It is with little exaggeration when I say this song is one of the most underrated songs of all time.
Angie, the fun loving, thrill seeking, socialite becomes restless in her relationship with her low key, laid back, homebody boyfriend. More then anything he wishes she would embrace the love and lifestyle he could give her but realizes their relationship isn't meant to survive and he struggles to let her go. His only solace is thinking that she'll never settle down for anyone so any man who gets close to her will end up in his shoes.

I feel like Angie is selling her body to gather money to try to live a better life. He loves her very deeply and understands why she's doing that but wants her to be happy. Angie doesn't want to do it but she believes it's for the best. She wants to give them a better life but they're drifting far away. They both know the relationship isn't meant to be and they're not ready to accept that. He just wants her to be happy and she wants the same for him. They're contradicting each other.
I guess I saw it completely differently... I understand the interpretation that Angie cheated on him and broke his heart. But originally, I saw it as they were both attacked, and maybe Angie was raped or hurt, either way. They are trying to reset their lives and keep going, but Angie is really struggling with life moving forward. He's trying to tell her to rely on their love to get them through it, but she is struggling with that concept.

Dude, I just like to close my eyes, sit on my porch and listen to music that talented people wrote, sang and actually has meaning, it makes me think that there is more to life then bullshit that people want you to believe. This version is different then the one on the album? It's faster and his voice is lower and the guitar is louder. I like it better
so like i know this comment is 8 years old but im sad and drunk and i was into the lumineers when this came out as a 23 year old (i dont feel ancient whaaaat) and i thought you should know i believe if my memory serves that this is either the demo or an early live version. i like it better too.

I am loving what you said. I love this band, they have inspired me to do many great things. One thing I learn is, people who can dislike any of the Lumineers songs was a shock to me. It got me upset but the Lumineers showed me it doesn't matter what they think. If people want to like Nikki Minaj that's their choice and this is ours. All we can do is just laugh at the people who dislike, because only we know how great and meaningful this really is.
