      I got the Dragon glass as a gift. I didn't think too much of it at first, but if you leave it on the table in front of you with the opening pointed to your face, you can get wafts of the alcohol you're drinking. I also kind of hold it kind of like you'd hold a snifter, but with the pointed bottom resting between my ring and middle finger. It just kind of naturally sits there.
      I wouldn't say these make the glass better. I also wouldn't claim these as selling points at all. Just what I've observed by interacting with the glass for a while.

      I went on this journey years ago. My conclusion is it really depends on the whisky. I like the Norlan for most whiskies with a lot of barrel. The Glencairn for peaty or complex drinks and the rocks for most everything else. I find myself using the rocks more often and the others for special nips. I really like the Norlan but I've found a few whiskies that just don't play well in it. It really just comes down to whatever you prefer.

      Glencairn (any tapered small mouth glass) under 55-60% abv... generally
      Old Fashion/DOF (wide mouth tumbler) for the barrel proof juice (55%+ abv)
      Personally, I drink a lot of whiskey that legally qualifies as hazmat (or close to it) and I prefer not having liquor laser beams scorching the delicate inner lining of my nostrils when I drink that delicious nectar of the Gods. So I give my barrel proofs a wide birth! :-)

    I had a similar experience with Norlen vs Glencairn. I do 99% of my whiskey drinking with a Glencairn simply because I have a bunch of them from all the clubs I'm involved in and getting them as gifts. The Norlen seems to mute the alcohol a bit and I've noticed a little bit sweeter flavor in my limited experience with them. I think aroma plays a huge role in drinking so the rocks glasses get reserved for cocktails.

  • @RockyMtnHigh2008
    @RockyMtnHigh2008 Pƙed 4 lety +5

    When nosing, try opening your mouth a little when inhaling it, this cuts down on the alcohol burn. Similar to retro-haling a cigar and the different notes experienced, when nosing whiskey also try putting your nose up to the glass and breath in through your mouth only, there's a whole other set of notes there too and almost no alcohol burn. That said, for me the Glencairn is my favorite. I love all whiskey, but I hold scotch in a higher regard. My first sip of Laphroaig was in a Glencairn and when I see one with brown nectar in the bottom I am instantly brought back to that day, where my love for all things peaty and smoky began. Love the videos Jeremy, keep them coming!

  •  Pƙed 4 lety +16

    I recently got myself some Norlan glasses, before seing this video, and I actually did the same experiment than you on different glasses. I can only agree with you on all these points. And I also checked the temperature difference from one glass to an other. The Norlan stays pretty chill even in the sun and your booze keeps chill too. Great glasses! Cheers...

  • @thejonathandoan
    @thejonathandoan Pƙed 4 lety +7

    I am FIRMLY in the "glass type changes flavor profile" camp. Just yesterday, I bought a GlenDronach Original 12 yr Single Malt Scotch that I poured into a Glencairn and I didn't like it. There was far too much bite and even a stale flavor on the back of the throat. I then used a rocks glass (only holding to sip, so no heat transfer) and it immediately made it more palatable and smoothed it out significantly. I was able to enjoy it more.
    The shape of the glass and width definitely affects the way the whisky is presented.

      Try twirling it in the glen for a bit first, and then let it rest a minute. Also, the first pour is often the harshest as it will likely contain the most concentrate of vapors.

    • @Elliot_Z
      @Elliot_Z Pƙed 3 lety +1

      Often it is recommended to let the whiskey sit for about 10 min before nosing it. First sniff should be just over the glass. Second should be above the rim. Third nose in the glass. Getting more robust each time. I like the Glencairn glass just for that more intense experience.

    I use a Glencairn for tasting whiskey, I use a rocks glass for drinking it. Also, the more you drink out of a Glencairn you will notice your body starts making little adjustments so you don't have to do to the 'stare at the ceiling' to take a drink. I noticed I naturally open my jaw a little more, tilt the glass more once it is resting on my lip, and other little tweeks so I can still look at people when I am drinking but it wasn't right away. I like the Norlan, just not at that price point.

    The Norlan is a modified Glenciarn inner-sleeve with a slightly more open rim, with a Tumbler-style outer shell. That's why the nose is almost the same, but your hand doesn't warm the whiskey because of the double-wall construction, resulting in fewer expressed fumes. Best of both worlds, defeating the " nubbin" hold style of the Glenciarn. Dragon Glass is a stemless snifter... which is a nice modern take on a very oldschool/ classic way to drink spirits.

    I love the glencairn, though the thing about the nose is I think the best distance varies from person to person based on how strong your sense of smell is. It looks like you just dove straight into it, which makes sense cause when you drink that's what it'll be. But I believe Rex from the Whiskey Vault actually explained to start further away and then slowly approach it and stop when you register the notes, cause further and you'll get more ethanol.

