Why Does Doha Have Two Adjacent Airports?

  • Plenty of large cities around the world have two or more airports. These have often been built at different times, with larger airports introduced further from the city as aviation volume has grown. They can also serve different regional areas. But Doha in Qatar, is slightly unusual in that it has two large airports adjacent to each other to the southwest of the city. The new one was opened as aviation expanded dramatically, particularly with homegrown airline Qatar Airways.

    I transferred flights at Doha airport in 2003. I'd flown in on an A340. We were there again on the return leg. The terminal was very small and had poor facilities. At the time the new airport was under construction. They apologised for the poor facilities. Obviously much much better now. The flights were great.

    I have visited both airports. In 2008, I made transit through the Old Doha International twice. This was not a pleasant experience. Long Bus trips to/from the terminal, and the terminal itself was very bare and had limited choices of restaurants and duty free. At the same time, however, Dubai Airport (still in development of the new Terminal 3 and A concourse) was a significantly better transit point. On the plus side, the Old Doha Airport availed some amazing airside views. I have taken some stunning photos of a QR A340-600 during pushback and taxi. The New Doha International Airport (Hamad) is significantly better. Yes, it does have a similar feel to Dubai International, but, in my opinion, it is significantly better since the terminal is more compact and the services are more accessible when compared to the major Middle East rival airport. This fact, coupled with QR signature hospitality, on ground service, in flight service, and OneWorld membership, has made Hamad International my preferred transit point of choice in the last 7-8 years. As for airside views, there are great windows and the lounges have some amazing views of the apron. the only negative is that enthusiasts now have to watch planes through the glass.

      It'd be an expensive modification, seeing how the old airport was clearly not in the master plan with a major expressway and business parks splitting the two. More likely the old airport grounds were planned to eventually close, redevelop, and become a new expansion of the city proper.

    Hi, I have in fact used the new Hamad Intl airport back in 2017, I think it was July. Hamad is a nice airport and relatively easy to navigate around. I did a couple of rounds in the duty free as I had arrived early and just about an hour before boarding since I was not aware how easy and how far I had to walk at the time. I went to find my gate. It's probably one of the easiest massive airports I have ever gone through. I have been to Dubai three times and manage to find my way around that airport, But Hamad airport I find is easier still and walking is less too. Airport wise I prefer Hamad Intl over Dubai, Airline wise, Give me Emirates any day.

    That didn't awenser the question why to put the new Airport adjacent to the old one. I was expecting something along the lines of location evaluations and not a short history of the airline... anyway, interesting video.

    Yes, the new one in 2020
    It really designed for transferring and the toilet is clean
    The only thing bad is the wifi network.

    Hamad is cool. Probably prefer it to Dubai. Both super expensive though (as all airports are).

    Hamad International Airport is one of the best designed Airports in the Middle East.

    Since they are next to each other, it should just be considered an expansion rather than giving it a new name. Two different names like this for something right next to each other is a recipe for confusion disaster for travelers!

      @doujinflip Před 2 lety +2

      The old airport now just serves private, charter, and military flights, so there wouldn't be any confusion anyway

      @@fabeegaming3849 I've been there, I find it to be easy to use and there's places to rest. Also as a muslim, it has a lot of prayer spaces which is lovely. You may disagree and thats completely fine as that is my experience and opinion.

    I may miss travelling, but I do not miss wasting hours in the new Doha airport. All the money in the world can't buy you a Changi or class.

  • @Lillyabdlmtf
    @Lillyabdlmtf Před 2 lety

    The point is kinda moot when Doha international is completely shutdown. Could or should they have used the land to expand the existing airport yes.

    Proud to have contributed to the development of the carrier between 2013 to 2015. Opening HIA was a relief for us on the ground. DIA was a hard slog, fun though.

    The airport is not customer friendly, especially for the transiting passengers. All passengers in transit go through the same security clearance, often causing commotion and missing connecting flights at peak times when arrivals are many. Exiting the security check is through one point and again, very inconveniencing (its like going though a funnel).
