I’ve watched a bunch of panel lining videos, but no one specifically talks about the gloss top coat (type/brand/mix…), which is where my process fails. I truly liked your comparison of top coats look, feel and effects, so each one of us could pick the one that better suits each individual modeling style and kit type. Very, very interesting the anodized look using the matt coat! I want to try it! Having started as traditional plastic modeler (tanks, airplanes, etc.) I’ve a fondness for matt coats vs. gloss even on my gunpla, as I like the “military” look the matt finishing gives, but that’s my personal preference. I look forward to your next series of videos and I echo other comments on showing actual kits building, painting, weathering (a weathering video series could be a good one….) would be nice. I also heard about you starting dioramas. It’s so fun, I started too not long ago and it’s a great fun and experimenting area!

That anodized red is so nice looking! Dig it so much. I started airbrushing my gundam kits a few months back. Been full painting my RG Hi Nu since November. Been super fun but stressful at times. Still learning so much even now. I frosted one my other kits by mistake when laying down some X-86, now I'm all paranoid to spray a top coat on another one. Let alone my fully painted RG Hi Nu. Any major tips? PSI I was going for is 15, switching my needed from 0.3 to my 0.5, going to take it slow. Layer one flat coat, let it dry do another maybe.

I wish there was a video like this but about how it feels to the touch, I wanna paint my controller/keyboard but the spray paint and top coat i used felt awful to the touch. I was thinking of giving it a try with an airbrush but I think I should just give-up and forget it lol

@@PlamoTherapist Hmm the one i used felt weird to the touch specially if my hands sweat, clear coats sound like they'd get slippery!The giving up is financially as I only want to buy an airbrush for full-color painting and I don't do art, the most complicated thing i've done is an ombre and I rarely use them! but now you tempt me lol. My other issue is fears of the pump being too loud for a shared apartment with roomates. and they're so big!
Oops. I thought this comment was on another video. This red is what I call an anodized red. Basically it's a candy red with a matte topcoat. The layering is as follows, Alclad gloss black base, Alclad Chrome, Alclad candy red/ clear red, and finally Gaia flat clear. It's pretty involved, but as you can see, the results are cool! If you want a warmer look, you can do a gold instead of a chrome and the red will look at bit "warmer" Best of luck to you! 😁
Would the same techniques and logic apply to coats in intermediate steps (i.e. a gloss coat after paint for decals, to ultimately get covered by a semigloss)? I worry a bit about having too many layers and the thickness of the ultimate result.
Hey there! Great question! While a lot of these paints are referred to as topcoats, they really are just clear paints and can be used at any intermediary step. Paint build-up can be an issue, so deciding when to use them can come with a. Bit of planning. Generally, I use paints with a glossy finish so I don't need a gloss topcoat before decals and panel lines. However some brands may need it to allow the decals and panel liner to glide on the smooth surface. As for having dual finishes on a kit. It's up to you if you want to mask or just separate out pieces to apply the desired topcoat, but as long as you aren't doing triple layers on all your paint, there shouldn't be too much of an issue. Hey Markus, so the colors I used were Alclad Gloss Black Base. Alclad Chrome, Alclad Transparent Red, and finally Gaia Matte. I'm pretty sure you can find Alclad at almost all Gundam Distributors. Hope I understood your question correctly. Best of luck! 😁

Hey there! Great question. To be honest I really don't know for sure. 🙇 Based on pictures I've seen online, it looks like you can achieve a similar look with a pearlescent paint over white and sealed in with a gloss top-coat. You might need to play around with different pearlescent effects to get the right look, but I think it'll look great regardless. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes! 😁
Hey, great question! There's not a "one best answer," but if you can tell me the the type of paint and the nozzle size, I can give a thinning and PSI recommendation to test and play around with. For this video, I have a 0.35mm nozzle, Gaia lacquer paint thinned to a 1:1.5 paint to thinner ratio at about 22 PSI. I recommend making your gloss top coat a bit thinner like 1:2 to allow better flow and to help it level out a bit before it starts to dry giving you a nicer finish with less paint. Sorry it's so long and roundabout, but I hope this helps steer you in the right direction.
@@PlamoTherapist I bought Createx's satin acrylic clear coat. The bottle says to thin ~10% per volume with their 4012 reducer, and to spray at 24-27 psi, but nothing about nozzle size. Maybe I just need to go for it and see what works. I'm still really new to this airbrushing stuff. Edited to add: I have access to a .2mm, .25mm, .35mm. and .4mm nozzle, I believe
Hey, that's great information. Start with the recommendations on the bottle and I'd say go with the 0.35mm nozzle and see what happens. The goal for a satin coat (satin is roughly a semi-gloss) is an even coverage when applied, so medium wet coats like a gloss would be what I would try. Best of luck. And let me know how it turns out. I top coated for the first time a few days ago (hg aerial) and I used flat top coat. I tried to use masking tape to cover the transparent / glossy parts but it was quite a hassle. I thought about painting, panel lining and top coating all the parts individually before building the gunpla so you don't have to use masking tape but I'm not sure if that's a good idea... Cutting the masking tape perfectly is not easy and it sometimes pulls off the stickers. Do you have any tips?
How would you recommend going about top coating a kit that has a mix of metallics and non metallics? I want to topcoat my zeta ver.ka after I finish getting the decals on, I want the kit to be mostly matte but I hand painted some metallic parts and I want those to have a gloss coat
Hey there! Great question! Your best option is going to be to mask off your pieces for the topcoat. One timesaver some builders use is to gloss the whole kit for panel lines and decals Then you only have to mask off the metallics and flat the rest. The other option is to topcoat pieces individually before reassembly. Both have their pros and cons, so choose which one works best and give it a shot! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Can you premix lacquer top coats for future use like you do with paint? I heard with acrylic it lowers the shelf life by a lot but I’m so tired of having to thin my matte every time. I usually use Gaia matte clear and gloss Also if so, would it be the same 1:1.5 ratio?
Hey, great question! It's safe to premix lacquers for easier application later. I have a bottle of gloss clear that I've been slowly using for over a year without issues and the same goes for a flat which is also about a year old now. As for thinning ratios, I recommend 1:1.5 paint to regular thinner for the matte, BUT for the gloss, I recommend 1:2 paint to LEVELING THINNER. Hope this helps and wish you the best of luck. Hey there! Great question! It's what's called an anodized finish. All you need to do to achieve this look is to simply spray a flat or matte coat over your candy colors. That's it!

