Hin Wong Beach was best for snorkeling.
Aow Leuk and Freedom Beach were also decent for snorkeling. Swim to the rocks and cliffs on the sides of the bay, that's where you will find most marine life.
If you are looking to get social go to Sairee Beach. That's where most restaurant's and Bar's are at plus lots of people playing football, volleyball etc.
Hin Wong has 2 really nice bars and there's not that many people usually.
Be careful when going alone with the scooter! Avoid the unpaved, steep sandy roads going to some beaches. Park it on the street and walk the last 500 meters. If you scratch the bike many rental shops on the island will try to extort you for overpriced repair costs because they have your passport.
