Biography
Mr. Doctor is a rapper from Sacramento, CA. He grew up in the Lincoln Village neighborhood in Rancho Cordova, a suburb of Sacramento. As a witness to gang violence at an early age, Mr. Doctor quickly became enamored with the local gang Northgate Crips. By age 14, he had spent several months in juvenile lockup for crimes ranging from grand theft auto to robbery. The next few years of his life had him living between his grandparents' house in Lincoln Village, his mother's house in South Sacramento, and juvenile hall.
Eventually Mr. Doctor was invited to Enharmonic, a studio in Sacramento, to observe a recording session. There, he met producer and rapper Brotha Lynch Hung, who convinced him to try rapping. The two put together the track "Leavin' 'Em Wit No Clue" for Black Market Records and soon Mr. Doctor was signed to the label. The success of Lynch's debut album Season of da Siccness spurred the creation of Setripn' Bloccstyle, Mr. Doctor first full-length on Black Market.
In 1999, he would follow up his landmark debut with Bombay, which climbed to #79 on the Billboard music charts. In spite of his success, however, Black Market as a label was on shaky ground; labelmate X-Raided was in prison on first-degree murder charges, mentor Lynch was in a heated legal battle with label head Cedric Singleton over unpaid money, and the rest of the label's fledgling artists were looking to become popular in their own right.
After rushing the production of 2001's Doc Holiday to meet contractual obligations, Mr. Doctor bought out his contract and went out on his own, eventually putting together the compilation Odysea to promote other artists. Longtime friend and advisor Lorenzo Green-Eyes worked with Mr. Doctor, who signed to Epidemic Entertainment to produce the 2004 double-album Documentary, which was met with little critical fanfare, despite features from star rappers E-40, Lil' Keke and Lil' Flip.
Mr. Doctor released his swan song Bloccstyle 2 in 2007, named as an ode to the album that brought him his first success.
