    I wanted to do a comparison mow between the Toro Greensmaster 1600 and 1000. The 1600 has an 8 blade reel, while the 1000 has an 11 blade reel. The 1600 out performed the 1000.
    This was interesting to see the differences in the cut quality.

    8 Blade vs. 11 Blade = Apples and Oranges. More blades means less trimming height. IOW, 8 blade trim slightly higher, 11 blade finish at desired height. The Toro's blade speed is the same, so there is more time for the grass blade to stand back up on an 8 blade cut rather than an 11 blade cut in order to be re-cut by the next blade, resulting in more longer stranglers on the 11 blade than the 8 blade reel regardless of 1000 or 1600.
    On another subject, sweetest lawn ever! Nice job and keep posting updates for those of us who like to live vicariously. Subscribed.

      Wrong. Depending on whether you choose the 27 or 22 tooth pulleys on the drive, and the driven pulley, you can change the frequency of cut, which should be as close to the desired HOC. Simple gear reduction, this changes the reel speed.

      I love toro, the best machines are when they are used for proper tasks, 8 Blade on high height of grass growth and 11 Blade in everyday use when this growth is small or 2-4 mm, there is also the mowing principle: you should never mow more than 1/3 of the length of the grass, i.e. if the grass is 50 mm high, the lowest length to mow should be 35mm (the height of mowing), the mower will take everything only to graze and the grass will get and suffers from the grass, for example anthracnose

    Very nice lawn an explaining the different mowers. Right now at work we are moving the greens at .140" with 11 blade reels on a Toro 3150. They only last about one week moving 19 greens every day if it all goes well. Then take off and lap with 120 grit.

      Creeping bent grass, that is what the mowers are set at for now. The true cut on the green is about .125" because of the wiehle rollers. I put on smooth front rollers when the greens start to stress in the extreme heat an that changes the true HOC on the greens.

  • @pontuslindberg
    @pontuslindberg Před 5 lety

    Hello!
    First I’d just like to compliment you on your fantastic lawn (and beautiful surroundings)! Regarding the showdown, I don’t think it was fair to the 1000 machine since these machines are meant to cut at different heights.
    Basically the more blades, the shorter the cut. If you try to cut ”tall” grass with an 11 blade cylinder the distance between the blades will be shorter than the actual grass itself, causing the blades to slide over the grass. If you on the other hand were to cut at green height (< 5 mm), the 1000 would most likely outperferm the 1600.
    Keep up the good work, I really enjoy watching your stuff!
    Regards,
    Pontus

    11 blade does not cut as well because the Frequency of Cut. The lower you go the better it will cut. If you were to cut it a .125 the roles would reverse. It would cut better at that height than the 8 blade. 8 blade is better for fairways heights. 11 blades is better for greens heights.

      Ha ha. Yeah I guess it is. The southern folks have been doing it forever. I have always liked low mowed turf. This is not new to me.

    Do you think the reel with more blades requires a slower walk speed or reel speed to get the same cut with the reel with less blades?

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel  Před 6 lety +1

      No video yet on that. I should make one. You can do it for sure. All that it takes is commitment. It requires more time.

      Connor Ward it would be cool if you did some sort of step by step tutorial for going from high to low. I am in Salt lake, KBC. I have a pretty green lawn and it's usually about 4 inches. It is also a pretty bumpy lawn. I don't even know where to start. But I'm sold on the fact that I want to do it

      Might be able to talk a mechanic/maintenance tech at a golf course to do your reels for a fair price.for the last 4 years before we got our auto reel grinder i was grinding 37 reels on a manual grinding table 1 blade at a time. I was allowed to bring my reels in from my 3 gang. Also its not just grinding. Endplay in bearings has to be kept within tolerance, bearings go bad and that means dissassembly of the entire reel to replace, bearings in rollers, bedknife tension needs to be adjusted properly and regularly. Powered reel mowers are much more expensive to buy and maintain than a rotary. As a greenskeeper i honestly dont know why someone would want to spend so much time and money on their lawn when a rotary mower and proper turf maintenance do a great job but the grass is taller making it easier to keep green. Less water, fertilizer, time etc.

    Think of the blades like a razor. If you shave every single day, more blades on your razor will give you a better shave. If you shave once a week, a razor with less blades will give you a better shave.
