We have been going in and out of the Columbia River, Oregon for the past few months and I had no idea that we have been crossing the Columbia River Bar - an area known as the graveyard of the Pacific.
For the past 200 years it has wrecked over 2000 ships and to this day, remains as one of the most treacherous waterways that ships pass through on a regular basis.

Hey guys! I've been a bit busy lately but I finally found some time to edit. Our ship has been passing through the Columbia River Bar for the past three voyages and little did I know that it had a reputation as being the graveyard of the Pacific. I hope you enjoy! LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE!!!
Love this area. Glad that you are able to feature the bar and it's history. This is one my dream sails in North America, and sail all the way to Portland, with a captain aboard. I should have been a seaman not a nurse :). Thanks for sharing Chief!

Consistently of the highest standard in every way. Interesting, well edited and even the most mundane story has an interesting spin. The research - and even down to the damn lens flare, make every vid consistently the most enjoyable for me on CZcams.
I don't subscribe to too many vids but there are several that I do, including yours. Usually the vids I subscribe to are around engines, (since I'm a mechanic) and they are also very good in every way, but yours tops them all (notice I didn't say tr**ps them all for obvious reasons lol).
I've always been interested in the sea and shipping and like you if I were at sea I'd be down in the bowels of the ship in the 45deg C engine room, but there was never any possibility of a career at sea where I live, so I get to watch your vids x

Chief.........I know this is an older video , but just wanted to comment. One of my very best friends is a barr river pilot. He goes out , gets on the ships and then pilot's them up river. He's been a tug boat captain for over 20 years , and it took about 23 years to get accepted in the river pilot program. He has sacrificed a lot , and he now does very well for himself. He's got some pretty good stories. It is not uncommon for even those big freighter's , to rub the bottom. The big ones will have the hull 43' deep in the water , going through 45' deep water. You can feel and sometimes hear when they rub. Smaller boats......can be extremely dangerous there for many reasons. Best to have an experienced pilot at the helm for sure.
Wow 20 years just to qualify. I'd ride with him or anyone he spoke for. I'm terrified of the ocean as this video demonstrates for good reason.
@@travisthornton7614 Thanks Travis. Yep......we are both in our 50's now , and have known each other since 1st grade. We have competed in MX together for about 40 years of that , but also.....he is on the ships , while I'm actually in the ocean ( spear fishing ). We fish together on his boat , but he won't dive with me in the water haha! . It's cool when we go out on the Columbia to fish together , and we run past some huge ship that he knows very well. " Yeah.....I've piloted that one before ". Pretty proud of the guy , especially knowing the amount of stress it would be to pilot something like that. Some of those big ships are 1200' long! There is no way I could do what he does.
@@travisthornton7614 Btw.....the 20+ years , is mainly waiting for a spot to open up. You need a lot of years as being just a regular captain , but when you apply for " River pilot ".....you basically have to wait for someone to retire. If I remember right , I think there is a certain number of them ( 59 ? ) pilots spread out between Oregon , Washington and Idaho. That may have changed , but I think that may still be correct.
@@jeffro5032 I've read you got to be able to draw an exact map of the area your getting your license for from memory. I can see why only a handful of ppl would even pays given that.
I grew up on the banks Columbia, not far upstream from Kalama, watching ships headed to and from Portland every day comparing their stack markings and flags to charts and maps on the wall. Doing that gave me a lifelong affection for travel and mariners..
I crossed the bar for the first time at 4 years old in a 26 ft Owen's. My dad was a charter captain and we took recreational salmon fishermen out from Astoria for two weeks twice a year for twelve years. I will never forget that first crossing. The waves were taller than the boat. Dad was a consummate seaman and trained us well, so this episode is quite personal for me. Thanks Chief.

Chief Makoi, this voiceover is like listening to a poetry reading. You lay out this story with such eloquence, it makes the video portion almost superfluous.
I really appreciate having a professional sailor telling us about his world. Daily I see freighters, tankers, big and small sailing by Vancouver Island and was curious about this industry.

Thank you for taking us along. Your channel takes me back a couple decades. I worked on an adventure trip...or as I say, ferrying rich people in SE Alaska and Panama.
I was very fortunate to have several transits of the canal and whales, glaciers, and many other amazing things.
Just sold our vacation home in Long Beach Washington. I pretty much grew up there. My Dad used to run his 14 foot open bow boat over the bar all the time. Of course he was a triple war vetran Navy vet. I remember us fishing out there watching swells what seemed to be tall as a small building.
Being from the area. Yeah dude, the bar is no joke. Also, shout out to the coast guard that work those waters.

I'm working on a painting that has the Flavel House in Astoria- the one that was abandoned.
It must be pretty tough to get a license to navigate this river.

Cape Disappointment is the home of the National Motor Lifeboat School. They train in the the roughest weather and large seas of the Columbia River Bar.

You should triy and visit the Maritime museum in Astoria Oregon the next time your in Port. I wish you fair winds and following seas shipmate.
Thank! I had a short tour of Portland area back in 2005. Sadly nowadays the loading operations became very fast and almost no time for shore leave anymore. Maybe I'll get lucky someday.
Chief MAKOi Portland has changed Chief. :(. Once Conservative Portland was a gorgeous place to live. Now they have become infamous due to the Left Leaning , Progressive politicians. ANTIFA has a huge presence and they regularly riot. The Police get zero love from the Mayor. It is so bad , that the County Sherrif’s Office stopped responding to Portland Police mutual aid calls. The Portland Bureau of Police is having problems with staffing ....they can’t retain Cops and it’s become really difficult to recruit . Visually , the Pacific NW remains stunning

I'm a commercial fishermen and we used to sail out of the Columbia regularly. Treacherous waters. No one's sleeping when we go through, all hands on deck.
When I was a kid growing up in the 1970s, I went salmon fishing with my dad and brother often. On one trip coming back to Ilwaco the tide was coming in against the flow of the river. The result was 20 foot (6.1 meters) swells. I'll never forget the seen of a small boat zig zagging and bobbing between these huge crests and troughs.
I just kayaked across the Columbia Bar with my friend in June 2019 on a paddle down the West Coast...really exciting streatch of water as you described...it was neat to feel the warm water of the Columbia and see all the sea lions and big ships...the US Coast Gaurd helped us out with descriptions of the conditions...Long Beach was also really cool. Thanks for the history you brought in with the video!

