7 years after my first video, I decided to respond to my own video response after receiving a copy of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Redaction; a game that claims to fix the problems of the original. Does Redaction live up to its name and do I successfully reply to...my reply? The world may never know. HUGE thanks are due to Jonathan for giving me this game and to my parents and girlfriend that helped me a great deal with acquiring props and shooting/acting in several scenes in this video. Thank you very much to all of the viewers who have supported me over the last 7+ years! My videos would be nothing without you! Thank you! Love, Eric

Man, I remember watching your original Simon's Quest video back when I was 9-10. I'm 16 right now, in my final year of high school, and your videos are still as entertaining as I remember them. Keep up the great work, goemon!

During a CZcams deep dive, me and my friend found your original response video last night and loved it. Big hit of nostalgia in more ways than one! Anyway, now that it has been 8 years since your response to your response, you should make a third response to your response to your response. I mean, it just makes sense (probably).

Good call! Yeah, the clue is technically there but the way I read the clue as a kid was to "wait for a soul (a person) with a red crystal", so I though that someone with a red crystal would show up if I just stood around at Deborah Cliff. After consulting Nintendo Power, I was able to figure it out but it took a lot of messing around to figure it out for me!

Ah good good. It does make you wonder if Nintendo also allowed them to be as mind numbingly cryptic as possible to make some extra munnies on their Nintendo Counselor helplines!
I remember ringing up Acclaim's help line as I was stuck on Krusty's Super Fun House on the SNES, only for the counselor to ring me back as I had actually gotten much farther than he had in the game! :D

***** Well in Japan they didn't have tip lines I don't think. They did have magazines and guides, but I think Konami were trying to dig into Zelda's "communication" aspect. People forget Zelda was just as cryptic, except in the west it came with a map and detailed instructions on how to get started.

There's even more rom hacks for this game that let's you double your hearts (Let's progression go by a lot faster, not too much grinding), makes the false blocks noticeable (Now they aren't there anymore), and an even better re-translation that comes with a map, super fast day and night cycles, and a beginning prologue as well as a save function. Pretty awesome.

To anyone who didn't have time to check the endings, this is what theAlmightyGuru went with.
      _________________________
Bad Ending: The Nefarious Dracula has been vanquished, but Simon Belmont was not able to survive the terrible wounds he received from the struggle. Simon will always be remembered for his bravery and courage.
Good Ending: Injured, but victorious, Simon Belmont kneels over Dracula's foul corpse. Peace may now return to the people of Transylvania. In time, the Vampire's curse will be forgotten, but not the name Belmont.
Best Ending: With Dracula defeated, and the people of Transylvania safe again, Simon Belmont joins the ranks of his family's heroic lineage as a veteran vampire hunter. Forever shall you be remembered.
      _________________________
Honestly, these endings are good, and I kinda wish those texts were an optional patch for other Castlevania 2 style hacks that fixes the problems with the game. I say this, because despite Bisqwit making huge aesthetic changes involving a cinematic prologue, an in-game map, stylistic text, and pallette fading for day-night transitioning, refuses to follow through with theAlmightyGuru's change in proper endings, and stuck with the original ending text. What Bisqwit never understands is that the text never explains what happens to Simon, only Ending 2's original text tells us that. In Guru's redone text, Simon's health was a top priority. NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO TRANSYLVANIA, BECAUSE IT WOULD STILL BE A SHITHOLE 100 YEARS LATER!!!

Redaction is nice and all but there is a 16-bit version that puts bosses in all the dungeons and updated music in the game. Some of the sprites are from Rondo of Blood and the team who did it is called MetriodQuest. And Dracula really looks like Dracula in the end. Although I can't remember if the dialogue was fixed or not. That's the version you should review and if you D/L it it get the version that has the Richter sprite. So fun to see what bosses they added.

I played Castlevania II when it first came out. I rented it and was able to beat it twice without a guide. The hints were cryptic and the day night cycle took way too long, but I still enjoyed the game. The first time I beat it I got the black and white ending. Then I got the middle ending the second time. I didn't get the good ended until many years later when I played again and only on the third attempt.

Just now learned of the redaction and I remembered your old video and AVGN's review too. I was actually wondering if you'd care enough at this point to make another video. Funny how some things don't change. Well except we've got our own places now and we have a better selection now of things 'cuz they're fixed.
I'm honestly considering having my original CV2 converted. See, in truth I got this game as an adult, so I actually don't believe I'd miss the old version.
I actually kind of considered doing an overhaul hack myself, but am not sure to what extent this might be appreciated for fellow fans, or not. Also, what's already there may not quite be enough for what I wanted to do with CV2.
While I have been reading the yamaha 6502 ASM book (in english that's the programming language necessary for ROMhacking extensively) there's tons of options for other games so I'm not sure if a CV2 is worth it, especially now that this redaction has been done.

There was nothing goofy about the original prologue. I like the way it sounded and always thought it was foreboding. Not everything needs to be as basic and straightforward as possible. That shouldn't be your number one goal in writing. Things can have a little bit of poetry and ambiguity to them.

I remember watching the AVGN's review and having the same reaction. I even found issue with the complaints as once you understand, the game is easy to beat. However, I do accept that is 1) my nostalgia and 2) I know it.
I remember playing it and not understanding it the first few times. The puzzles felt over my head and for me the answers came from "How to Win at Nintendo Games" and not Nintendo Power. Buddy had a subscription though missed the first year or so... However, Yeah!!! played Dragon Warrior. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
Simon's Quest was my first Castlevania game. I didn't get a chance to play the first for some years later (like 20). I enjoyed it from the beginning because I didn't play anything else like it. Maybe 2 years later, the original Metroid and Zelda 2 was my first Legend of Zelda game and I hated it more than Simon's Quest.
Zelda 2 seemed even more cryptic to me. About 20 years later and walkthroughs to figure out Zelda 2.
Oh well, I'm rambling. Nice review and nostalgic trip watching this and your original video.
