    Fabulous progress! The raised street scene in the foreground will look amazing when finished and replicate the way railways punched through the urban areas. I get most of my foam board much the same way you did; here in the States it's frequently used for roadside advertising and political signs and when events or campaigns are over they're free for the taking.

    Ration Central is a fantastic layout. I love watching your videos and I haven’t even got a model railway! One day I might get round to building one.

      Thanks. My dad had a layout until I was 5, then he lost interest and I never had any, but did have the idea as a sort of pipe dream. Then when my son was 9 seven years ago he decided he might like one and it all just snowballed from there. At the time I knew zero about trains, real or model!!

    Great work and ideas really like the by front raised street scene. The rural leading to the Towne areas are a great way to tie them togeather.
    The wharf area sounds promising. Maybe an older steam powered pillar Crane to load and unload freight and driage. Ports are very busy places. Especially during the transition era from steam to diesel.
    Good to see you have a few more supporters.
    Keep up that great work.
    Please keep us informed of the loft railway progress.

    Glad to see you got things happening on that layout again. Nothing wrong with the smaller ones though. But let's face it; Bigger is just plain better and more fun in the longer run. And that's the whole thing about a bigger layout; It takes longer to build, and there's more running possibilities. Imho.
    I just think that most people would want to fill an entire room, the attic or the basement if they had the room and the resources to do so.

    Again great work guys - the raised area reminds me a lot of Finchley Road station where I used to commute daily. Could you use this as a means of combining overground and underground trains with separate platforms for each? That could give you the start of yet another level😀

  • @jvanamb
    @jvanamb Před 4 lety +1

    How do. Relatively new subscriber in the U.S. Enjoy the budget oriented modeling. Have been the same since the 1950's.
    So a bit on hiding your wooden pillars under your station.
    I don't know if or how the wood is held in place however, take the pillar off scene. Distress the wood with rolled up Aluminum Foil, steel brushes, or scouring pads. Paint a base coat of dark gray flat. Then make gashes like stone grout lines.
    Here in the U.S. we have a paint product which has sand like elements blended in the paint. Spray or brush your pillar with the Terrain Paint a Light Gray or Stone Red. Accent the gashes with a Black Paint Pen or Marker.
    If you don't have Terrain Paint available you can take your choice of Paint medium and mix in slowly a finely sifted sand. This Budget Method will only work with a brush application technique.
    So far am enjoying the ride and will stay on board with your build.
    ~Jim

  • @flyboy2610
    @flyboy2610 Před 4 lety +1

    That's really coming along, Mike! For the wooden supports, I would paint them gray, then draw some lines on them to represent concrete blocks. The brick paper idea is good, also, but for the "weight" these are supporting, I think concrete block works better.

      Sometimes I'm not sure how I do things?! Generally I just look at things until a solution comes too me, and we get some great suggestions as well. I also find looking at and reading railway books a great help, until 7 years ago I knew literally nothing about railways real or model, I had no interest at all. Douglas wanted a model railway so to support him I sold my military and aviation models, and then got hooked!

    For the bit of wood beneath the high level station that needs hiding, I reckon that you could quite feasibly wrap it in brick paper and have it as a tunnel/station support.

    I really love your ideas on street scenes. As you said, lots of railways were, and still are, set into dense urban settings, and that is something interesting to do some evocation of this on your layout.
    Anyway, just a personal taste hint, purely indicative : in my opinion, one thing that would be great with your elevated station scene, could be to not have a continuous row of houses in front of the tracks cutting. You can put some realistic discontinuations in the house row, like a public garden, a small place, or a parking lot, to give a glimpse of vision on the track below at interesting angles, permitting to see the station below, but not at one and in its entirety. It could be very interesting, visually. I let you see if my idea have some interest for you.

    I also have a question: With the road at the back, would you get away with a narrow road there (say, narrower than would fit a car), and still get the impression of a normal road, because people won't actually look down the length of the road?