Another great vlog. Right after WW2 my dad was stationed at the small navy base in Astoria. He told me how rough the water can get there at "the bar." Thanks for all the super historical information.

Being a guy in Belgium who works in a chemical plant watching this thing called a video on this thing called a computer about a guy and his ship somewhere at the whole other end of the world. I love your channel, it makes me dream about how other adventurous lives are like on a whole other part on this crazy world we live in.

Remember, the lighthouse was funded and constructed well within a lifetime of the famous Lewis & Clark expedition. That so much commerce would arrive not so many years after the expedition is remarkable. John Jacob Astor has a connection to the Columbia River. Not only is the city of Astoria (on the Oregon side) named after him but he played a major role in developing that commerce and to make the bar pass safer by providing for navigational aids. The Astor Column is near the Cape Disappointment lighthouse in Ilwaco. It is worth it to visit if only for the great panoramic views.
In the summer months, the area inside the bar is packed with small boats of all kinds trying to catch Salmon. They won't move out of the channel unless they really, really have to. lol During the Civil War there was a gun battery at the lighthouse. The battery had several gun emplacements, the largest being a 15" gun overlooking the bar. And if you look on the NOAA charts, you will see hundreds of symbols which mark shipwrecks. Fa'afetai
@ Secret Squirrel, the Astoria Column is not located in or near Ilwaco Washington, it's on the hill in Astoria, Oregon across the river from Ilwaco.
This is my home ground. I was born and raised within 40 miles of Buoy 10. The fishing here is Fantastic. Though it can be incredibly dangerous! Just makes the fish taste better. ;)

I grew up in this region and about 10 years ago, decided to become a merchant mariner. I'm proud to have the ice-cold water of this region running in my veins when we are facing epic challenges out at sea. I'm just now beginning to tell my story on my CZcams channel, (about damn time) and your channel has been a major influence. Keep posting awesome videos and telling your story!

Chief MAKOI, my Grandfather was shipwrecked out there back in 1914. He was 1 of 2 that survived the wreck. It was a ship called Francis H Leggett. If you look into it my Grandfather was George Poelman. I enjoy your videos.

I visited Astoria, OR in December 2018. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, and I was fascinated by the cargo ships! Your videos have greatly added to my understanding and appreciation of the merchant mariner life!

Nice film of the Columbia river...during the summer anyway. Winter makes it a whole different environment and with wind, waves, fog/low clouds it can be a very scary place. For example, with winds of 60 knots pushing the ocean against the cliffs, that lighthouse shown has waves and spray coming onto it. Washington/Oregon coasts can be dangerous places in the winter. I know, I live there.

Another great video! I live here and have been across the bar several times in fishing charters. It can be hard to keep your lunch down with those big swells! Sometimes it gets so rough they temporarily close the bar to traffic. After decades of watching the cargo ships come and go from here, it's really cool to see it from your perspective as well. Great documentary!

Thats an impressive piece of water and history right there. The Tillamook lighthouse AKA Terrible Tilly, the Astoria-Megler bridge, the end of the Oregon Trail and the Coast Guard training on what has been called the deadliest passage in the world.

As someone who has been over the Columbia River Bar a few times I hold a deep respect for the Bar. I have been over the Bar in some rough seas. I also have had to wait for the Columbia River Bar to be opened by the United States Coast Guard. You do not cross The Bar without a Bar Pilot you do not proceed up the Columbia River without a River Pilot.
I've been there twice, luckily we got good sea condition there 😊

Awesome video 👍👍👍👍 I live in Portland, Or and pass by the Kalama elevators all the time on the highway and have transited the Columbia River between Portland and Astoria many times on the Columbia River. I also years ago worked on a marine water taxi service ferrying river pilots to and from ships in the Vancouver anchorage 👍

I used to live up the road in Aberdeen Washington. They had an old map in the museum from the 1930s where they roughly think many ships had sunk around the bay and down to long beach.

Another GREAT video, thanks Chief!!!! The Columbia river bar is notorious for being pretty nasty to get through, especially in late fall and winter. Another bar crossing, not as well known is one at the mouth of the Copper river, in Alaska, the Copper river bar. Of course there is little if any large vessel traffic, mostly fishing vessels and the like. My experiences navigating that bar were in the beginning terrifying but I learned to hit the bar entrance mid slack tide, entering and exiting, this worked for me. This was in the day when as a young man I was skipper of a fast pursuit patrol vessel, MV Barracuda. Thanks again Chief!!!!

I have crossed the Columbia Bar several times in small craft, the last time, I came from Puget Sound in my 30' Pilot House Cutter. I hit the CR Buoy at midnight, just as a storm rolled in and the tide went to ebb. It took 6 hours to make it to buoy 10 and Cape Disappointment had a motor lifeboat waiting for me there, just in case. I live on my 30' sloop in St. Helens and grew up commercial fishing off Puget Island, my family has been commercial fishing the Columbia for over 110 years and Alaska since at least the 30's. We have fed the world high protein salmon during two World Wars and the Great Depression, at this point there are less than 200 active commercial permits, and it is a dying way of life.