Hi, I just finished building my MGEX Strike Freedom. I have a few questions I need help about. 1st, Can I top coat the clear parts from the said kit? 2nd, is it safe to top coat gold coated parts? your help would be appreciated.
Hey Man, Mad jelly about the kit. 😆 With that said though, you can clear coat clear pieces, but just know that if you use a matte coat, it won't be as clear. As for the Gold pieces, I'm sure it'll be fine to topcoat, but if you want to be 100% sure, topcoat some of the left-over runners and see if there's any issues. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Hey plamo T, at 3:37 what is your psi and what brand is the gloss coat? I'm using iwata eclipse hp cs (I think you are using the same airbrush lol) however I just started using mr gx 100 super clear gloss 1 to 1 mixed woth mr leveling thinner and I still can't get an awesome gloss finish like the one I see here. I was thinking Maybe the over spray might be a contributing factor but hard to say when I'm dropping down to 10 psi. Or is it the mix? Maybe the brand? And the end goal is not for the glossy finish, it's just to protect the paint so I can mask and panel line, then after flat coat because it my personal preference. But anyways I've been trouble shooting this for awhile and I'm over wasting clear coat lol. Any help would be much appreciated
Hey Curt! Thank you for watching and commenting! My gloss is Gaia Ex Clear thinned 1:2 with Mr. Leveling Thinner. I'm actually now spraying at 18 PSI as opposed to the 20 PSI before. It's not a big change, but significant to note. I think it's more your ratio than anything else. And yes, give this mix a shot and see if that helps with your protection layer. 😁 Thank you again and best of luck!

Anytime man! And if your masks are pulling up paint, but not primer, then you just gotta let it cure a bit longer (I recommend at least 6 hours). If the masks are also pulling up the primer and you're back down to bare plastic. Give your kits a sanding with 600 grit before laying primer down going forward. You can always strip with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to start over and sand, but if it's minor then just keep that as a tip for the next one. Let me know how it goes and wish you the best of luck! Hey Ernesto! If you're panel lining and adding decals directly to plastic. You can top-coat after. If you are painting your kit, best practice is a gloss coat before both, and your final coat after. Hope this answers your question and best of luck! 😁
@@PlamoTherapist im painting my kit but i want a matt coat on it. People have told me to clear coat(if im doing matt) before i add decals because the setter and softener can damage the paint. So my question is what type of clear coat do I buy? What I am thinking is that clear coat and top coat is the same thing. But what people are essentially telling me is to buy a glossy top coat, so that the paint isn't damaged adding decals and for easier application. And after decals I can just use the matt coat to finish it off.

Thank you so much for watching and asking questions! 😁 You are correct in thinking that clear coat and top-coat are the same thing, and people recommend it because the gloss coat helps the decal to float around more freely. I personally haven't had any issues with setter/softer affecting my paint, and I think that as long as it's cured properly, you shouldn't have an issue either. But if you want to be absolutely sure, test your paint on a spoon and add your setter/softer and see what happens. Because I personally haven't had any issues with setter/softer affecting my paint, in all honesty I skip this step. 🤫🤣 And you are free to do so if you want. However, if you want to do it properly, there's nothing wrong with a gloss coat to help your decals float better before finishing it with a matte coat. Hey Justin! I think you should be fine with Tamiya Rattle cans. I believe those are lacquers which are pretty durable as far as paints go. You can always test on a spoon to confirm it first. 😁 Good luck!

