During Raizo’s time there, Zou was raided by one of the Four Emperor’s (one of the superpowers of the world) fleet, the Beast Pirates. The Beast Pirates laid siege to Zou, as they were searching for Raizo. They destroyed the cities, butchered civilians, and tortured the soldiers, including the cat and dog (who are the leaders of the country). Even as they were killed, tortured, gassed, and had their limbs cut off, everyone interrogated said they’d never even *heard* of a guy named Raizo. This went on for _17 days straight._ It wasn’t just the soldiers, either. In a show of extreme loyalty, even after 17 days of death and torture, not a single man, woman, or child sold Raizo out. *_“Raizo is safe.”_*
People don't talk enough about how proud the Mink are when the secret comes out. Young and old, man and woman, soldier and civilian, every single one of them is beaming at the archievement.
ong for a sec after seeing the flashback, I was rly confused of Kinemon's lowkey reaction, but it was only a couple months for him and he probably wasn't 100% certain it was them or that they'd have lived after the events at Wano 20 something years ago
i love how this scene is really memorable for luffy. in the final battle wano arc, luffy telling mink tribe what they did to not sell their friend is crazy. loyalty is luffy strong point as a character after all, remember when he almost died for keep quiet about ace while he got tortured

In the real world, in the past it was quite common for groups of people to die for what they believed in, they did have values. Starting from the assumption that they were wrong and spoiled their lives... "Can't they regret it because they ceased to exist?!" However, while they were here, their lives took on greater meaning.

He smiled because the minks exhibited loyalty to their friends, that is how you gain respect the most from luffy. Same reason he wept both times bon clay saved him, and the same reason he has done most of the heroic actions he has done, to help his friends old or new