    But my opinion... i just love to look at the whiskey in the Norlan glasses.. makes me enjoy it more. Becomes like a ritual.. you know taking out the special glass for the special liquor and just enjoy it. savour every sip

But I just got some glencairns and really like the feel of it.

The only drawback from a standard rocks glass is when you get a neat pour at a bar and... well it looks like so little whiskey in that type of glass. I do want to get a Norlan glass someday AND something I head of not long ago called a Tuath Irish whiskey glass... cuz they fancy. Once I have my bar setup completed I will need to do my own glass comparison and see how my own biases stand up to what I seem to prefer. Now all you need to do is find an excuse to visit Texas and invade the whiskey vault in person! SlĂĄinte!

    The glencairn is the go to glass for nosing, for what that is worth, but it is a pain to drink out of. I use a nice sized tulip shaped glass or a rocks glass. I would call the tulip glass that I use the 'Zoftig' of glasses. Whatever whiskey I like, I just go to my tulip or a nice crystal rocks glass. Easy to drink out of and nice to hold. I don't have a Norlan, but I might just to give one a try and get a few to put in my bar.

    I think for the glen glass it depends on what you are drinking. I drink some strong scotch whiskeys/whiskys and bourbon barrel aged whiskeys. So it depends on what you are wanting to do. Enjoy an evening by the fireplace or with a few friends and catch up over a nice glass of something to warm your soul. I have found recently that I am currently in love with some of the more peaty whiskeys like Laphroig and Connemara 12 year.
    Honestly, I only use shot glasses for measurements for cocktails & mixed drinks for friends that just want to party a little hard. Otherwise I do agree with your sentiment on shot glasses. One whiskey you might like is Glenmorangie La Santa Sherry Cask Scotch Whisky. It's a slightly tart cherry flavor with some smokeyness on the backend but is friendly to drink neat.

It is on the historic registry. It was not Buffalo Trace till 1995, but the buildings and and the land are on the registry. They stayed in operation through prohibition, when you could get a prescription from your doctor.

    JS, In some places in Scotland they have stemmed Glencairn glasses which remove the pinkie out sensation, give you more to hold on to and because they have the stem don't force your head back as much. I have Norlan glasses as well and love them but the sippy cup lip becomes a problem when I go from a thin lip glass to the Norlan...I dribble a little which is fine by myself but a bit embarrassing when sipping in a group.

When I tip the glencairn up to get anything out of the glass I always get choked. Sucking down gasoline and rubbing alcohol down the wrong direction is enough for me to get the red solo cups out. I'll try the Norlan's next. Thanks!

    Try blowing on the liquid, removes most of the alcohol burn if you don't like it (roll the liquid around so it coats most of the glass, blow then look at the legs. When they are about halfway down its ready to nose). Also, with the glencairn you can sniff at the top of the glass for a more rounded smell. Sounds weird, but it really works. Use a single nostril if you can. Each one will have slightly different results. Sniff through your nose and exhale through your mouth. I find short sniffs are better than long draws, but each to their own. Have a nosing chart handy to help you identify scents - most of them are pretty vague and often not obvious until they are pointed out. Slainte!

      The glassware is all relative: I have a collection of crystal that all have very specific purposes... even only for special days. Only because of the feeling of comfort they give, or whom I received them from. Baccarat Diamante Double old-fashioned, Edinburgh Thistle DOF ( very rare ), Lots of different Waterford Tumblers, DOF's and snifters... a pair of Glencairn-style by Riedel, among others. Some cost more than I can say without feeling embarrassed, others were a steal, or gifts. Some feel amazing because of shape, weight/ heft, style. Delicate whiskeys are more Glencairn style, to enjoy the nose ( Cragganmore). Others have so much punch they can be served in an Quaich and the nose is still powerful ( Lagavulin/ Laphroaig). The glass enhances your enjoyment of the spirit. Seems a shame, though to serve a $200+ whiskey in a cheap Coke-logoed glass, or such. Some of these spirits deserve the respect that years, if not decades of waiting went into the making. Treat yourself to a nice whiskey glass...Try antiques places, or Ebay. There's some amazing stuff out there, collecting dust, unappreciated, just waiting for you to anoint with the Water of Life. SlĂ inte!!

    Anyone drinking out of the bottle is more interested in the alcohol and not the flavour. But if that's your thing, go for it. I choose a glass based on the situation. If I want to really enjoy and savour a whiskey, then Glencairn all the way. Because we taste more with our nose (scent) that with our tongues, the narrow mouth concentrates the flavours. If i'm with friends and I'm just drinking whiskey paying more attention to the conversation than what's in my glass, then it's the rock glass. That's just my 2 cents. Anyway, I enjoyed the video.
