      @1:09 I see there is like a gap in the lower side, between the red paint and the black lip, near where you put the jack up support underneath the car to level up the car. I've just bought an RX-8 and my car has the same gaps on both sides. Do you know what could be the cause of this? since yours had it too at least in this video

  • @eartouch

    Thanks a lot for the tutorial, i will do my own test this weekend. You already helped me a lot with my rx, it runs great now. I just wanted to give you some advice for slowing down the video in adobe premiere (thats something i can maybe help out a little bit). Try this different approach instead of right clicking on the clip in the timeline and changing the speed, because that acually doesnt make use of the 60 fps and just skips frames. Go in the media browser inside of your premiere project and right click the video file and select: modify -> interpret footage. Then in the next window you'll see the frame rate settings, select "Assume this frame rate:" and change it to whatever you want your final clip to be, for example 30 fps. Now your 60fps footage is "naturaly" slowed down to 30fps making it twice as long as the original clip - you will see a huge increase of quality and therefore readability in the pressure reading. Also helpful for making smooth carshots :D

    Thank you for the increased detail, it helps! But, please 'reduce your intake' because even to this fast talking Yankee- you deserve a speeding ticket! Add in the required mental 'Slovenian English to 'Merican' translating software, and, you need to reduce speed an additional 20%, Krys! However, I really like this updated version, because, I know that you verified data with multiple folks, showed your work, helped with the video stream (I needed that!) and validated results- including altitude! Once again- U da Best, and, I know that tons of other people appreciate your videos as well. Thanks for the extra effort- it's a big cost savings over a rotary tester ($300.00 USD!), and, does come out pretty close. Note: Gotta find out what you are taking, I could do my whole job (9+ hours) in 45 minutes at your pace... Keep 'em coming, DBM!

      Thank you so much man! Yeah, i took my time and had people analyse the video to spot any mistakes and add more accuracy to the topic. I think it came out very well, and the re-make was good move. Yeah, a rotary tester does have a pretty sexy price tag, but if you think about it, you pay 300, and test the compression to 6 friends for 50$, and you've paid it off. The problem is finding 6 friends that have a rotary engine hahah.
      Naah, i'm sure you'll do it just as fast. You got all the steps you need 😊

    Hi, really enjoy all you rx8 videos and I just did the compression test today to my 2010 RX8 R3 as well. But just wondering why you add the difference between MAX PSI and Highest PSI to the PSI reading to get the REAL PSI? Have been doing research online but seems can’t find anything related to this. Thanks

  • @marksmith3554
    @marksmith3554 Před 2 lety

    Thanks for the info. Can you explain the maths behind why you add the difference between the max psi and best rotor psi value! With the gauge valve removed are you saying the pressure reading (90psi) is just inaccurate and is actually really the 110psi recorded when the valve is in the pressure gauge? Therefore, the key part of the vid is using the go pro and editing software to be able to see the difference between the 3 faces of the rotor.
    Anyone done this and then compared to a trusted rotary testing service/device to see how close/accurate it is?

  • @SirPsychonautic
    @SirPsychonautic Před 3 lety +1

    this is not how you do a rotary compression test. to get proper results, you need to remove the Schrader valve on the compression tester and watch the pulses as you are measuring 3 values from 1 spark plug hole. If you do this, you could potentially be masking the true problems with your engine. I was dumb and did this and had 120psi on my rx7 front and rear rotors, but when I used the proper method, it was about 70 psi per rotor face, which is about the same as what a Mazda compression tester would have given me (I have both methods).

    Front - 6.08 - 5.66 - 5.46

    This is the "Easiest Way" to do a compression test on Rotary Engine.
    1. Buy a GoPro,
    2. Buy a Ratchet Extension
    3. Buy a Ratchet
    4. 22mm socket
    3. Buy a Jack Stand
    4. Buy a piston compression tester
    5. Really Thin Twisters
    6. Cross wrench
    7. Jack
    8. Cleaner
    9. Bend nose plier
    10. Very complicated movie editing software, you only need to learn a few hours to use it.
    11. Buy a Microsoft Office.
    It will cost about $1000 to buy those parts, very cheap
    And It only takes about a day to do it, and you will finally get not inaccurate compression readings of your engine.
    Thank you very much.

      Apparently the rear rotor is more prone to wear because it sits closer to the flywheel (according to the specialist)
      Additionally, I had my SSV checked out. Turns out the previous owner switched the plugs around on them, so they have never worked when I had the car in my possession. Car drives like a dream now!

      Fans are old and weak or not engaging.
      Install fan control kit to turn on fans earlier.
      Stuck thermostat
      Air in cooling system
      Clogged Catalytic converter
      These are the simple things to check
      1) Use an OBD to see at what temperature the fans turn on. If it's at 86°C it's ok the thermostat is working. The temperature must not exceed 105° C if it goes above 105, shut down the car immediately.
      2) I would suggest you invest in an alluminium fan shroud. Mishimoto has a good one, check out my video.
      3) If it's not the issue, take down the catalytic converter and check the honeycomb, to see if it's intact or clogged. Leave the car running so it reached trigger temperature and see if it overheats. DO this in a very well ventilated area outside.
      4) You can take it to a mechanic and have him check all the above.

      carlos vega I like the thinking 😄 I also had an idea to buy a separate trunk, where I install a GT wing, and my original trunk where I have the mazdaspeed one. This way I can register the mazda one, and swap it for the gt once I get the papers 😜

    I have bought a compression tester but in mine there wasn´t a valve like in youre´s is it a problem? I mean at 02:10 in your video.
    i tried my compression tester on my Audi A4 B5 and the compression is holded in my tool until i release the compression on the side from the tool.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  Před 6 lety

      erliches71 if you test the compression on a piston engine, you dont need to remove the valve. Leave it in and see whats the highest psi you get, and that is your compression

      I have this here www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B01GVAKOUI/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅZÕÑ&qid=1519286560&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=kompressionstester . and yeah i know that i don't need to remove the valve for a normal piston engine but i want to buy an rx 8 and before i buy i want to check the compression. that's why I'm asking. my pressure release is on the side. and i got no valves in the adapter either not in the long hose.
      so is my tester wrong for rotary cars like the rx 8 ?

  • @eeacosta7220
    @eeacosta7220 Před 3 měsíci

    You.need to remove the shredder valve to check the compression on each chamber on each rotor. This compression test will not be accurate.on each rotor face.

      @@markbell5483 thats strange, but if your car hesitates a lot or doesnt event start at times, it could be due to low compression. But if the trailing spark plug gets a pulse, the leading should too. If both trailing and leading of one rotor are 0, then its time to save up

    I just got a compression test done recently at a Mazda dealer ship and they said my compression was low with rotor 1 having 6.3, 6.5, 6.9 and rotor 2 having 6.8, 6.4, 6.2. Just recently suddenly started having long crank times and a bit of lack of power and they told me it was probably due to the low compression readings. But according to this BAR chart it is still good? Do you think it might just be bad ignition coils or plugs?

      Buy one with decent or even failing compression, upgrade the ignition system, and drive the car as you slowly buy new engine parts to eventually rebuild. Thats what i did.