Depends on the paint beneath it. For this one, I used a Semi-Gloss, but for a metallic black and deep blue that I may use on my Ver Ka, I'd use a gloss. It all depends on the paint used and the desired look at the end. 😁

How would you recommend going about top coating a kit that has a mix of metallics and non metallics? I want to topcoat my zeta ver.ka after I finish getting the decals on, I want the kit to be mostly matte but I hand painted some metallic parts and I want those to have a gloss coat
Hey there! Great question! Your best option is going to be to mask off your pieces for the topcoat. One timesaver some builders use is to gloss the whole kit for panel lines and decals Then you only have to mask off the metallics and flat the rest. The other option is to topcoat pieces individually before reassembly. Both have their pros and cons, so choose which one works best and give it a shot! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Can you premix lacquer top coats for future use like you do with paint? I heard with acrylic it lowers the shelf life by a lot but I’m so tired of having to thin my matte every time. I usually use Gaia matte clear and gloss

Hey, great question! It's safe to premix lacquers for easier application later. I have a bottle of gloss clear that I've been slowly using for over a year without issues and the same goes for a flat which is also about a year old now.
As for thinning ratios, I recommend 1:1.5 paint to regular thinner for the matte, BUT for the gloss, I recommend 1:2 paint to LEVELING THINNER. Hope this helps and wish you the best of luck.

What is the candy color semi opaque to let the chrome finish show through a little bit ??
Hey there! Great question! It's what's called an anodized finish. All you need to do to achieve this look is to simply spray a flat or matte coat over your candy colors. That's it!

Hi, I just finished building my MGEX Strike Freedom. I have a few questions I need help about. 1st, Can I top coat the clear parts from the said kit? 2nd, is it safe to top coat gold coated parts? your help would be appreciated.
Hey Man, Mad jelly about the kit. 😆 With that said though, you can clear coat clear pieces, but just know that if you use a matte coat, it won't be as clear. As for the Gold pieces, I'm sure it'll be fine to topcoat, but if you want to be 100% sure, topcoat some of the left-over runners and see if there's any issues.

Hey plamo T, at 3:37 what is your psi and what brand is the gloss coat? I'm using iwata eclipse hp cs (I think you are using the same airbrush lol) however I just started using mr gx 100 super clear gloss 1 to 1 mixed woth mr leveling thinner and I still can't get an awesome gloss finish like the one I see here. I was thinking Maybe the over spray might be a contributing factor but hard to say when I'm dropping down to 10 psi. Or is it the mix? Maybe the brand? And the end goal is not for the glossy finish, it's just to protect the paint so I can mask and panel line, then after flat coat because it my personal preference. But anyways I've been trouble shooting this for awhile and I'm over wasting clear coat lol. Any help would be much appreciated
Hey Curt! Thank you for watching and commenting! My gloss is Gaia Ex Clear thinned 1:2 with Mr. Leveling Thinner. I'm actually now spraying at 18 PSI as opposed to the 20 PSI before. It's not a big change, but significant to note. I think it's more your ratio than anything else.
And yes, give this mix a shot and see if that helps with your protection layer. 😁

Anytime man! And if your masks are pulling up paint, but not primer, then you just gotta let it cure a bit longer (I recommend at least 6 hours). If the masks are also pulling up the primer and you're back down to bare plastic. Give your kits a sanding with 600 grit before laying primer down going forward. You can always strip with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to start over and sand, but if it's minor then just keep that as a tip for the next one.

Is it safe to apply Mr. Super Clear topcoat on Tamiya acrylic paints? I heard it will melt the paints.
Hey Kyle! Great question! If you let your Tamiya cure properly (at least 24 hours works for me). You'll have no issues. I did this on my Messer build a while back!

When to top coat? After WSD and panel lines? Or before?
Hey Ernesto! If you're panel lining and adding decals directly to plastic. You can top-coat after. If you are painting your kit, best practice is a gloss coat before both, and your final coat after. Hope this answers your question and best of luck! 😁
@@PlamoTherapist im painting my kit but i want a matt coat on it. People have told me to clear coat(if im doing matt) before i add decals because the setter and softener can damage the paint. So my question is what type of clear coat do I buy?
What I am thinking is that clear coat and top coat is the same thing. But what people are essentially telling me is to buy a glossy top coat, so that the paint isn't damaged adding decals and for easier application. And after decals I can just use the matt coat to finish it off.

You are correct in thinking that clear coat and top-coat are the same thing, and people recommend it because the gloss coat helps the decal to float around more freely.
I personally haven't had any issues with setter/softer affecting my paint, and I think that as long as it's cured properly, you shouldn't have an issue either. But if you want to be absolutely sure, test your paint on a spoon and add your setter/softer and see what happens.

However, if you want to do it properly, there's nothing wrong with a gloss coat to help your decals float better before finishing it with a matte coat.

Hey Justin! I think you should be fine with Tamiya Rattle cans. I believe those are lacquers which are pretty durable as far as paints go. You can always test on a spoon to confirm it first. 😁

Depends on the paint beneath it. For this one, I used a Semi-Gloss, but for a metallic black and deep blue that I may use on my Ver Ka, I'd use a gloss.
It all depends on the paint used and the desired look at the end. 😁
