wait to see more like this!
His work will continue to propagate and improve lives, but his kindness had an equally profound effect on me.
Μπράβο. Great storytelling.
Felling very good to see Dr.Balanis . very interesting
Excellent interview. Hopefully it will inspire more young people to consider STEM careers. Congratulations Kosta
Thank you, it is so nice to learn about the life of someone whose book I have used for so many years. I've been using my Balanis Antenna theory book since graduate school in the mid-1990s including referencing it recently in a project.
Balanis work will remain vibrant and popular among undergraduate students and academics every now and then.
Thanking you for your contribution.
So glad to see my committee prof. Dr. Balanis on CZcams! !
Antenna Theory Analysis and Design is one of the two (the other being Microwave Engineering by Pozar) most important RF/Microwave Engineering books in existence!
Thank God for raising these people and enlightening the tech world
