Gretsch Electromatic Jet G5230T (FilterTrons) vs. G5210T-P90 (no talking)

  • This is a demo/comparison of two new Gretsch Electromatic Jet models; the G5230T 140th Anniversary Limited Edition (in Stone/Pearl Platinum finish) with Filter'Tron pickups and the G5210T Two 90 (in Petrol finish) with P90 pickups.
    I play (almost..) the same thing on both guitars, going into the Fractal Audio FM9 with the exact same settings on three presets; clean, medium gain and high gain, also using all three different pickup settings on every preset.

    I Like the Blacktop Filter'Trons they sound somewhere between a fender and a P-90. with no hum. Perfect pickups for cutting through the rest of the band. a Guitar that sounds right is what Gretsch is to me. I love both Guitars sound I am pulled toward the 140th Anniversary more.

    Excellent playing, sir.
    I have noticed there you have what appears to be some sort of a shim in the bridge pickup cavity of the G5230T-140. I have held two different of those guitars in my hands, and both of those had weirdly loose bridge pickup that almost rattled in the pickup cavity with a movement - was that the case for you, too?

    • @rednebb
      @rednebb  Před rokem +1

      Thank you, and yes.. I've actually returned the guitar now, not because of that, and not because I didn't like it, but because I found a couple other Gretsches I wanted more..😉

    • @anavnaj
      @anavnaj Před rokem

      @@rednebb Oh wow, that makes three different guitars of this model that I know of having this issue. It seems like they really dropped the ball on at least one batch of these, which is really sad with an "anniversary edition"... It's almost like they used bridge PUs (and PU rings) meant for the hollow body, where they sit a lot higher and therefore need shorter springs around the height adjustment screws...

    • @rednebb
      @rednebb  Před rokem

      @@anavnaj Yeah, it seems they did a bummer here.. Apart from that though, the guitar was very nice and gorgeous (like most Gretsches)..😊

    Hi Ketil greetings from Australia!! Absolutely love your channel!! Please keep making content !!! have a quick question I am thinking of buying the 140th anniversary Jet from your personal experience is this a good value guitar ? Does it compare well with the other electromatic jets , are you happy with it?

    • @rednebb
      @rednebb  Před rokem

      Hi, and thank you very much! Yes, it is a good guitar, like most other Gretsches I own and have owned, and it looks amazing! But I ended up returning this one actually, because I found some other guitars I wanted more (this happens all the time..) 😉 It had a little issue though; (especially one of) the pickups seemed loose, like the screws weren't properly in place. So I had to put a little washer inbetween the pickup and the pickup ring to keep it from moving around and rattling..

    • @smallcogmusic
      @smallcogmusic Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@rednebbI have exactly the same issue with mine! It’s a great guitar but I didn’t like the 50s style wiring which caused earth hums at high gain so I had it changed to modern wiring. The loose pickup is annoying so I’ll need to do the same. I have an 2015 5420 and I wanted a solid body with the same control layout but I find these pickups are harsher than that so not completely happy with it yet but it looks great!

    Hi Ketil, great playing as always. I fell in love with P90 model (Vintage White) and I'll be buying it most likely next week.
    I have a couple of questions about the P90 model though, if you don't mind consulting me:
    - Since it's kind of difficult to tell through videos and pictures, how's the fretboard color and its overall look? Laurel fretboards usually tend to look real pale and dry, which gives the vibe of a cheap guitar and I really don't like it. Have you treated yours with lemon oil or anything else? God, I whish this model had a rosewood fretboard like some other Electromatics..
    - How are the frets edges? Were they smooth and well rounded out of the box?
    - How's the factory action and overall setup? Did you have to mess around with truss rod / bridge height at all?
    - How's the tuning stability? Is the nut cut properly and are machine heads okay?
    Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions!
    Thanks in advance!

    • @rednebb
      @rednebb  Před rokem +4

      Thank you :-) I will try to answer your questions as good as I can.. The fretboard color is brighter than a regular rosewood or ebony fretboard, of course, but it's not an issue for me. I haven't treated it with anything, I normally don't feel the need to do that with any of my guitars anyway. Right out of the box there were some sharp fret edges, but after the wood had settled for a couple of days, it doesn't bother me anymore. The factory setup was very good. Like with most Bigsby-equipped guitars, tuning stability can be an issue, but I will make some adjustments to improve on that eventually. I have no issues with the nut, and the machine heads are ok.. ;-)
