After our family prayed together the Angelus and the Holy Rosary, my younger brother and sister and I did our school assignments while my mother prepared her lesson plan. All through this time, my father had already finished doing his lesson plan, sat on the bamboo lounging chair playing this musical piece with a borrowed mandolin from the husband of my mother's first cousin, who years ago went to America on a "sakada". Both my father and mother were elementary school teachers. My father played this musical piece and the "Hating Gabi" (Midnight) by our local composer, Antonio Molina (performed by Redentor Romero was closest to the mandolin rendition of my father's). All through those years, I did not know the titles of these musical pieces. Eventually I graduated college and practiced my profession bringing me to another country. Part of my heart has been left in my hometown where I was born and when I think about it, it always zeroes in on those evenings when I did my assignments under the light of the Petromax (there was no electricity yet) that illuminated our little house with Tatay's music that went past beyond the walls of our nipa home. I only knew the title of this music just now. It brings me to tears as I remember my kind and loving father. He died 20 years ago this year 18 years ahead my mother. The music did not only ring through my memory but went past beyond into the chambers of my heart. This interpretation by Stepan was closest to my father's mandolin interpretation. Thank you for posting this.
