I went for a casual run today in the park and ended up being run at and followed for about half mile by this little cinnamon black bear who was fresh out of the den. I've seen plenty of bears in the wild, but this was the first time one had shown any interest in me. He must have been extra hungry and hoping for an easy target!
Luckily this was not my first bear encounter as I have worked as a wildlife guide for Guides of Jackson Hole (www.guidesofjacksonhole.com) for several years, and have learned a good deal about the behavior of black bears in that time.
A couple of things to note:
    1) this is a "cinnamon phase" BLACK bear....even though it is brown in color
    2) I had bear spray in my running vest and got it out immediately (but did not spray it as the bear never got within 20 yards)
    3) I did NOT run away. If I had, the bear could have thought of me as prey and chased me down. Being that I am not prey, I stood xmy ground when it charged (showing it that I'm not a prey animal) then backed away slowly
    4) I did NOT play dead. That may save your life if a mother bear with cubs is attacking, as she may perceive the threat to be over. But with a solo bear who is interested in you like this, it is not trying to eliminate a threat - it is trying to find an easy target. Don't be one.
    5) I kept talking to it to show that I was a Human and not to be mistaken for another animal
Not all bear encounters are the same. In most cases I've been able to just go around the animal. But this one was interested in me, so I had to change it's mind!

I had a similar encounter when I (foolishly) went to explore the Bar BC Ranch by myself on a day off. Similar size and color, too. Backpedaling through sagebrush is tricky, but I was highly motivated. He followed me at a distance all the way back to the car. It's easy to forget that any moment in a National Park can be a wild encounter.

The bear definitely associates humans as food. I'm not saying as food.. but he/she got food from humans be it garbage scraps camp grounds or backpacks. Seems to think he'll get a hand out from you.
You handled this situation very well :)

Sometimes the bear pretends to run aside but he’s actually moving closer as he is out of your sight. They run in zig zag so... beware.

i wonder if you sprayed a bit of bear spray on the ground where you were.. the scent taste of the bear spray would have caused him to lose interest in following? He/she looked like they were sniffing where you were standing to see if you had food? and if they smelled the bear spray they might have backed off right away?

wow what a trip. I had a few bear encounters last summer here. I just got to the Tetons on the 12th of April. Seems like there's a lot of bear activity already here in the Tetons. Grizzly 610 was first spotted on the 13th and 399 on the 15th! I saw a guy running at Elk flats yesterday. was that you? Love this place!

One way you could have stopped him from following you is to spray a line of bear spray on the pavement where you walked. The moment he smelled that he would have hightailed it out of there. That's what the forest rangers told us to do when in a situation where the bear would choose to walk on the same road as we're walking.

A bear slowly walking up to you should be considered predatory hungry behavior. A hungry bear is just saving energy walking up to his dinner (you!),
